    Just had a coffee in KL with a mate from Aberdeen 3 days ago (shes Aberdonian, visiting friends in KL) she said more shops are closing down these days in Aberdeen, and at times she had to travel down to Dundee for shopping, is it really that bad?

  • @scottg2754
    @scottg275414 күн бұрын

    Can't fully speak to the needing to travel to Dundee, but I do know some shops are closing. The M&S at St. Nicholas Centre is going to close as the one at Union Square is expanding. Most of the new stuff on Union Street is restaurant-based. The newest two places are a German Doner shop and a Popeye's Chicken. It isn't ideal for some stuff and even the LUSH location from Union Street moved to Union Square just in time for Christmas at the end of last year. The plan is to "revitalize" Union St, but not sure how that will happen if it is partly closed for such a ridiculous length of time. When they have to put up signs saying "OPEN FOR BUSINESS", that doesn't feel ideal.

    Given that you're coming from Canada originally (although I think I saw you mention you'd been in China for awhile also?), what did you find the hardest to adjust to in Aberdeen? I'm coming from the States, but I've spent a lot of time in various locations primarily in South America so I'm not your typical secluded North American. I'm curious though what I should expect as far as potential surprises that'll catch me off guard about Aberdeen specifically and Scotland more broadly. I've heard quite a lot about the seagulls... 😂

    @@pixiwix the seagulls! I was dive-bombed today and it was a direct hit. Not seeing that as lucky, but that's what you hear. Originally from Scotland, raised mostly in Canada. I spent 14 years in China. Glad you're not the secluded type. Appointments for service calls are similar to the US...be prepared to wait. Language will be different. I grew up with it and still occasionally get caught out. Business hours are shorter than in a major city in the US. I got used to long hours in China (10-10 was common everywhere there, but not like that here). More pubs than you're used to, but so much less than there used to be. In Scotland, the NHS works relatively well for healthcare, but similar to what I had in Canada. A lot of the differences were little things, which makes them hard to necessarily pinpoint

    Oh no - so the stories really are true then! Hopefully the attack was minor and the offending bird was left with a sense of shame and guilt so eternally deep so as not to ever do it again. 😂 In the same way that many around the world grew up steeped in American movies/music/culture, I grew up with English/Irish/Scottish movies/music/culture. While I fully realize it's not a substitute for learning it organically, I think I should be okay with most of the language differences (easy to say now, I suppose...I might change my mind after arrival). I guess I'll just have to dive in head first (which, thankfully, I'm well accustomed to at this point). Thanks for your helpful replies and, as always, your wonderful content! ❤

    @@Sp0oney1 Thank you! I'll keep you posted as I make my way around the city. Union Street has a "working wall" like I used to see in China on construction sites when I lived there. I should be in the area in the next couple of days to shoot the progress, assuming I can actually see any.

    Interesting how LIDL promotes Scottish identity using its flag and makes an effort to source Scottish foods but for its English stores, NOTHING! No effort to source from England!

    When I lived in Canada, I always bought Canadian first and would check labels. All I see them doing with this is saving me a step. If you look at their cheeses, you'll find they are well marked too. Also, Morrison's does the same. So does ALDI.

    @@_RabbitLeader I get that. Just pointing out they're not the only ones doing it. What I was saying about what I did in Canada was just to show I did it to avoid buying anything American in Canadian supermarkets or anywhere whenever I could. That was a personal choice then and now.

  • @_RabbitLeader

    Well you would be upset if LIDL did not promote Canadian products in Canada as they are failing to promote English sourced foods in England or fly any English foods as they do with Scottish and Welsh flags.

    @@_RabbitLeader not disagreeing with that. I wonder how much complacency there is among English consumers. My actions began in response to advertising I used to see from the US. That made me check labels. Some products are highlighted here and in Wales, but I am in the minority for checking for myself. I wonder how many in England actually check. You're right that they could do that as a company too, but I suspect you're also in a minority for spotting that they don't highlight there.
