    I want to make floating shelves out of 1 in thick wood about 3 ft long and 12 inch width and I don't want to make huge holes in the wall the way you showed so I was thinking of maybe using some kind of flat metal and welding rods onto the metal or find brackets that already have the rods on a flat piece of metal that are the same thickness as the rods that you used I know I would have to grind a little bit into the wood so that the flat metal things would go into the wood and probably I would have to grind the metal on top and bottom to make it a skinnier profile so that it doesn't show when the wood is into the wall . it's to bad that KZread doesn't allow us to upload pictures they could have a feature where you could upload a picture and it'll be a tiny picture but then when you click on the picture the picture becomes large and you can see the picture in a large view but unfortunately KZread hasn't come up with that idea yet, because i have mad photo of what im trying to make

  • @HallbeamDesign
    @HallbeamDesignАй бұрын

    The rods in the video is 8mm thick (or about 3/8 inch) If you have a shelf that is 1inch you could use thicker rods with ease. If you dont want to make big holes in the wall i suggest you buy some floating shelves kit on amazon or you local hardware store. Exactly what i wanted to make. I want to use royal bolts instead of rods. Because the nook i have in made of concrete. And since my shelves are wider ill use small support brackets in the front left and right side. I wonder if that will work.

  • @HallbeamDesign
    @HallbeamDesignАй бұрын

    Take your time making the holes in the concrete 90 degres. Concrete will make these types of shelves even more durable. Small support brackers are also a good idea if you are going to place heavier objects on the shelves :) The support brackets will also help with the alignment if the holes in the wall are off by a degree. Good luck with your project! You are more than welcome to send pictures along the way to my instagram Hallbeam Design.

    I've been putting old roof beams straight onto brick and block work using this method. It actually helps if the holes aren't perfect as this makes them hold really well, though a mallet is required. You could use resin but it might be a bit hard to out again. I like the technique of getting rod into wood, that's going to be useful at some point I'm sure.

    Yes it would! As long as you drill the holes 90° straight into the brick wall behind. It will probably aslo be a stronger solution. It is a little bit harder and you might need to use a good plug och chemical plug in the wall to really secure the threaded rod into It :)

    I have not heard about briar root growing here in Spain, but I will check it out. I see that you manage to make pretty straight cuts handheld. It’s a challenge for me. I have a jigsaw and a circular saw. I was wondering if I should get a table saw, for true 90 degree cuts. A miter saw also could work, but mostly for cross cuts, I think. What is your experience with this? I am also thinking of buying a router… any thoughts on a first all purpose router?

  • @HallbeamDesign
    @HallbeamDesign4 ай бұрын

    A miter saw is extremely nice to have when starting more diy projects. I've owned ryobi, skil before and now I use a dewalt one. Ryobi and skil works fine, but I would go for a dewalt as it is much more precise. Making repetable 90° cuts is really nice. I can recomend the Green Bosch 1400 ACE for a good first router. It is quite large but will finish most cuts with good accuarcy. I would buy better router bits before buying a expensive router. Hope this helps. Buy yourself a miter saw and a router. You deserve it :)

    Great video! I too did some floating shelves in our linen closet. Similar to what happened to you, I assumed my closet corners, where the shelves were fitting snuggly into, were square. Unfortunately, they weren't square and required some "persuasion" with a rubber mallet. I also sanded the back edge of the wooden shelf so there wasnt a gap between the floating shelf and back wall in the closet. This DIY is a good one to follow for simplicity and attractive aesthetics. Cheers all!
