A fabulous Jaguar XJ-S V12, ex-work horse XJ40, the commuter X356 that never really was, a supercharged Jaguar S-Type R, a CLK convertible that needs better summer weather and roads, and some self-professed petrol head who thinks he can drive and film with all his cars - what could possibly go wrong ? Follow along if you love watching classic Jaguars (and the occasional Mercedes) made in the 1980's, 1990's, and the 2000's.

I hope you enjoy/enjoyed your trip. Just one wee point, you said you hoped where you were going would be " civilised". Just a little bit off I thought.
Thank you. We've not been yet. Ah - no perhaps that comment has been taken a bit out of context. I was refering to the ferry journey "..it should be quite civilised..." That was not meant in a derogatory way. Far from it, I'm looking forward to that part of the journey as I have never been on a overnight ferry service before. From the reviews I've seen, I heard that the food is really good and the cabins well appointed.
Oof, you never say "the Shetlands", we hate it. It's just Shetland, or Hjaltland. :)
@@Trollberg60north Oh oops! Noted and thank you! I'll be sure to do that for the main video. Won't want to spark a diplomatic incident 🙂.
Looking forward to seeing some XJ40 action!
Our friend cuts his own hair. As do I. As do I.
Why do you call it Japanese????
@@richardsmith9509 It is a Japanese market S-Type R that was imported back into the UK late last year. The instrument cluster and radio was converted to UK spec including UK Sat Nav dvd. As it's 2002.5 car I've needed to use the Jaguar SDD/IDS software to enable some options that were disabled. I've also discovered that it does not have the full alarm system that UK/Europe spec cars have as standard. Otherwise, all good.
Have always wondered what these JEC events would be like, thanks for sharing :)
@@RobinsBookClub I've found them to be well organised. They always restrict the number of vehicles out on track at any one time so it does not get congested or too busy. The downside is that there can be lots of queuing at times as a lot of venues demand minimum vehicle numbers - ditto for the organisers who are mindful of costs. Difficult tightrope to walk in order to try and please everyone. Final point is that most attendees tend to run modern XKs and F-Types: previously the organisers have tried to group cars together based on era and performance but this is difficult for larger events especially with the XK/F-Type biased. I would still recommend these events though. Blyton Park is a good intro track event.
@toooldclassics thanks for the reply, great info :)
I have a pre-owned W211 E280 CDI that I've loved and pampered since the day I got it. Not as many memories as you but I've practically learned all I have know about cars though working on it and fixing it up. I may be moving countries after getting married and am devastated to be leaving without her. I've told my parents to use the car while I'm away and I'm sure they'll take care of her. Selling it is an option I just can't consider. I feel for you.
Excellent video, nice colour car - I have an '87 XJ12 S3 in a similar colour. Where did you buy the coolant hoses? The S3 has the same hoses as the XJS, radiator too. I see a hose kit on eBay but not in the UK...
@@Cosworthcrazy I used classicsiliconehoses.uk/our-products/ based in Tamworth. Hope this helps.
are these 4 l engines much more powerful than s3 xj6 4.2l, i ask as tried an s3 and was left totally underwhelmed power wise,
@@mikewatson5570 I believe that the XK 4.2 engine found in the XJ series 3 makes around 170bhp. AJ6 4.0 makes around 220bhp whilst the the AJ16 (found in X300) around 240bhp. The series 3 XJ would have 3 speed auto transmission whereas XJ40 had 4 speed auto. That helps with performance.
Thanks.
great job, and some helpful hints
Thank you 🙂
Have you tried sng barrett for your hoses or david manners.
Thanks for the suggestion. Last time I checked they did not have complete kits for later XJ40 AJ6 model. Hopefully I will have something arriving soon from the US.
Tidy work
It's OK. Arguably better than exposed black plastic 🙂
Perfect result. Especially on the trim finisher. Surprised as it's rubber and was expecting it to accept a layer of paint..
There may be a part 8 (b) as the drip molding was not quite flush with the window waist line trim. I think I have found out why.
2:27 2:30 great car had one for 4 year's
Looks superb. Gotta admit, mechanical talk is often lost on me but I can certainly appreciate the beauty of this model. I'll search your other videos in the hope of exterior shots.
You mustt have been extremely pleased when you saw the condition of the underside of your car. Just recently considered having this type of service carried out. How much can one expect to pay for the level of service your car received? It did seem to be a top tier service.
Yes - very pleased. Depends on the car. I got a discount as a member of the XJS Club. Full price would have been around £350 Inc VAT. Hope this helps. Rob is a really helpful guy. There is a waiting room with car magazines and unlimited refreshments although I spent most of my time filming 🙂.
I find that cup holder quite annoying. The passenger one is a little too small for every travel cup I own. I guess for soda cans it's ok. I had to remove my "S TYPE" logo on the SE that way. Surprisingly easy.
I have to admit to only using the passenger cup holder for take-out coffee. I think individual pop-out dashboard cup holders with the securing prongs to cater for variable sizes would have been better.
I've just joined you! After owning a 3.0 SE since 2001, I now also have a 2006. STR. Here's a sub as well. Looking forward to the rest of the content on your channel.
Gutted I couldn't make it. I would've made it an even 20 STRs. Roll on next year.
It was a great event. Friendly crowd of fellow enthusiasts.
great video, your car sounds amazing, I have a 1982 HE, right from the start of the HE line (with <18k on the odometer) and still with the three speed auto. I think I'll do a manual conversion at some point; does the engine keep pulling past 5.5k or does it tail off in standard spec?
