People don't act in those days for adventure, they act for survive. They have to eat,...
Anybody else think the narrator sounds a little like Conan O'Brien?
That is a first...most say Jordan Peterson :D
Some sailors would invest their savings in the VOC and would have a small yearly income to help them live their lives at home.
Yes, it paid on avg 18% annual dividend for most of its existence...not bad :)
Persia was great before becoming a Shia country😂😂
Agreed.
Opium was a very popular drug for sailors a lot of opium dens were opened to exclusively serve them. Most were never in port long enough to develop a habit but those who did had to endure pain that most people can only imagine in the holds of their ships
For the most part the chefs did manage to keep the rats out of the cooking pots but if u feel out of ur hammock u would be woken by being bitten by them. They were a constant problem on the ships
Still beats the modern corporate world
great content!
oh no , why did he try the opium? :(
Real story from 4:00 onwards: The guy is a mischievous draft gang leader and runs a trade fleet. He has three companions, who invite you on a drink at the local pub. They get you drunk, and make you sign a contract. You pass out and wake up onboard their ship. A stranger picks you up violently, then handing you the contract you signed. Congrats, you got drafted to the merchant fleet.
As someone who grew up in Indonesia, this is very interesting to hear the story of a VOC crew as opposed to Indonesian struggle to rid of the colonists. Thank you for this videos!
Third video of your content I’ve watched and you’ve earned my subscription my friend. Well done ❤
Wow. I hope those guys made a good life for themselves when they got here.
I don't want you to die on a boat so get out with no way to support yourself and don't come back ever.
❤❤❤❤❤

Long term opiate use essentially changes how you think permanently. I cant really prove that, and I dont know if it can be proven since thought processes arent discrete things, but as someone who was on them for 20 years and who knows many people who are or have been on them, it's a subtle thing but it is there. It's like... an inability to project into the future to decide if doing something now is what you want or if it would be beneficial to you. The examples you can come up with, if you stop and try, dont encompass enough reasonable possibilities to be informative.
I was a long term user and based this on my own experience. Would agree it does change the brain. Thankfully been free for 4 years now.
My new favourite channel to listen to while I toil away
My mongolian homie said chingus and i was like whaat you guys just let us say his name wrong.
Portuguese allies? Portugal was subjected under the king of spain due to have lost his king. I was strip of his glory by the spanish and made to trade slaves.
Good to see that India's street food hasn't changed in a few hundred years.
Im a recovering drug addict so not a fan of the bit about addiction at the end 😂 had to stop listening!
I am a recovering drug addict as well (Opiates) so wrote it to help my recovery...to remind me how horrible withdrawal and PAWS is...its all about perspective...you and I are FREE...this to me just re-enforces that.
"just like the men you have read about" - a historical channel thinking lowly sailors would be literate in 1600 ? 😂
Then you would be mistaken if you thought this wasn't possible. The Netherlands in the mid 17th century had the highest literacy rate in Europe at about 73% so it would have been more likely that he was literate as opposed to not being literate especially working on a farm with bookkeeping requirements. This was based on a lot of research before I wrote it :) ourworldindata.org/grapher/estimated-historical-literacy-rates I appreciate your comment though as it provides me with an opportunity to respond as others may think the same. I also list this in my citations in the description.
Such a proud history of freedom and independence, all given up to the US fascist empire, just as all of Western Europe. A historical tragedy that will not be appreciated in our own time.
People all believe the propaganda and brainwashing that the EU empires were only malign, along with the fact a truly malign empire of today does not even exist. 😢 Both of these are required for the system to work. Along with plenty of propaganda that it would be a bad thing to raise wages and living standards - much better that the rich take everything
The only fascist empire at the moment is Russia.
