Tying body weight to flex is ridiculous. Upper body strength, leverage (height and stick length), and preference will give you the flex you want. Yes, it will take some trial and error and playing experience. Consider a 230 lbs adult beer league player with average upper body strength (doesn't lift at gym). Is he able to bend a 115 flex stick like he would need to in order to benefit from it? No way. That 230 lbs player likely would need a 70 flex. Kids' sticks have less flex because they are weaker ... not because they are lighter. Please stop spreading the "half your body weight" myth. A fat weak kid needs less flex than a lighter, stronger kid. Not more.

@@RedmondsCorner I get it. Using adult weights just makes it easier to illustrate. But, it doesn't work with kids either as you even show in your video. You take the kid's weight of 100, half it ... come up with 50 flex, then throw that out to choose a 40 flex stick because that what he prefers. I would wager most kids his age and weight prefer a 40 flex to a 50. My point is ... there needs to be a better method presented to parents that is more informative and tailored to the actual player. Sure, "half your weight" will get you a stick in your hands ... but so will just pulling one off the rack ... and you don't really know any more with either method. Edit: to that end, here's a video where a guy gives *good* information tying flex to height and strength ... not weight... kzread.info/dash/bejne/hax2q8mng9zFYaQ.html

Do they make hockey skates with screws to fix supponation? If so, can you recommend a brand/model? My left skate is pulling to the left due to my supponation. Thanks in advance.
@RedmondsCorner10 ай бұрын
Tough one but short answer no, hockey holders are very difficult to slightly move side to side. Unlike figure blades that have slotted holes that can easily shift, hockey holders are basically permanently mounted. If you have a good skate person, they may be able to remove the rivets on one side, shim the holder and angle it out to combat your supination. Unfortunately I can’t say 100% because I can’t see you skate! Hope this helps.

@@RedmondsCorner Ok thanks for the answer. I'm a bit surprised hockey skates are unable to shift the blade left/right. To find center on Edeas you need to actually measure the whole outer diameter of the boot with calipers at it's widest point, and divide that number by half. You don't just eyeball it like in this video. On my 285 and 290 pairs they measured about 108mm, so it would be 54mm for the center, then make a line based on that, I guess ideally with a laser level or something. But you want that center point figured out, as on both my pairs true center was actually 4-5mm towards the outside edge of the seam stitching. I did find this video helpful though, as it got the gears turning and I contacted the last tech who retired who mounted my old blades and found out this info, and also found the info matched a technical bulletin from SkatesUS about mounting roller frames to Edea with the same advice, down to the part where true center can often be 4-5mm outside of the stitching. With foot pain, too, on my newest pair of Edeas where initially I had the mount done by another tech before DIYing it, it is interesting. I don't think I have any pronation or supination issues, but the tech I had mount based on wrong math using the sole of the skate mounted the blades very inward, and I had a lot of pain from that. With the blades being truly centered and mounted towards the outside like my first pair, no pain again. Interestingly on my box of MK Professional blades they said to mount around the second toe as the ideal spot, which I found weird advice. However, I have a Greek foot, so the second toe is longer than the big toe, and I'm guessing puts more force out in jumps/etc compared to most people. So I think mounting at the third toe and also coincidentally more true to center matches the Greek foot well, so it might be something to consider.

The flex doesn't change when you cut down a stick. The leverage you have on it does. Cutting the end off a stick doesn't magically alter the materials in the kick point that determine the sticks flex rating. It's the fulcrum point that changes. So, just alter slightly where you place your lower hand if you want to maintain the same flex, or just play normally because you probably won't notice any difference. "Cutting a stick changes the flex" is just as much a myth as "you choose your flex by taking half your weight."

