Florence Nightingale Foundation

Florence Nightingale Foundation

Providing inspiration and scholarships in Healthcare for the 21st Century.

The Florence Nightingale Foundation exists to support nurses and midwives with scholarships, mentoring and perhaps, most importantly, to give them some recognition they so richly deserve.

We raise vital funds to support this key group of clinical professionals enabling study at home and abroad, promoting innovation in practice, in addition to extending knowledge and skills to enable nurses and midwives to meet changing needs and improve patient care.

At the heart of our Foundation is the continuation of the work of Florence Nightingale who began equipping senior nurses and midwives with the confidence to represent their profession at the very top levels of our health system.

It really is a great book! It comprehensively describes various factors, dimensions, correlations and provides suggestions to combat the paralysing "what do you want me to do about it?"- effect. I bought it to prepare for my return to work in Community Substance Misuse services after a month of absence due to stress at work. It helped me tremendously to gather thoughts and articulate what is wrong. Colleagues with whom I shared it at work seemed to agree. However, there was no support to explore any of it in detail. "Interesting, is that what you think you have?" appears to sum up the support I received. Now, 6 months into further sickness absence for the same reasons, I maintain that it is no good to hit others over the head with the information or the book itself… ...so unfortunately, the best I can do is compose more presentations to try and express this again; it just does not appear to get me back into active employment. The anger and shame about the epistemic ignorance present very difficult to work through effectively alone. This limits my abilities to engage in my own activities of daily living properly and seems to keep me in the role of isolated sickness, away from productivity and active engagement, with a diminished sense of purpose, at the outskirts of society. What have I been doing for the 25 years as a qualified and registered nurse? I thought I had excellent communication skills and the ability to express complex matters with relative ease and clarity, and that I used this to plan and implement and evaluate and speak up…however, it looks like maybe that was not the case at all, because no one seems to respond well. At the same time, I also refuse to accept allegations that I would be attention seeking, unprofessional or intrinsically at fault, or lacking empathy or any of the other accusations and it appears, with that I am "turning away from my so called 'career'". My thanks to all of those who are recognised, not bullied, disputed and undermined for their hard work and continue working!