@@YoreHistory I don't think you understand what fascism means, which is pathetic for a history channel. Fascism is an economic system where the interests of corporations are fused with the state, at the expense of the citizens. This is why the media completely changed their opinion on Milei once it turned out he was an actual fascist, not what they pretend fascism is, like they initially thought
@@YoreHistory you may be interested in educating yourself on the fact that Germany was never fascist, they were under a socialist system and that was the primary reason for the war. There are channels on here that do a deep dive into their socialist economy
@@YoreHistory once you read the above and have been educated as to what fascism actually means, noone who is being intellectually honest could ever deny that is the USA - their entire system is about controlling the economy and systems of other nations to ensure a certain class is in charge and international corporations including their private military industry benefit, while suppressing true democracy, which is fundamentally incompatible with fascism I.e. "populism is extremely dangerous." (See Pelosi's speech at the Oxford Union.) Unless you are just not very bright 🌞 I live in a western European nation that is part of the US empire - barely a week goes by that people are not outraged as the government acts against our own interests to benefit the US and her corporations. I am guessing you are American, as you are the only people on the globe that deny you have one of the largest empires ever seen (while you militarily occupy nearly 200 countries across 800 bases. Before you say it's voluntary (no 1 no it's not - Syria etc) then tell me what happens when a nations government asks you to leave, or goes against your interests as Sweden, Holland and Australia have all had leaders who tried to. What happened to them I wonder? (A sticky end and the nation fully committing once again to the empire)
What’s VOC for heavens sake, we are not all acronym out Americans
It is in the description. It also takes literally 3 seconds to google. But here it is "Dutch East India Company" :)
It would be cool if you did one of these videos from the view of a ship captain. I'm sure it would be a night and day experience. If I were a young lad in this day and age I would seek employment amongst local fishing boats, until I had enough experience to be an officer on merchant voyages, or perhaps join the navy.
I was stationed at an US Air Force communications site just outside of Fukuoka (Hakata). I have been fascinated by the battles but have been unable to find factual information about these battles. The Japanese versions of these events, especially in the Hakata area was more folklore than fact. This video presented the vital pieces of information that I have been looking for over the intervening 40 years. Thank you!
my grandma was almost adopted by a dutch family some time before japan start taking their short turn colonizing the country💀
The potato “famine” was half famine half genocide of the Irish. The British willing gave food to the Protestant Irish but if you were a Catholic you starved. The Irish who converted to get food were often referred to as “Soup takers”.
I wonder how they reacted when they first got taste of asian food
Sounds fuckin great
HANK!!!
Glad I found this channel, I love it
My butthole is bleeding. It might have something to do with last night’s activities.
Thinking.........🤔 What smell would it be in those ships after been used 30 or more years. 😅
You don't even want to begin to imagine. Im guessing you have walked around certain alley's in Amsterdam with an aroma? Now imagine that aroma boxed in with nowhere to go...plus bad hygiene and other "things"...blech.
@@YoreHistory Correct, same i did visit fishmarkets in South Amerika and India. 🤮😅 I love all info about the history of the VOC, keep on doing the good work ! Thanks 👋😄
actually very well written.. you wrote this?
Thank you and yes I did.
@@YoreHistory respect ❤ u got yourself a new sub
This is so well done! Thank you!
If I was born in 1655 Netherlands, I know what meal I'm gonna have for my birthday in 1672 (a certain politician)
If you’re not Dutch, you’re not much !!!
Great vid. Keep it up. This is a great channel.
This could make a good movie.
798 years since Genghis khan died im glad that i lived not even close to his era.
Some of the best historical fiction ever heard!
That was great. Subscribing!
Very good written story
Brilliant, very interesting and exciting. Ronnie Corbett and Ronnie barker eh?
Had to pay homage :)
Sounds just like China 2024
That was the time my ancestors came from the Netherlands to South Africa
Yes many of us went there :)
Lots has improved. Except the Dutch food.
LOL shots fired!
Even today, crewing agents still misrepresent what a ship or job is really like. I know because I'm a merchant marine. Once you're on the ship, you're stuck there for six months. I'm referring to ships on foreign voyages. On ships that stay within the United States, it's not uncommon for crew members to quit and walk off at the next port.