A fat weak kid needs less flex than a lighter, stronger kid. Not more.
For kids man. 400lbs guy isn’t using a 200 flex. “General rule” for 6U, 8U. Meant for kids learning and maybe their parents have no experience and need some guidance. ☮️
My stick without skates is around my forehead is that too long
Unless you are a defenseman that likes the longer reach and prefers to play the puck well away from your body ... yes.
Can't watch any more videos where people were wearing muzzles 🤷🏻♂️
Agree 100%. 2020 man. 🤷♂️
How did the manufacturer of the blade expect anybody to sharpen them?
So my Edea overture is mounted flush with the heel… leaving about 0.6mm in the front, should I re-mount them? I am able to do pretty much all the basic stuff but don’t want to develop bad muscle memory, what do you think ? Thanks
Can you do a blade mounting demonstration in aura boot??
My left foot has bad supponation. I bought a pair of hockey skates online because the pro shop didn't have my wide size. The plastic blade holder is riveted in. Do they make hockey skates with screws to fix supponation? If so, can you recommend a brand/model? My left skate is pulling to the left due to my supponation. Thanks in advance.
I have inline skates, FR brand, that have the slots you mention in figure skates and I can shift the entire frame far to the outside to fix my supponation. Well, that's a potentially new type of hockey skate. Thanks again.
i never got that too. why is it not possible with hockey skates... its so sad
Thank you so much for this video! Tomorrow I will get my Ice Fly Edea with Coronation Ace only with the adjustable screws (since the rink is far from the tech guy I have to go test them moving the blade myself) 😢 Would I be able to attend a 1hs class with only the adjustable screws? Or should I just cancel them until I get all screws placed in? 😢
im a girl tryna start hockey again n my hockey stick my weight is 120 Ibs I need a hockey stick my height and it’s 5’5 or 5’4 maybe help to choose what’s the best for me?
Your weight is irrelevant. How strong you are is what matters. Your body weight won't help you flex the stick, your upper body strength (arms and shoulders) will. I would recommend an intermediate level stick in the 40 - 50 flex range.
Opposite problem. I’m going to have to ask my skate tech to remount my blades flush at the back, and leave a gap at the front… 😢
what if i’m 110 but i’m 5’8 and can’t get a 55 flex
Most stick manufacturers make a 55 flex. The half your body weight is just a starting point for young kids getting into the game. Obviously if you’re 350 pounds you don’t need a 125 flex.
LMAO eat more and hit the gym
thanks this helped alot i did this a year ago and it kinda work but i have a good hocky stick now and why does he sound mean like he wasnt smileing or nothing
Good job
So I think mounting at the third toe and also coincidentally more true to center matches the Greek foot well, so it might be something to consider.
what size legacy 7 blade would go on an ice fly size 245?
9 1/4
@@RedmondsCornerare you still doing fittings? I might travel from IL to see you. Everyone here is failing me in fitting…
Are black spots on ice blades caused by the sparks from blade sharpening?
Can we get a video on the sparx machine
I’m not using the sparx anymore! I have switched to Pro Sharp
@@RedmondsCorner how did you find the the sparx, when you where using it?
How do you find the sparx
Hi! Im running a small town sporting goods in the basement of our local hardware store. Im appreciating your videos and tips! I want to be the best skate guy i can for these kids. Thank you so much!
I just bought ice flies I’m glad I saw this video because I almost threw out my gel pads lol.
To perm mount, Would you be adding an anchor screw in the heel or can you leave it with the sliders only if there is an anchor in the sole plate?
Need to anchor both the heel and the sole plate.
I’d never spend a dime on a boot that would do that.
These days, every boot does that. Edea, Jackson, Aura…
@@RedmondsCorner only boots I’ve ever had were Harklick Customs. Thinking of getting back into skating… and not competing (60+,) so I don’t think the price snd wait (12 months) is worth Harlicks anymore. What do you think about custom Aura with a Jackson Freestyle blade (i last used MK Phantoms)? Ty for your time.
What are the dimensions of that rink?
50 X 25 I think. 1/4 sheet
Would the foot scanner still work for CCM skates. ?
