    Hello sir from South Africa 🇿🇦. I was looking for a k13s, but came accross a K1200s with only 11k kilos on the bike. Now I am considering the K12. Very seldom will a bike come up with low mileage like that. Would you know the main differences better the 2 bikes? apart from bigger engine capacity.... thanks for the nice review, and ride safe....

    Awesome man! Just picked one up myself. Apparently the Idle issue can be connected to the air intake box, one fix is to replace it with a K 1300 box.

    HI, are they effective? i mean, do you know someone who dropped the bike with non consequences?

  • @russellsrides7458
    @russellsrides74583 жыл бұрын

    I don't have any examples of if they would be effective, however I'm pretty confident that your bike would be quite well protected in a tip-over. A crash probably wouldn't matter. I do know the plastics and other bits can be very expensive to replace, so extra protection can't hurt. They also look good, excellent place to add driving lights, which will make you more visible and bags are available to attach too.

    Any more insights on the F800 comparison you made in the start of the video? I'm quite interested in these two specific bikes. My take is that the F800 (ST) would be my sensible choice, while the K1200S is just much more 'bike' in every aspect. Including weight, which makes me doubt even more: I can pretty easy flick the F800 around (had it for a short test ride), but adding like 50 kilo's in weight might for me be the difference in easy manouvring or scared to drop it every time I try to take it out the garage.. 😅

  • @russellsrides7458
    @russellsrides74583 жыл бұрын

    I think it would depend on your riding experience. Both bikes are great. The F800 has plenty of power, lightweight and easy to ride, but for me seemed to be more of a beginner or intermediate ride, based on bikes I've owned before. For unknown reasons to me, they weren't overly popular, so can be found for a great price. The K1200S checks all the boxes...smooth, easy to handle, inline 4 sounds amazing, well balanced, so easy to move around the garage and very fast, but I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner, or relatively new rider.

    @@russellsrides7458 Won't say I'm a beginner, but far from an expert rider as well. I do compromise a possible lack of experience with carefulness and previous owner a Triumph Sprint 1050 and a SpeedFour (similar to the TT600) The SpeedFour was to small for my legs, but loved the light weight playfulness. The Sprint suited me better in riding position, but with just 74kg, gave me a hard time manouvring it around. Guess I'm just afraid I'll find the F800a but of a dull but, as it doesn't stand out like the K12.

  • @russellsrides7458
    @russellsrides74583 жыл бұрын

    Merijn Sakko sounds like you're not in the beginner category. In my opinion, dull is a good description for the F800...it will get you where you want to go, with reliability along with good looks, but the K1200S will put a big smile on your face every time you ride it...and the more you ride it, the more confident you'll be.

    These problems were sorted out on the K1300s. They get a few problems with the clutch but you can get an updated 1300 fitted at BMW. Radiator and down pipe problems too.

    The BMW K1200S is a fantastic bike and has definitely been one of my favourites. Other than routine maintenance, like oil changes, I haven't had to do anything to the bike, nor have I had any issues with the bike. I can certainly understand why you're looking at buying one, but I'm not sure it should be your first bike...There are some things you should consider and ask yourself, when acquiring your first ride. What is your skill level in handling a motorcycle? Most people learn on a smaller bike, which is lighter and easier to maneuver and upgrade as their confidence and riding ability improves. An introductory riding course is highly recommended and those are usually completed on a small 250 and even after that, it's only given you the very basics in motorcycle riding. The real experience takes time on the roads and remember, you're not protected with seat belts and steel. Sit on the bike for fit. Do you feel comfortable on it? Does it feel too big or just right? Jumping straight into a 1200cc 165 HP motorcycle may not be a wise decision for a new rider. They are capable of speeds in access of 270kmph, which could be deadly in an inexperienced riders hands. You can be seriously injured or killed on any motorcycle, so you must ride with your ability and not the bike's capability. If you jump straight into a high performance motorcycle, you must respect what it can do...a simple twist of the throttle could put you into trouble pretty quickly. Take your time and get used to your bike in a controlled manner. So, now I've gotten the downer out of the way, here are the pluses with the BMW K1200S from my perspective as an experienced rider. The bike is a little heavy at about 500ibs, but it is well balanced and has a low seat height and I can easily flat foot. It's extremely smooth and shifts through the gears beautifully. The riding position is quite upright and is very comfortable and easy to maneuver at both slow and fast speeds. It has heated grips, which is a nice feature on a chilly day here in Canada. I like having a gear indicator, so I always know what gear I'm in...especially when down shifting and clutch control is effortless. The bike has great aerodynamics and cuts through the wind with ease with very little wind buffering and I imagine it would be a great long distance bike. The BMW K1200S is a beautiful well made motorcycle and I highly recommend them...ride safe! Let me know how you make out!
