high density! what happens when it need repairing ? these apartment blocks cost a fortune to build and maintain where as a Victorian or Georgian terrace around a garden square cost little. i don't by this high density authoritarianism way of building, but i do like the sponge city concept though

I spent years developing power law calculus and Hierarchical Script Database so we can save our hides with another paradigm shift. When I saw those in charge of working capital distribution evangelize greed, I rage quit. But that's not the root. The root is absurd egotism. I continue to pray for humanity's better angels.

The sad thing is that this has been known and talked about to with and by the US government seriously since the 90s, even here on KZread you can view Congressional hearings on this issue where top scientists explained what would happen. It's been getting greater attention in the last 5 years but it was being talked about.

7:36 Owner vs renter mentality. "My primary preoccupation was to give every citizen a stake in the country and its future." Importance of equity: "They own it - an asset that will increase in value as the city grows. A homeowner keeps the public space clean. The person who rents doesn't care, he just looks after the inside." "The value goes up if the place looks clean and beautiful on the outside and inside." 11:42 Everyone was expected to do their part, to respect the thinking behind the plan, and to adhere to it. "It's a definite plan and we stuck to the plan. There's no corruption and nobody can deviate from those plans." 12:02 A whole of government approach, combined with strong planning ability and effective implementation of plans, marks out SG's competition advantage in urban development. 22:20 First world oasis = First world conditions: "We just have to keep up with the highest benchmark that exists at any one time. Then you are in the game." 22:45 Having a clean and green city is the declared objective of the government. This was not just window dressing - *"Equal and public access to greenery, clean air and water, is nothing less than a matter of social equity - a critical condition for ensuring the morale of the people, and a source of unity and national pride for the nascent nation."* 23:20 "If we did not create a society which is clean throughout the island, we'd have two classes of people: upper class, upper middle, and even middle with gracious surroundings - and lower middle and working class in poor conditions. No society like that will thrive; no family would want its young men to die for all the people with the big homes and those owning tall towers." 24:10 Building up a sense of nationhood and unity was of paramount concern when SG separated from Malaysia. "Apart from finance and defense, it's a sense of equal-ness in the society. You can't have this sense without giving all Singaporeans a clean and green Singapore, with everyone owning a property. You don't live equally, but you're not excluded from the public spaces for everybody. It was a fundamental principle on which I crafted all policies, and it worked." 25:00 Having a good environment and a well kept city had economic benefits as well. Served as proof to investors. *If a garden is well maintained and neatly landscaped, there must be a dedicated and efficient gardener.* 32:25 Grit, determination, and political will. "I'm very determined. If I decide that something is worth doing, then I'll put my heart and soul into it. The whole ground can be against me, but if I know it's right, then I'll do it. *That's the business of the leader.*

‘Dominos Tuesday’ is a great little novel I got on Amazon about a group of senior citizens on their last legs who throw caution to the wind and take a dangerous sea voyage on a small craft in the name of “going down swinging.” It’s one of those books that I know I’ll reread one day. (Elderly - tough elderly - dying with your boots on.

Thank you so much for the discussion. I have two questions to ask. 1.if this concept is applied in another country, what factors should we look at first? 2. What are the practices in the concept that can be done at low cost and have a big impact in a developing country?

Signs a city is a Sh'th#le 1. High # of crimes 2. High cost of living---unless it's a city only for the rich 3. High # of homeless 4. Many businesses leaving or closing 5. City leaders don't care only what they could put in their pocket 6. Dirty, rundown, smelly, ...etc

It's technically limited by space. i.e., increase height = more blockage = more space required between towers, which kinda defeats the purpose. Also, unless I'm extremely lucky, it seems like every time I see packets of sky greens vegetables being sold, they tend to show symptoms of light deficiency... which again defeats the purpose. And, presumably because they haven't come up with a method to control pests, they only grow baby greens, harvesting them before the stage where the pests will appear. Smart, but again, defeating the purpose in some sense. Love the low power and very cool water system, but there seems to be many compromises here.