Amazing - less than 18k miles on a 1982 car. When the rear silencer boxes under the rear bench were bypassed the V12 was happier pulling all the way around to 6.5k. Those reverse flow silencers really strangle performance in my opinion.
@@toooldclassics on the list to fix then!
Please list modifications in description and where to get them. Especially the torque pipes
Sure - I'll do that shortly 👍
I've listed the all modifications in the description and the web sites where most of the parts can be sourced. Hope this helps.
Best gallon ever!!
My uncles friend had one. Oil worker
That sounds lovely!
My dad had one of these when I was a kid, it was a great drive, provided you were driving it directly to the shop to be worked on. That thing was broken more than I think it ever actually worked. Fun to drive, awful to ride in, and a maintenance nightmare.
Oh yes - absolutely essential to keep on top of maintenance and I'm not sure mine would survive if it was used on a daily basis. Definitely a garage / dry storage queen but when she is driven, she gets driven 🙂
Great to hear a manual transmission on a jag 👍
Sweet.😁
Sounds great,prefer autos tho meself.
Mine used to be a 3 speed auto. The transmission was strong but the ratios limiting in my honest opinion. I think the 4 speed auto found on the later facelift XJ-S is a definite improvement. There is a company that does a six speed auto conversion for the XJ-S. I think they use the 6HP26 ZF transmission. Not cheap - but very impressive!
Lovely sound! Is this with a TT system fitted? 😊
Yes :>) AJ6 TT system with XJR-S style twin tails at the back.
A LOVELY car like many Jaguars are. The S-type is smoth and effortlessly transports you from A to B. Lots of power and delivered when asked for. If you enjoy British style buy one.
Watching it on my mobile phone and I'm turning the phone like a steering wheel and left foot braking!!!😂😂😂😂
I just wish the definition was better. KZread compression seems to degrade the 360 footage. Still, I think it is quite clever how a single camera can record all this.
Doh! Thought you were referring to the Goodwood 360 video - oops...
Ah, i really wanted to do this!
great video 👍
Beautiful car. I've had my STR for over 10 years and with a supercharger swap is running over 500bhp. Jaguar should have fitted a twin screw and LSD from factory in these, but apparently their owners at the time, Ford, prevented them due to cost reasons even though they were tested in development. Fortunately both upgrades are available in the aftermarket.
I do think that S-Type Rs are underrated. Your mods sound ideal 👍.
@@toooldclassics if you are ever interested in swapping the supercharger or the eaton fails let me know, as I make kits. The twin screw runs a lot cooler and I haven't had any burst coolant pipes with it and fun isn't killed by the ecu pulling timing due to heat soak after a few short runs like with the eaton. It also all looks stock in the engine bay.
Out of interest, what’s the cost of that?
@@keithanthony974LSD or the twin screw?
@@user-en7nf4hc5zboth, im intrigued now. Lol

Did the same in the S-Type but in reverse, but utilising the site to mailage ferry. Great trip
We meet a blue S-Type ne on the way around. Followed us for a bit then shot past 🙂. Think it was an R not disimilar to mine.
This car rocks.
Just fixed same issue with my XJ40. Thanks
Good stuff - always satisfying when that happens 🙂
Sadly Jag V12 suck, they drop valve seats!
I don't want to tempt fate but mine hasn't (yet?). 4 track days completed - 1 per year roughly . Decent maintenance over the years I guess. My V12 also survived a high speed hydraulic lock incident many years ago without issue so I would say pretty robust.
Superb owned a BRG V12 for years and the only problem I ever had was hoses blowing one on the way back from Brands Hatch on the M25 not funny! So good to see you have upgraded yours! One went under the air rams only about 3 inches long ( in old money) but still lost a lot of coolant. I only did 2 upgrades one as you have done replaced the front silencer boxes with AJ6 pipes, and the best thing was TWR power steering rack bushes handling was awesome. Oh took her to the 1990 LeMans as well, happy days
great video and a lovely looking car
Thank you 👍
i liked the intro with the contrast of colour
Thanks. I used Davinci Resolve and a layer mixer node to do that.
The drive by footage is great!
Thank you 🙂
Great video! Btw, what type of fog lights are you running? I removed the stock ones on my '90 since they looked like a goofy afterthought but yours look slick. ❤
Thanks - they are integrated into the bumper much like the later x300 cars. I have to admit, I have not noticed if this is the same on earlier cars.
@@toooldclassics Ah, I see. Must have been similar to the facelift xjs. Regardless they look great. The earlier ones most certainly do not.
Nice rear plate
I was wondering if anyone would notice 👍
@@toooldclassics looks good should there be a R badge on the boot as well as the wings? Nice car
Thanks. I see a number with the badge on the rear - but mine doesn't and there is no outline or marking on the paintwork to suggest it is missing. Of course, it could have been carefully removed some time ago. There is a supercharged Saturday event at Gaydon in May so will see if there are any others with no badge at the rear 🙂
Mine had no badges at all English import to New Zealand silver with white indicator lenses on gaurds and no reflectors all chrome is silver body colour , maybe it's an option?
@@jamiesmith8313 Interesting - I hope to be at Supercharged Saturday in a few weeks so will be looking at all the S-Type Rs (if time / family permit) and comparing!
Thank you see you shortly at the show 😊
Sorry I missed you Simon. I only had a Saturday disco pass 😂.
Super helpful, thank you! I don't have this specific issue yet, but it is very helpful for to get an idea of how to diagnose other problems that are occurring for me now, like a blower not working and a fog light not working. Jag XJ40.
Attention sadly soon All Gas cars will be illegal in EU and USA!
