Great video! I can’t tell you how amazed and happy I was a couple years ago to discover that most of the techniques in the kata I started learning 20 years ago included a lot of grappling and throwing techniques. It was like I’d been living in a 2D world and then suddenly being able to see in 3D!

I have so much appreciation for the open minds of the new Martial Artists. It is a breathe of fresh air to see and come to realize the future will be that much greater for the new genereation through these great Master and Grand Masters. I have studied a few areas of martial arts and have been condemned by each one except those who were open minded. Some are still closed minded to believe that their style is the most supreme. It is slowly being realized that there is not just one method. Years ago I was told if I left Shotokan Karate and went to another style (Tae Kwon Do) not to return. Once in Tae Kwon Do I was also warned of the same thing. I did go but years later my instructors realized that no style has the corner on the arts market. I only wish that life was longer so I could experience many more styles and put more time into them. Thank you so much for sharing.

Judo is still Jujutsu. Kano said that “Jujutsu are merely the techniques. But Judo is a way of life”. The techniques of Judo are the same ones in various koryu Jujutsu styles. Kano mostly practiced two styles of Jujutsu and dabbled in various others to create Judo. Old Jujutsu techniques are still effective to this day. Which goes to show have an old martial art still has it’s effectiveness after hundreds of years.

Ever since I was a young boy I've love the East and orient! I have a deep appreciation for China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia and places such as Vietnam. These cultures fascinate me, especially Japan with it's ancient traditions and codes of conduct. I cannot wait until I have the money to tour the east. I've been to many places, but not hear! One of the ancient cultures I love is the Persians, not Iran today but old Persia. Iran is too violent and homophobic for my taste, but I have no issue with Persian people! I just love these cultures. I even like the Romans apart from some of the practices but I'm English and we have Roman history here as well. I've been to military re-enactments in my county and I really enjoyed it. China is like the UK as we have thousands of years of rich history and heritage!!!!

Traditional Karate is a big thing, but one has to find a master who 1) is not obsessed by winning tournaments, sport Karate is just 1% of it; 2) is as humble as to invite masters of grappling styles and let his students cross train a little, you need to be grabbed and thrown by a wrestler or choked by a bjj guy to learn how to react in those scenarios.

@@johncena12366Eh not necessarily true. It depends on the student’s goals and the dojo’s goals. I’ve seen dojos that compete but are terrible in many many ways including where the instructors and students go out if their way to verbally and physically abuse lower ranking students. I’ve also seen dojos that don’t emphasize competition but foster a wonder learning environment for everyone. Also, what KIND of competition?! Point sparring? Full contact with gear? Full contact without gear? Full contact but no face hits? Full contact with head kicks but no punches? Full contact with MMA rules? What if they compete in Kata but not sparring? Or compete sparring but not kata competitions? That’s just a pointless rule

If the opportunity is there, yes that would be a fantastic instructor to learn from. But sadly those are few and far between. The first concern is to just find an instructor who’s close enough that a person can go train consistently. Cross training can come later. Even if the instructor doesn’t encourage it, a good student can seek it out for themselves later. My first Dojo 20 years ago didn’t encourage cross training but it still got me started on a path that’s since led me to cross train on my own with several other schools and styles.

That's something that has been perplexing me, is how to correctly move my hip in these basic katas. Like if move hip same direction as im blocking or opposite direction of my block. Sounds like you're saying pull your hip back as you block. Where it gets tricky in my style is 3-5, we do an outside block, then rising block after the downblock. That's where the hip gets really complicated for me. I asked my sensei about loading the hip for these basic katas because his son does. He showed me something else for generating more force and brushed oft the hip in these katas. As they're white and yellow belt katas in our style. Though being the obsessed perfectionist that I am. I just can't get it off my mind. 😅

After many years of martial arts, I’m now exploring various styles of kung fu without being tethered to one specific style. I’m loving the drills from choy Lee fut and bagua zhang.
