SonOfChelsea

SonOfChelsea

Created in 2014, I set up this channel as a side passion project to share my views on the football club I support, Chelsea. Growing up in West London and coming from a family who've supported the club for generations, its a big part of my life and who I am.

Posting match previews and reviews to begin with, I started to gain a following, improving production quality whilst collaborating with other content creators on the platform to expand the channel's name, reaching 1K subscribers by October of 2015.

With a lot of hyperbolic, outlandish content on KZread regarding the sport, I felt there was a gap for a calmer, reasoned, in-depth type of channel as an alternative. Despite having to stop due to commitments to filmmaking and University, the channel sparked a journey into football media that hasn't stopped, leading me to meet and work with great people.

My intention is to give a rational perspective to an irrational sport.

    I just contest this as a given. There are base level things that every football team needs, if playing a more “technical” style means we lose aggression, off ball work that’s an issue. Dewsbury-Hall is not a better player than Gallagher, no matter what system you are playing.

    @@SonOfChelsea I beg to differ. I confess that I haven’t seen much of Dewsbury-Hall apart from some highlight reels, and he did have his best season last year against Championship opposition but he had far higher product in assists and goals than Conor. We looked much better when we had proper wide players in Sterling and Noni. The concentration of the team needs to go up. But he should have a better idea of his team going forward from now. • @monochromaticspider

    The biggest issue for me isn't that we crumble under pressure or that we can't do much against a congested middle or even that we're playing with Sanchez on goal. Those are issues but they all have theoretical solutions. The biggest issue, as I see it, is that our competitive adventage in terms of player quality are all going to underperform because the system was designed and optimized for a team that didn't have those players, and Maresca doesn't seem to care much to tweak the system to account for this. Palmer isn't best used as a right winger on the outside of the right half-space, he's the guy you want inside that right half-space. Nkunku is not a striker, not a winger outside the half-spaces, not a midfielder. He's the guy you want in the left half-space. And that leaves a single midfield opening for Lavia, Caicedo, Enzo, Casadei, Uguchuku and Santos. Need more than one midfielder? That costs one of Nkunku and Palmer being out of position, and it costs one of these midfielders being a half-space hunter instead. You can find all the excuses in the world for why losing out on these key players being in their optimal roles "makes sense" but for me it just isn't a good trade. Playing "positional" football in and of itself is not a victory but losing out on the peak performance of these four players sure feels like a big loss.

  • @SonOfChelsea
    @SonOfChelsea2 күн бұрын

    I agree with this tbh. Which is why for me, is irrelevant now, why ditching Poch progress for some trendy idea of “positional play” made little sense if you either don’t have time, players or resources that Pep has always enjoyed. Especially idea this is a “smarter” way of playing football is hilarious when it requires selling players like Chalobah, Gallagher and Petrovic, all three who were strong performers last season and good squad players. People also will have no patience and I sympathise with them, for this to take 6-9 months to produce anything resembling results given how much goodwill has already been burnt by the ownership. Effectively we are hoping that players like Nkunku and Palmer are good enough to rise above their environment or limitations of a rigid system. Or we see sense with Sanchez

    What worries me is that Maresca talks about having different players but he's not seemingly too concerned about making a system specifically for our players. It is premature to judge, of course, but I definitely do worry that Maresca is going to force our players into the boxes of his system, instead of changing the system to fit the players he has. Nkunku shouldn't be a classic winger. Palmer shouldn't be a classic winger. And neither of them should really be required to work as basic midfielders off the ball. James and Gusto are spectacular defensively but they're also very, very strong offensively. Having them be either mediocre centerbacks or mediocre defensive midfielders on the ball, depending on inversion, feels like a bad trade. Caicedo, Enzo, Lavia, Santos, they're all very good midfielders but are they number 10's? Should they be required to get into the box and have shots on goal? Is that really the best use of them? I hope we're getting a big surprise when we actually start playing games for real but so far I feel the system is a travesty. There's a potential for good football in it, absolutely. We can win games with it, absolutely. But it just feels like too much of a compromise for too many players.

  • @TobiSkinnies
    @TobiSkinnies3 күн бұрын

    There is no system that suits all players. Some would have to suffer for others to thrive. Especially for new managers at new teams. Even Ancelotti, who is the epitome of using players in their proper roles, has had to bench rodrygo because he doesn't suit the 4312 formation or system. Vinicius was able to adapt and has been productive in that LF role while Rodrygo has struggled in the RF role. Its normal and not something new. Thats why the transfer window exists...for coaches to buy players that suit their style and sell those that dont.

  • @monochromaticspider
    @monochromaticspider3 күн бұрын

    @@TobiSkinnies I agree. But which players do you compromise? Which players do you benefit? In our case, we don't really have high quality 8/10 hybrids. We don't really have high quality classic wingers. We do have spectacularly good attacking fullbacks. We have two amazing inside forwards. We have another two mega talents coming next year. So why are we not using inside forwards? Why are we not using attacking fullbacks? Who in the team benefits from this?

