Yesterday's news of John's passing was sad but it is also a time to celebrate his work and encouragement that John gave to so many people..I first heard of John Mayall as a teen going through a huge Cream phase and I wanted to hear any and everything associated with them..i learnt Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce had played with John...I heard this masterpiece Broken Wings late at night 1979 on a local Australian FM station 3RMT which would later become 3RRR... It is a hauntingly beautiful, minimalist blues love song which i couldnt stop playing on my old cassette player....I would have the absolute pleasure of seeing John play at Richie's in Preston, Melbourne Australia in 1980..that cold Friday winter's night I took my World of John Mayall Decca LP cover to the show which he duly signed..Like John I can claim i've lived a full life..I've seen John Mayall play live and I am blessed to have done so.....Your wings may be broken this day..but rest assured John Mayall OBE You are in Blues Heaven..sipping a few quiet ones with Jimi, Jeff, Ginger,Jack, Alexis, Peter & Christine..VALE John Mayall...prayers to his family, friends & fans

The Checkers were originally from Yakima, Washington and featured an amazing young blind keyboard player, Mike Mandel, and equally amazing guitarist Larry Coryell...who went on to even more fame in Larry's jazz-fusion band: The Eleventh House.

I believe Rosalie was a record producer, or at least someone in the business. I love both the Bob Seger and the Thin Lizzy versions. I think Bob's original just edges it for me

Great song to have kick in as you enter the freeway late at night and there is almost nobody on the road and the ones that are are zipping along at 20 over the speed limit. Example - I once made it from south Orange County to an LAX adjacent parking lot in 45 minutes. I was doing 80+ in the slow lane, as most everyone else at 3:45 AM was doing 90 to 100 mph, including big pickups and SUVs.

Tune is taken from "Rock 'n Roll Music", by Chuck Berry. This is a pretty naked rip-off. Nevertheless, it was Number 19 on WLS radio on April 24, 1964 in Chicago--which might indicate how ignorant white midwestern radio programmers were in the mid-1960s. (Sorry, I was a WLS listener in that year but since I was only 8 year old and plenty ignorant myself, I could help much then.)

Spring '69 and two friends and I listen to this upbeat number before jumping in a car, exiting the dreary suburbs, and heading to "Rochdale College" in downtown Toronto, which was a notorious "hippie haven" at that time before city authorities shut it down. We had many fun times there mixing with the local counterculture! I'd be interested to know if any other Torontonians of that vintage remember it. FYI it's now a seniors' home which actually seems ironically appropriate.
