Looks awesome. Tough ride too.
Great video, OM. S2S with N7MTB. COOL! Really liked the activation QSO audio overlayed on the ride down :) 73 es tnx fer sharing!
Hahaha! Excellent use. I've picked up a couple of these in some pretty remote areas. Ugh!
I'm surprised Californistan has not outlawed helium balloons.
I always pitch my voice up when calling on SSB.
420 items 🤣
It is a versatile little tray 😀
good
Thanks cool!
I will put together a video of the inside bits and "paddle" mod at some point.
Hoe would you compare the RX Performances?
kzread.info/dash/bejne/nqKtz7SFeNnTp6Q.html
Wait until you get to the numbers and prosigns!!!
I have gotten some bonus numbers in the log. Five was kinda scary as I thought an I was on the way.
With enough post activation diner stops, this is an attainable goal. GL in the New Year!
Those dehydrated hiker meals could help. The Chili Mac would bump up the wpm 😀
Is there a SOTA fart badge? I think this might be less attainable than GOAT status.
There should be!
I can call CQ with my farts. It involves having children pull my finger with the correct rhythm. Only old farts can do this, mind you.
Good to recognize it and leave it all behind you.
the stupidest comparison
Out of curiosity, how do you like the FX-4CR, compared to your IC-705? I'm surprised that I haven't seen the FX4CR in an activation video yet.
I need to get some videos out. I have shooting some video but having a tough time finding time to put them together. I have a done a dozen plus activations with it. It is a good radio, but it does have some quirks. I think I will give it a dedicated activation video and talk about it.
Have you had it switch bands on you will transmitting CW?
I have not had that happen. When on an earlier firmware I did have the whole radio freeze up.
You're an animal!! Impressive ride--KB6QEW
Thanks Man!
Do you know what digital modes it will do with the internal soundcard? Winlink?
My apologies for missing the question. It is a full blown audio interface so any of the digital modes (in theory) should work.
Congrats on the activation!
Thanks, we had a lot of fun.
Another video of this day: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gHqZy7eppLHXm5c.html
Great ride and MTB SOTA adventure! Thanks for the video, Bill, 73 ---mark, KM6ZPO
Indeed!
another awesome video, hope to catch you on the air de KN4OK
Thanks!
Haha grandpa and his CB Radio 😂 📻
Great video again. Good skills riding blind on those sketchy trails. Regards vk5cz ..
Thanks! 👍
Looking forward to seeing some video of that little guy in action on a summit.
Coming to a KZread channel near you!
Just watched your video on Burnt Mountain. Serious question, why do you all do this?
Answering that question is a great idea for a video. It would be better spoken about than typed.
I walked up there about two months ago and the RFI coming off the radio tower was very loud. I didn't even bother activating. Looks like it can be done though so I might try again. How far away from the radio tower were you?
I was a fair ways from the tower. I was in the rocky area in the far west end of the summit.
Looks like a fantastic trail, maybe we will have to hook up to do a N6MTB & W7MTB joint activation sometime. Congrats on getting France on SSB! I've gotten him on CW but not SSB yet. 73 W7MTB
You bet!
Great video nice to meet you on YT. vk5cz ..
Thanks!
Thanks for the QSO and the QSL! Nice vid... running the QSO audio over the MTB footage is great! 73
Thanks! I was trying to figure out how to tie to the two activities together in a video format that would not bore either group to much. Glad you are liking it.
Looks like you had a very successful HF day and a real fun ride back home. Let be the background chatter while watching the MTB videos.
Thanks Mark, that was a good day on the bike and radio.
12:00 "How long do you stay on frequency?" As you said, entirely up to the activator. There are factors that only you as an activator can make a decision on (amount of daylight remaining, weather conditions on the summit etc). I've activated a summit in 3 minutes (video on my channel "This 3 minute SOTA activation was completely electric"). I've also spent almost 3 hours on a summit when I've operated multiple bands & had a massive pileup on every band! I personally don't like pulling the plug before everyone has had a opportunity to make the contact. If possible, I make a point of staying on the air until the pileup dies out & people have stopped calling. I generally keep going until I've called CQ around 4-5 times without getting a response. In 110 activations I've only gone against this principle 3 times, when weather conditions have become dangerous & I pulled the plug early on safety grounds:- The first occasion there were some very dark thunder clouds approaching. The second occasion the winds picked up becoming so extreme that I struggled to stand up & my vertical antenna very literally became horizontal. This meant that a rapid descent to lower altitudes where it was more sheltered was required! The last occasion it started snowing unexpectedly (not forecast) & I wasn't kitted up for it. It suddenly got really cold & there was a risk of hypothermia. Ultimately it's down to the activator. You should never feel pressured to stay on air, especially if conditions are poor & safety is a concern.
Thanks for feedback. That is a solid way of looking at it. I really have not had to deal with a pileup yet. It has more been a case of wondering "with no other pressing issues" what is a courteous window for the chasers after the spot.
Nice video, 73 de ON4MGY
Thank You!
interesting video. Important to use spot and alert on Sotawatch. now using 20 m is better for contact. what antenna you haved. Antenna is the key for a good result. good luck and perseverance. alain f8feo
Thanks Alain, I did do a spot on this outing and got two folks from the spot with in minutes. After that I had a contester running QRO park on my initial freq.
I'd say more of a Mountain biker with a Ham problem. Thanks for the video, inspired me to look for a new call sign in my region! I've done one ride up activation with another youtuber, kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZnioysSpYdLHn5M.html and now may need to do some more.
Thanks! I checked out that video, very cool. I'm still trying to figure out what kind of mix to do in the videos of MTB and Radio. Great area you are in up there. I loves me some PNW in the summer!
Great video. Maybe a 2m hand held would help round up a few more contacts to make your score. You have some nice trails to ride as a bonus. Regards vk5cz ..
Funny on my next activation, I took my IC-705 but forgot to bring the VHF/UHF antenna. But I did the points. As look would have it there was another contest going on, but this time I figure out there exchange and got a couple of them in the log :-)
A good attempt, stunning location and thanks for sharing your experience. A shame you didn’t get the points but it’s all part of the experience I guess, my first activation and video, I forgot to take my mic so it took 2 trips lol, thankfully not a big mountain. Keep climbing and keep sharing. 73
Thanks! Yeah I chock it up to a learning experience.
Competing with contests is tough when all you've got is a (tr)uSDX. I carry a radio that can get me onto the WARC bands on contest weekends. I think you'd have an easier time when there aren't all those 100w stations stepping on you. You can partially solve the problem by narrowing your receive filter, but it doesn't help the guy trying to hear you.
I also have an IC-705 but the graphics board failed inside of 30 days so it was being shipped back to exchanged when I did this activation. The (tr)uSDX is a fun little radio but that filtering is a bit of a bummer.
@@N6MTB I activated Box Elder Peak in Utah this summer using a (tr)uSDX. It was a >5100' ascent over 4.7 miles, so I had to minimize pack weight. It took a while to get to 4 contacts, but I finished up with 7 on 40m, plus two S2S. I would think twice about relying solely on this radio for such a big hike but I've since tweaked my settings so that I think I have a good chance of hearing weak signals. But it all depends on conditions on the day.
@@dangermandave67 I have an IC-705 as well, but the graphics chip on it had failed and it was being shipped back for an exchange at the time. I decided to go with what I had. I completely agree with you on it not being a good "daily driver" radio.