  • @TobiSkinnies
    @TobiSkinnies3 күн бұрын

    @monochromaticspider True. However, only the fullbacks have been hindered/ restricted so far. Our CAMs and Wingers would benefit greatly from this system under Maresca. Our marauding fullbacks are only the right side...cucurella isn't that type of fullback. And instead of overlapping, they are given the freedom to underlap which plays to their strengths. I mean...just look at Gusto in the last pre-season match. He was everywhere. As for James...he used to be so good at that too...but maybe years of playing differently has affected that inverted trait in him. However, Maresca has quickly found a solution by playing him in the back three. In a back three...he still gets to overlap alot especially with a sitting Dm that can drop to the right. And guess what...Caciedo used to play as a makeshift RB at Brighton. So whenever james bombs forward...caciedo just has to shift a bit to cover for him. Plus...not bombing forward all the time might actually help us keep james fit this season. Which is a plus. It might not be exactly what you want...but there are ways around it and Maresca seems to be finding them. And when Gusto returns to RB and inverts...cucurella and Veiga are more than capable of filling the LCB role.

And if we are playing pure 10's in those 8/10 hybrid midfield positions then how many top quality central midfielders does that leave on the bench? Yes, this system does benefit our wingers, but our wingers are arguably not as good as our midfielders and our 10's. I'd rather get more midfielders and 10's on the pitch than dedicate 20% of the outfield positions to classic wingers. There is a reason the game moved away from those. We're basically crowding out some of our best players in order to create a role for some of our weaker players.

    Probably helps to concentrate on facts and not on ludicrous flights of fancy. This whole episode is based around an imaginary conspiracy theory that Chelsea officials are trying to blame Conor Gallagher for the current situation, which then feeds into speculative nonsense about not wanting to win and disbanding the academy!!!! Some fans are going off their heads at the prospect of Gallagher being sold, in those circumstances it is perfectly reasonable for the club to provide the facts - that Gallagher has turned down contract offers from the club. Despite the accusation from SOC, the club has not claimed to have tried everything to keep Gallagher, they have, as quoted in an in-depth piece in the Athletic, tried to find a middle ground between Gallagher leaving or having to offer him a long-term deal. That middle ground position is sign for two more years and work your way into the new manager's first team ( Conor's rudimentary technique makes him a poor fit, let's be honest). Now, if you are marketing yourself as 'Mr Chelsea' you then have 3 more years at the Bridge (with a decent pay rise thrown in) which is the stuff of dreams Chelsea fans. But hold on, Conor wants to be Mr Chelsea on his terms, namely a six year contract, which he would see as a sign of faith. The sticking point here is that the sporting directors have just sacked a manager because they want to embed a possession-based culture at the club, so why on earth would they give a six-year deal to a player they deem incompatible with that style? What they can't allow to happen id for Conor to sign a pre-contract deal with Villa, Spurs or Ath ,Madrid and leave for free at the end of the season. They have rightly told him straight, either sign, leave or spend the season training with the academy players.

But what I would say is basically this: If you buy a seriously hardcore 4x4, a Nissan Patrol with a snorkel and everything, and you then carry on to only ever use your hardcore 4x4 vehicle on asphalt roads in good weather to buy groceries at your local supermarket... I mean, you probably could've done that more efficiently with a regular sedan, couldn't you? Or one of those spiffy three-door hatchbacks? A Prius, even? Who is Reece James as a player? He's a very strong defensive fullback that is also beastly in the last third in terms of getting past an opponent, final delivery, and taking a shot on goal. He's not the fastest and he struggles to handle explosive runs over and over without getting injured. Well, we're the slow and meticulous short passing team this season. We're not an explosive transition kind of of team. Even if we were using offensive fullbacks, it isn't obvious that they'd need to explode up and down the pitch like they had to under Poch. It is perfectly conceivable to have nominal wide forwards that come inside once the fullback makes it forward. But we're not doing that. We're doing other things but we're not using James' offensive capability. Likewise, we know that Gusto is 2 out of 3 for those same capabilities. Good 1v1, good delivery, so far no shooting ability. But we're not really using that either. A lot has been said about how we smashed Club America, but what people seem to be missing is that first half we were playing against the A-team going at it at half speed, much like we did against Celtic. Second half we played against the B-team. And in the second half, our wing play was mostly shut down. All any team has to do to seriously blunt our offense is not let their fullbacks be isolated, because we simply aren't doing a whole lot to support our wide players. So simple answer, yes, we are somewhat wasting James by not using his offensive abilities more. Whether that's a net win or a net loss, whether that waste allows us to use other players more efficiently, whether that waste allows for an overall more coherent team structure, obviously this remains to be seen. Ultimately, the metric for choices isn't whether individuals shine but rather whether the team is better at winning games.