We have a CCM specific scanner.
Poor kid. Should have had a pair of Harlicks or SP Terri from the get go
When I go to Best Buy I’m in the market for an iPad, not a typewriter. That’s how the market in figure skating is today. The old coaches say SP Terri or Harlick…old technology. The newer bread of skater will be wearing Synergy, Aura, Edea. Simple evolution. Everything evolves over time and boots are finally evolving. SP Teri and Harlick are so far behind the times it’s crazy. 10 years zero skaters are wearing those. Only exception might be ice dance cause weight is less of a factor.
@@RedmondsCorner thanks for the reply. That’s what I get 🤣. last competed in the 1970’s. You had to duck Velociraptors then.
Hey Matt, just discovered your channel. Great stuff. Getting back into skating after 45 years off. QUESTION: Can you recommend a great Skate Tech in Southern California? Thanks!
Hmmmm. I don’t know any out there but will make some calls and let you know.
And thanks for the nice comments!
I cut my stick to my lips not on skates, am I weirdd
No way man. Not at all. This is just for kids learning. Once a player starts getting more experience they develop their own preferences. I know players who cut their stick well below their chins and also players who cut them above their heads.
You are a living legend 💯
I just got a stick that is big on me and I want to cut it but I don’t want the flex to go down what should I do ???
Tough one. Rule is 3 flex per inch. So if you have a 70 and cut it 3 inches it’s now a 79 flex.
just cut it a little it shouldnt hurt the flex but dont do it to mush
The flex doesn't change when you cut down a stick. The leverage you have on it does. Cutting the end off a stick doesn't magically alter the materials in the kick point that determine the sticks flex rating. It's the fulcrum point that changes. So, just alter slightly where you place your lower hand if you want to maintain the same flex, or just play normally because you probably won't notice any difference. "Cutting a stick changes the flex" is just as much a myth as "you choose your flex by taking half your weight."
do ankle sleeves also help with pain on the back side pf the leg? just above the achilles heel. my skates dig in there pretty badly. i literally have a red swollen spot there after 1 hour of skating
The sleeves are designed to be a barrier between the top edge of the boot and the skin. If you pain is on that line they will definitely help
@@RedmondsCorner the problem is that im not sure if it's the edge that hurts me or just below that (so between the edge and the heel cup)
Are mystic heat moldable?
No. I mean you can heat them to get the ankle pads to soften up a bit but overall it’s just a plastic skate
I have seen so many skaters at our rink with bloody feet from the tongue. And I think they look strange
Great video😊 I struggle with over pronation, especially on my left foot, but I find it very hard to mount blades on the Edea boots because they have such a narrow bottom.. I’ve tilted mine slightly to the inside, but now the blade is hanging very much outside of the bottom sole. Is this a common problem or is it something to do with the blade?
I always try to fix the boot from the inside first before moving a blade or even shimming one side. Have you tried any arch supports? Jackson makes a 3, 5, and 7 degree insole that has helped a lot of my skaters with probation.
Thank you! I’ll check out insoles😊
@@RedmondsCorner does the Jackson insoles fit inside of Edea boots?
@@flowerpuffff Yep. We mainly use CCM insoles but we have had some use the Jackson ones.
Hello from Gernany, Do you habe link for me about insoles from Jackson? Best regards
This guy is intense lol
Passionate maybe? 🤣
Great video! Thanks so much for sharing. Why is it bad to have the blade mounted flush with the back of the heel? Or rather what’s the difference vs having it flush with the front? I JUST got new skates for the first time in 20yrs (lol). My old skates are mounted like you said they should be - with the front of the blade meeting the front of the sole on the skate. My new skates are the opposite (the heels are matched boot/blade). so I’m just curious what the difference is and why you suggest they be mounted aligned in the front. Thanks again for ur video! Love all your content 💗
Cool so I need a 150 flex stick. Now who sells those?
Have you done a video on the Sparx sharpener?
