I figure when your opponent weighs 135 and is wearing 50 pounds of armor, and is coming at you with a sword supplying a ton of momentum, you can probably just fall/roll/step out of the way as he faceplants and will be pulling grass out of his ears for the next week. This is like pure principles with nothing extra. Just pure pulling and pushing and twisting people off balance.

Kata is so boring. I was losing interest in judo due to kata: the straw that broke the camel's back was that there was a misunderstanding with the grading timing (I was 'late') and wasn't allowed to grade the week after. I left ju jitsu due to the same reason: the only 'good' thing about ju jitsu was you learn which attack is better countered with a judo throw and which is better countered with an aikido lock. I enjoy MMA more

Your Sensei failed you. Your school failed you. They should have teached you the inherent principles and functionalities of each Kata (in particular the Randori-no-kata for Tachi- and Ne-Waza). These are so valuable lessons for each Judoka to improve his skills in Shiai (full fight) and even top players got even better by learning Kata. But I sense they showed you kind of a dance, bloodless patterns, focused on formalities to make it „look good“. Sad.
