    It seems odd that you would use a base instead of a strong acid like hydrochloric acid to dissolve rock. Also you've got to be careful what metals you put in contact with either a strong acid or a strong base. For instance lye can completely destroy aluminum That's why you never want to put aluminum into the dishwasher as most dishwashing soaps contain sodium hydroxide. When doing things like this it's probably wiser to use glass, Pyrex or plastic

    What a waste. Most mineral Gold mixed specimens sell for the same price as pure Gold. You just lost money!

    Just so you know. Those gloves are rubber to stop cuts or puncture wounds. They are not chemical resistant. You need to buy the long red pvc gauntlets to be safe. Also an airfed mask or extraction is best to reduce inhalation as it is a very dangerous gas. Glasses/face shield are best to stop burns to the face.

    I'm with you mate, I wouldn't be suckin in those fumes personally. Nasty toxic stuff. I'd rather live longer and find more gold.

    I have a rare specimen with copper vein running over iron and iron running through rock. Is there any way to dissolve just the rock?

    Hydrochloric acid ought to do it. You need aqua regia to dissolve copper. It is highly effective at dissolving calcium carbonates though.

    caustic fumes are dangerous if you smell directly just like other dangerous reagent if you on open area then its no different than faint chlorine atleast it just corrosive property not like toxic n poisonous no2 from aqua regia

    Peter & Pete Clearly you don't know what natural gold looks like in its natural form I can tell you from personal experience as a gold claim owner that is most definitely a real gold nugget

    Just cover the stone with cloth and crush it with hammer. Simple

  • @Swingin_wit_Willy
    @Swingin_wit_Willy Жыл бұрын

    This then damages the nugget and will drop its value as it will no longer look as good, having a hammered flat spot... collectors don't like that. Less damage more profit.

    Please be very careful, molten sodium hydroxide is very dangerous! It can bubble and spray droplets around, which, in your eyes, can blind you almost instantly! They also cause severe thermal and chemical burns when they get on your Skin. Also, it's corrosive to almost everything, as far as I know even silver. I'm a hobby chemist myself but I always avoid dealing with molten alkali hydroxides.

    Hi What or How would you clean Charbon and like from ancient leafgold ?

  • @johnsheppard1476
    @johnsheppard14765 жыл бұрын

    There are two ways.One is molten sodium hydroxide WITHOUT adding water and NOT with torch but with simple electric stove,which does not burn your money like gas torch does,especially if you use it for hours like it's actually most oftenly required but anyway you got the point..But it's not the perfect way for me:yesterday I was soaking a section of honeycomb from catalitic converter in molten sodium hydroxide for about 5 hours but instead of having everything good and nice done I had to mess with the crap which ceramic turned into after the reaction and finally now I have an abnormal amount of weird sponge about 50 grams and it doesn't dissolve at all in God damn anything including aqua regia and even the notorious piranha solution made of 5% oleum(!!!),and 50% hydrogen peroxide which is fucking nuts!So why I used this way instead of my favourite one is because I fucking ran out of HF and also it as usual takes fucking eternity to get it delivered from company where I buy serious chemicals from!And yes,obviously this second method in comparison to the first one looks like seizing piece of meat from a hungry quarter tonne male lion in comparison to doing the same thing with a house cat but the same time surprisingly it's much more precise and actually vastly more comfortable way to dispose of ungodly ceramic shit!So I am really done with digging in this crap that remains of that damn honeycomb and presuming that none of PGMs got dissolved(as that particular section of the honeycomb is rhodium bearing one and unlike platinum that very slowly reacts with molten NaOH and palladium which reacts with any shit that is more fucking corrosive than baby oil,rhodium even in sponge form doesn't give a shit about molten sodium hydroxide even if it's heated to boiling point)and therefore I guess I will wait until that freaking HF will arrive and so I will soak all that undissolved poop into it with a sadistic smile on my face and presumably will watch it banging everything except rhodium that I am after this time!And the remaining 2 sections of the honeycomb from this cat and 6 more from 2 more cats will go to 3 separate batches with HF as well!* *-obviously there is nothing in these honeycombs that upon reaction with HF will make it capable of dissolving platinum metal so it will be really a good extraction,as simple as "toss 3 combs into HF and wait-decant HF in HF waste bucket&neutralise and rinse clear the sponge-smelt the sponge-be happy with results"!Palladium however as I said will be obviously vanquished and so everything will be dissolved in palladium batch but precipitating it with either copper powder or just zinc is not that hard to do..The only hard part is not to lose a freaking most of it to damn reaction with borax which it's likely to punch sodium out of it(obviously a sarcasm about palladium but you got the point.)..

    Please also wear a mask when using caustic soda, the fumes are extremely toxic. Face shield and chemical resistant gloves are a must... Rubber is not suitable.
