    I have a question, if I want to know the global diversity of my total area, do i I average my Simpson indices from every quadrats ? ex: if i find D=0.62 for my first quadrats and D=0.41 for my second, i can just do the average to know my simpsons indice ?

    You can’t customize error bars on excel

  • @PeterStanley
    @PeterStanley4 ай бұрын

    This (kzread.info/dash/bejne/dGGurcWMn7yzoZM.html ) is an older version of excel I used to work with (pre google sheets) and I thought it was quite a bit easier for this type of task. Might be what you are looking for.

    Oh wow, that was painful. I think I won't bother now! I got here because I thought picking "standard deviation" would help me - like it would compute the standard deviation of my series and use that for each point, but no. Wouldn't it be nice if they allowed you to just pick another column for error bars values? Did some more research on this - when you use "Standard deviation" it computes STDDEV of the entire series and the plots the error bars for each point centered around the median of the series. The number you enter is a multiplier on STDDEV so 1 for +- 1 standard deviation. This only works for a normally distributed series about a mean. You can't use it for an X-Y plot of a variable and a dependent value. There is a feature of charts where you enter two columns of values for X and Y, highlight those for a scatter plot and select aggregate values on the X-axis. So then if a row has the same X as another row then it can aggregate those values as min, max, mean, median, sum, count. You'd THINK that for that set up then stddev for error bars could do the stddev of all the rows with the same X. But no, it doesn't work like that - it is still series based. So you still need to turn each X-Y point into its own series.

    I fully agree with you. It would be nice if Sheets would have picked the brain of the excel folks and adapted their software to make this a one click feature. In the end it's not too bad for the kinds of graphs my students in grade 11 and 12 are working with but I'd have to have larger data sets and try to pull this off. -Thanks for the comment and thoughts on this.

    I have a scatter plot that I created error bars for and a trend line using standard error (error bar = 1SE) I am prompted to make a second graph with the same data copied into a new graph, but the only difference is that I am told to change the standard error units to 2. (error bar = 2SE). How do I do that in format options, or what does that mean? Thanks!

  • @PeterStanley
    @PeterStanley4 ай бұрын

    ±1 SD means you are keeping 68% of the data and clipping off the high and low ends evenly. ±2 SD means you are keeping roughly 95% of the data (your bars will be much larger). But I'm sorry to say I don't know why it's prompting you to do this. Hope you managed to solve it. Cheers

    I came across your video recently and have been using Planboard for a few months now and really like it. I am however still figuring out the best way to set up the classes. I teach three classes two subjects. The content of the classes runs parallel, with only minimal differences between them if one class needs a bit more time. Especially when it comes to Unit planning, those will be the same across the three classes. At the moment I have one class on Planboard set up per subject and class (example: English Class 1; English Class 2; English Class 3). Is it possible to have English as the subject and then add the different classes within the lessons somehow or would you recommend keeping it how I have it now...? Hope that made sense and thanks for any help/ideas/suggestions.

    Sorry for a late reply, you probably have a system for this now. But one idea that I'd recommend that has saved me a lot of time over the years is... when you finish making a lesson, click the 'share' icon in the upper right and store it in 'resources'. Make a naming structure for your lesson (1.1xxxxx, 1.2xxxxx) and add a simple tag (like: Bio or Math). Doing this saves all your lessons in one place so in future years you can access everything and quickly build a new course. This has been a life saver especially when I've move schools and haven't taught a course for a few years. Hope that helps.
