    Zero Mission and Black Mesa seem to make up a template for how to do an ideal remake. Recontextualize the old stuff that doesn't make sense, add some extra stuff that hints at later series entries, change up the endgame to surprise players of the older entry.

    i love the Metroid series so much, really but i have never really dug Fusion. The suit looks beyond stupid and the constant handholding not only ruins the isolation but also the exploration. But for a GBA title, it's pretty good.

    haven't watched the video yet, but came here to tell that AM2R is much much much better than Return of Samus for 3DS. In fact the 3DS game is the only bad 2d metroid.

    Undertale Yellow is a fanmade game based on the critically acclaimed game Undertale, which was released in 2015 and the fan project started production in 2016, only one year later. The fan game was eventually released back in 2023. Which means it took over 7 years to be complete. But boy is it an amazing fangame if you love Undertale. 💕

    I would highly recommend playing Super Metroid Redux, a ROM hack that gives Samus her GBA controls. Its hard mode is super difficult, similar to Zero Mission's. There's also an option to increase Samus' weight, so she controls even more like the GBA games. And the map adds doors.

    Great review! I especially appreciate you recommending the fan mod of AM2R. Something that always should be noted when it comes to Metroid. There is an entire genre of games named after it, that seems to be the sign when a game is truly honoured.

    Great review! I think you touched on some key points and observations. I am impressed that you picked up on some of the subtle things like the lack of other life as you get deeper into the planet and closer to the queen. This was my first Metroid game I ever played and it made me a lifelong Metroid fan. I beat it as a kid without a map and had to figure it out, I'm proud of myself for doing so. Is it the best Metroid? No certainly not but in my opinion it is one of the best at atmosphere and using the game play to convey a feeling like as you mentioned claustrophobia and isolation. Yes while the enemy variety is low it does fit the point of the game you are here to kill the Metroids.

    Regarding the Varia, yes it's out of the way on the normal sequence but Zero Mission is a game that begs for its sequence to be broken. You can get it as soon as you have the bombs if you have the skill for a tough bomb jumping challenge, or you can come back once you have the Power Grip where it's still challenging but at least a little easier.

    Definitely one of the best remakes out there. I’m torn between this and Ys: Oath in Felghana being the best remake. The original game Wanderer’s from Ys is considered the worst in the series and Oath became one of the best, if not the best in the series.

    Going through these retrospectives and enjoying them so far, but had to make one comment about the run button. I agree it would have been better to not have it at all and just always be running, but my workaround is to map run to the R button. You do lose one direction for aiming, but you almost never need to aim down diagonally while not moving so that's the one I sacrifice.

    I just finished a whole playthrough of this game, and I just remapped run to my controller's trigger, that way I didn't have to do thumb acrobatics. I also remapped the diagonal aiming to the left bumper and trigger. Super intuitive that way I think

    18:30 Well they could've also added the mic to the controls and have you blowing at your 3DS for some functions. lol Speaking of controllers. That's probably the reason why you drop it more than once to play Switch even if the game was good. Playing on the 3DS I always found so uncomfortable to the hands. It was the main limiter of me playing long sessions as opposed consoles, or even the PSP that although also small I didn't have issues with how to pick the device. The Amiibo thing was such a bullshit thing to do. Not only were they hard to find. But where I live the only way to get them was online and with shipping and what not were more expenisve than the game itself. Plus having the 3DS not the new, means I needed to buy the reader.

    Genesis was a Xenomorph reference. Eyeless, humanoid but still clearly a monster, acid spit. Given Metroid's roots are in the Alien franchise, it's fitting to make Genesis an "ancient" race. iirc DoctorM64 made the boss is about a day before release. While I'm a bit of a purist and always recommend the 1.1 version, something interesting about the "fan" updates is the metroid rebalances. In 1.0, Omega Metroids were very tough. They were nerfed for 1.1, but 1.0 also had some game crashing bugs (that I didn't experience but heard about) so it's not so simple as "play the 1.0 version". That's where 1.5 (and maybe beyond) comes in. The first Omega is like the 1.1 version and the Nest ramps up into the 1.0 versions. Alphas and I think Gammas are also more diverse specifically in which ones dodge and how much health they have.

    okay, i'm sure i'm doing something wrong (i'm pretty bad at dodging her attacks and missed collecting some energy tanks and missiles), but it really confused me that you said Ridley is harder than Mother Brain. like, i beat Ridley in my second attempt, but i started a new playthough because i couldn't beat Mother Brain yet. well, i guess it's about time to try again 🤷. also: i gotta disagree with your praise of the map. i do love the varied environments but it's so huge and confusing. i spent so much time running in circles and into dead ends, and the fact that the map doesn't show doors made it pretty frustrating. well i did get used to it more, and also i just got less ashamed to use external maps. i guess you just have better navigational skills, but not everyone has those 😅.

  • @basedsamtv
    @basedsamtv16 күн бұрын

    yeah I look at this map as sort of a fine wine that ages better the more familiar you are with the game. the first playthrough can be a bit confusing and unintuitive, but on repeat runs where you'll likely know about the advanced tricks and sequence breaks, there really isn't any other map that offers the same level of freedom. I could've made that perspective a bit more clear in the video itself!

  • @sofia.eris.bauhaus
    @sofia.eris.bauhaus14 күн бұрын

    @@basedsamtv yeah, i definitely found it getting easier with time, having almost finshed my second run. though i still don't get how you say Ridley is harder than Mother Brain. I beat her now, but it was not easy. meanwhile i started another save and gave Ridley another try in a 100% run, and this time i blew him up first try without him having to pick me up. i dunno, Ridley gives you a lot of room to dodge, wheres with MB you're just crammed in that tiny room and she takes up half of that and i get hit with just about any attack…

  • @basedsamtv
    @basedsamtv14 күн бұрын

    i personally found mother brain's attacks easier to dodge, the only attack i found kind of tricky to dodge is the fireball/rocket/ketchup attack when she's at low health. ridley moves faster and can swoop in from off screen, not giving a ton of time to react, especially when he goes for grabs. just shows that different people struggle with different things, i guess!

    she doesn't need the power grip with the zero suit because she's using her hands, not huge chunky metal robot gloves, one of which is also a cannon, and she doesnt have the extra weight of a big metal suit. always made sense to me - it's actually this aspect that convinces me of the "fusion suit is light enough not to need power grip" theory

    There's something sad about this due to the fact that Nintendo will never make another 2D Metroid game, because the 2D art is part of the charm of the franchise. I'm not sure to say if i miss it, but it's like saying goodbye to an old friend. Games evolve and we have to move on with them.
