Masterpiece. First saw this played on film live in 1977 at a midnight showing of Live At Pompeii at a little cinema in Cannock, West Midlands. Saw it live at the Glasshouse in Newcastle 2024, and cried my way through! Incredibly moving.

Very nice images, Peter. I just rebuilt my old Ultima 11 and purchased my first non-DSLR camera, an ASI174MM as well. You have definitely given me quite the goal to strive for from an image quality point of view!

Great processing! Have you tried to add a barlow?

Wonderful work indeed. I have a question I hope you can help me know the power in my image as you calculated yours at 8192 given your telescope focal length of 1016 and the TeleVue barlow at 4x, then you used the 3x digital zoom (which is actually Zero Zoom). My telescope is Meade 12" with Focal Length of 3048 and I use a Canon EOS T5i, if I use the TeleVue Powermate 5x what would the final number be (The one you have for yours is 8192) ? And what is the sequence of parts that need to be used? is it Scope + TeleVue + Diagonal + T.Adapter + Camera ? Thank you again

+amaraen hi - the sequence of equipment used was: scope, skyglow and moon filter, 4x televue, t-mount adapter, 2x tele-extender, then the camera. I wouldn't advise imaging using a diagonal. For your scope the focal length would be in the region of 16500mm, as the 5x teleview's power is 5x at around 5cm, and the gap between some t-mount adapters, and the canon sensor is around 6-7cm, so its power maybe around 5.8-6.5x

Superb! have you shared somewhere all the settings used on the EOS 600D to take this kind of Video? thanks

mick rose Hi Mick, thanks - here are the settings I usually use with the 600D 1920x1080 @30fps with the 3x digital zoom set (note: at 3x it is actually recording the image captured from the central region of the sensor with no digital zoom applied) - also; to get 30fps you have to set the "video system" option to NTSC, else you can only record upto 25fps The shutter speed for moon images is usually around 1/120s and ISO anything upto 1600 (depending how bright the image is on the histogram) - I often set the camera to Faithful (with no contrast or sharpening), or if required - set it to Standard with Sharpening set to 4.

mick rose - Hi Mike - I have sent a private message, but for some reason a lot of strange text was also included after I pasted it in from word - I have sent the message again, and the additional strange text was not present !

I re-edited the images of the clouds (Michael Bay'd the tones) to bring out the NLC's a little more, and added some titles, and about 6 seconds of video that I missed from the last upload - directors cut?
