Another option if you aren’t up to digging up the old sod by hand is to rent a sod-cutter. The things work great and leave a smooth bare surface of dirt. Places like Home Depot rent them by the day. I guess it depends on how big your lawn is as to what works best. I’m facing the task of redoing my front yard which used to be beautiful St. Augustine but was invaded by some weird grass which has pretty much taken over. Not sure what my plan is yet.

This guy is a colossal idiot! Not only is this thing not cheap but it is very hard to put up. Then he goes on digressions about things that have no relation to the topic at hand This is NOT a do it yourself kit. It's store bought, i.e., I don't need a video to do this. Bonus points for hitting his own irrigation hose! Lets go for a taking out the neighbors power line

I had St Augustine on my front lawn and developed tarr. Eventually, bermuda took over, and after mowing every 3 to 4 days, my lawn looks like a goft field now. To me, St. augustine is more suseptible to diseases and requires more water. I do have 90% St Augustine in the back lawn that grows well except has some non dying yellow blades in the same are every year while the rest is green. I applied a fungus control because if it's iron deficiency it would be the entire lawn that is deficient and not partially.

I’m sitting here watching my newly planted hydrangeas wilting in real time and it’s not even 90ish much. (Alabama here). I’ve never had to shade anything near my house. We get shade. These hydrangeas get only 4hr of sun a day….but they were 3 gal pots and pretty big already so they aren’t established yet and I’m scrambling. Right now I’m putting my garden chairs in front of them 😂. It’s working for the most part but if they don’t get some legs soon and harden off I’m in trouble July and August. I’ll need something. Ty for the tips.

I want Bermuda grass to take over so for years I cut it very low still the Saint Augustine moves in even though it covers the ground it just doesn’t look good lots of bare spots. I’d much prefer Bermuda.

Thanks. I have almost the same problem with our St. Augustine...thinking it may be root density primarily due to two mature live oaks less than 15 feet apart. Also my simplistic fertilizing with the blue miracle grow packets in the end-hose sprayer probably didn't do much to help.

This reminds me of the old saying, "Wisdom is learning from someone else's mistakes." Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I feel a bit wiser from watching your video 👩‍🎓. Those smaller elephant ears still look pretty good🐘. It's been a few years now, so hopefully, you have towering plants by now. I just bought a one foot high plant, so we have a loooong way to go! Happy plantings💚!

Can I get away with throwing st agustine sod cuts ontop of weeds and crab grass w existing st agustine and have it take over? I heard st agustine is a weed like grass that will crawl and take over lawns

You might consider getting a larger cover. That way, that exposed area will be covered, & so will you as you're out there working.

Thank you for your video. I made the big mistake of laying St Augustine SOD on preexisting St Augustine grass and I found out it will eventually kill the new SOD so now I am taking your word for it and I'll have to remove the SOD and get rid of the old grass and water the soil and lay my SOD back down.

Will the large bald area recover back if I keep watering and mowing it? The sprinkler system repair delay caused no watering for several months.

Thanks for this informative video. Regarding your tip about tree competition and yellowing I noticed that I've got areas of my lawn in the Coastal South where the St Augustine was a deeper green in late winter and then as both the St Augustine and the trees emerged from winter dormancy the new growth is coming in a little yellowish. This is also occurring in sections where I have Zoysia and Centipede (Heinze 57 lawn) The surrounding trees are all trying to flower and put out new foliage so I'm suspecting they are really competing with the grass right now for iron which also has a tendency to leach out pretty rapidly in our sandy soil. Time to put out some ironite!

wow. I yesterday put some in two buckets from my yard fro seeing your video, but I also tried the other way of just taking some(I ran out of space) , and put them in some top soil with starter fertilizer, and watered it in. I also had some runners near that area from my other grass so I spread little of that top soil near it as well. I will go water again maybe around 11(a few hours from now) to make sure they dont dry out, since I did this last evening.

Great video! Thank you. I’ve been doing this for years. Now I take my runners and pot them in 4” long by 2” cylinders (I use 2” pvc works perfectly) then when roots are well established I go out with the ole pro plugger and fill in thin areas or where weeds were previously treated.
