Great video. It looks like the issue is both the pulley and the drive hub, the 4 bolts look rotated round as well as the notches in the wrong place. Scary how badly out they get! I know people like to find tdc by putting a screw driver in the plug holes but I’ve always thought this doesn’t work on a 12a with a ldr rotor and sloping combustion chamber. Also the spark holes are symmetrical up and down on the housing. Doesn’t seem like there’s an easy way to find the timing without pulling the front pulley hub and checking the keywsy is at 9 o clock. And doing that is a risk of Torrington bearings slipping.

Hey Jon! Awesome tool, I’ve read that the E shaft keyway is 90° from TDC, curious if that’s an accurate number to machine marks on a pulley too or if it’s just a “rule of thumb” number, thanks 😎

In theory, yes you should be able to use the keyway as a reference for tdc. However, in my experience the keyway isn’t always cut perfectly. This is more common on some aftermarket billet cranks as opposed to the factory Mazda ones

Has anyone tried building a 2 rotor without the center housing? Just a single solid thin plate. And use PP so no center side ports. I think it would require a two piece shaft in order to assemble one. But it would be lighter, smaller, and shorter shaft.

It’s like anything else he makes out of unobtainium, you can’t get your hands on one in this lifetime. Which is literally true for me since I’m not getting any younger and can only do this for so many more years. Same for the rotor housing roller pin. It’s beyond frustrating

Does it display the current position of the gear selector (the stick) or the actual gear that the automatic transmission box currently in? For example, the gear selector may be in D and the actual gear could be 1, 2, or 3.

The sender unit attaches to & reads gear position from the linkage on the side of the transmission.

I’m in the process of assembling my first rotary engine. And came across the same thing, though it was weird. Being my first engine just thought that’s the way they were and it would compress in the housings. One thing I did notice was I had a side seal that some how it must have deformed and it was scraping the side and not allowing for it to spring back. Thanks Jon for what you doing helping guys like me.
