I remember a time where the amount of goals scored was no as much of a factor when determining the GOAT. It was how much a player on the field influenced the game and how he did it. In the 80’s it was Diego, then Zidane neither of which scored the most goals. Crueff, Beckenbauer, Matthäus. Scoring the most goals means you are the best or most prolific goal scorer not the best player. People these days are obsessed with basic stats and often can’t look beyond goals and assists. Besides, anybody that thinks Messi or Christiano if they had lived and trained in the 80’a would have went season after season doing what they did scoring as many goals as that did is dreaming.
Cr7 is the prototype of the modern athletes. Very complete, he trained every possible skill. R9 is someone who was having fun. Both had talent but R9 was special.
Lol cr7 wins career and longevity, one is half team work and the other is just how long he stayed in shape, neither is that strong a basis to gauge how good hes been, r9 obvioisly wins
I went back and watched most of the games from R9 and his best career highlights, and to me CR7 is still the better player. I saw R9 dribbling past players and scoring goals, but so did CR7 in his peak. Meanwhile I identified several things R9 wasn't doing that CR7 was able to (high-jumping headers, bicycle kicks, rocket free kicks, long shots, weak foot goals). R9 did score a couple of free kicks and long shot goals but nothing compared to the amount CR7 scored. I think people just really want to discredit CR7 because not everyone likes his personality.

You have it the other way round. Madrid galacticos 2.0 was pretty much built for CR7(why would a striker like Benzema play a supporting role for CR7? ) whereas galacticos 1.0 was a complete mess with absolutely no player cohesion with each galactico doing their own thing. Also, R9’s Brazil in 2002 looks good on paper but that was far from the truth - Ronaldinho was still an up and coming footballer. Kaka barely played 10 minutes in the whole tournament. 2002 Brazil barely even qualified for the World Cup without R9. R9 didn’t play in the qualifiers owing to injuries. They were not at all the favorites going into the tournament but R9 proved to be the difference maker scoring 8 goals and winning the golden ball. Did you know that R9 barely played some 40 games(club + international) between the 1998 and 2002 world cups? He still came back and won the ballon d’or in 2002. I do agree that CR7 would probably rank higher in the GOAT conversations owing to his achievements. But you can’t use that to dismiss R9. The guy was like a beefy two footed Messi in his prime. Mourinho who’d coached CR7 in his prime at Madrid, says R9 was something else and even calls him the best Ronaldo ever. While that is kinda pushing it, it just goes to show how immense his talent and impact was in the 90s. All the great defenders of the era - Maldini, Cannavaro, Nesta, Staam, Cafu etc.(who’ve played against both R9 and CR7) rate R9 higher than CR7. Hell some even rate him higher than Messi.
Some even say that R9 single handedly carried Brazil to the 1998 WC final where they lost to France after he suffered a mysterious fit and lost consciousness right on the day of the final.
2006 Brazil was actually the strongest version - Ronaldinho, kaka and Adriano all in their prime along with R9 who was well past his. That team didn’t even make it to the semifinals.
