    I guess they kept them cheaper, although they are clearly setup for scuffs. However, I noticed that even the poli inners can be problematic if they are too tight and also depend on temperature and the material they're produced from

    Some facts if you care: There are 2 stereo mixes of Help! and Rubber because in 1987, George Martin heard the original 1965 mixes and didn't like them. This was the year that The Beatles were getting their premiere release on CD. Yes, EMI waited a long time since the 1982 debut of the Compact Disc. Martin called the original Stereo mixes 'wooly' and remixed them in '87 for their CD debut. The 2009 remixes stem from the '87 mixes, so the original '65 mixes have never been updated. They were just transferred to the Mono CDs. And for those who are interested, ALL CD's are stereo. So the Mono CDs is just the mono mix on each channel. 100% identical. Sgt. Pepper was when the Beatles actually started climbing the stairs to the control room and having more of a creative input on the mixes. For a month, The mono mix was worked on with ALL Beatles present whenever they were there. The Stereo mix was done in....a week? a few days? much shorter and only Ringo has confirmed to be present. The Stereo mix has very interesting choices (like removing the phase shifting effect on John's Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds vocal or the pitch being lowered in She's Leaving Home) but nonetheless weren't as much a Beatles creative input as the mono mix. Also, for the 2017 Giles Martin/Sam Okell remixed the album for it's 50th anniversary using the mono mix. That and the fact the Beatles were creatively involved with the mono mix tells me how definitive the mono mix is. Revolver objectively has different elements in each mix. John's "A LIFE OF EASE" line in Yellow Submarine is present in the mono mix, along with two acoustic guitar chords at the beginning, whereas the stereo mix has silence when Ringo sings "In the..." then music comes in at "town". There are different backwards guitar solos I think in I'm only sleeping and a different fadeout in Tomorrow Never Knows (one fadeout is longer so you hear more music) Paul's Automatic Double Tracking (ADT) error is fixed in the mono mix, but that mistake is present the first time he says Eleanor Rigby. All 4 of these albums were recorded on 4 track tape. Most of these songs feature Ringo's drums only on the left channel and different instruments specifically on one side of your speaker/ear. The stereo mixes are better. George Martin went independent from EMI in 1965, and I believe Rubber Soul was his first outing from that. Why he went back to the Rubber Soul stereo mix by HARD panning the instruments on the far left side and the vocals on the far right with SILENCE inbetween is beyond me. His 1987 mix rectified this a little, but you CAN'T listen to Rubber Soul in stereo. It's mono all the way (like Please Please Me and With The Beatles).

  • @BurgundySkies
    @BurgundySkies14 күн бұрын

    Yeah, I mention the alternate mixes for Rubber Soul and Help in later videos when I had both to compare. Well Rubber Soul is still pending. To be honest in headphones some of these mixes are jarring. In speakers at a certain distance they sound quite nice, but I have to say I slightly prefer the 2009 CDs to the original 87 ones, at least for some albums. Also tend to prefer some of the recent new mixes by Giles.

    @@BurgundySkies I'm not surprised. with a fresh new set of ears, George Martin put more dimension and fullness into those '87 mixes. Add the 2009 touch for the modern speaker set and bam! The best way for me to listen to The Night Before is the 2009 version!

  • @BurgundySkies
    @BurgundySkies13 күн бұрын

    This!!! You mention The Night Before, but it goes for almost any song, meaning if you put all versions of a song side by side, I doubt anyone would ever choose one year/version of the album/pressing/cd. You have songs that sound excellent on the 2009 remasters, some which sound pretty nice on the 87 cds, some which sound better in Mono, some in Stereo, some original mixes still stand, but Giles did an excellent job on some tracks and made more recent versions of albums the go-to for me (vinyl and CD). One one hand it's nice, multiple versions can sometimes mean different but still pleasant experiences. One the other hand... having to own "n" versions of an album just to get the best variations is a big frustrating.

  • @matthewhumcke3182
    @matthewhumcke318214 күн бұрын

    Great content, man. I've gone down a rabbit hole of this subject and would like to share some context. In the stereo booklets, the end section talks about how the album was recorded. Something to take from that are 3 numbers: 2, 4 and 8 When these were recorded to analogue tape in the 60's, these numbers represent the amount of tracks on the tape itself. Please Please Me and With The Beatles were recorded on 2 track tape: instruments wired to one track and the vocals to the next track. This left small room for overdubs (like handclaps, harmonicas and harmoniums added after the song was recorded) without risking sound degradation by recopying the tape to a new blank tape to free up space. Those first two albums were recorded like this to edit the vocals and instruments easier. It's intent was to make the mono mix the best it could be. The stereo release of Please Please Me was released MONTHS after the release date of said album (obviously mono), and George Martin had no clue they even released it! Stereo was an afterthought. As you basically said, kids had cheap record players with one speaker. Some of their dad's who were audiophiles had the stereo setup and were listening to classical music or jazz. Rock n' Roll was pretty much mono in the UK until the late 60's. The next two albums mark the most common tape used: 4 track. Much more room for overdubs. They put the voice in the center! an organ here on the left; a guitar solo here on the right. But the ONE reason I can't listen to the Beatles in stereo is because they didn't put the drums in the center like the vocals! Ringo is off to the left channel like a feature instrument rather the backbone of the song! This sounds strange in Paperback Writer, I Feel Fine (which ruins the vibe of that 60's af song) and countless others (Sgt. Pepper!) This may not bother all. I researched the recording history of the first 9 albums. George Martin and engineers (Norman Smith and later Geoff Emerick) would start to put in effort with stereo (in my opinion around Beatles For Sale). Some of the mixes felt rushed; others were solid. In my research, mono was usually FIRST to be mixed and was the thing that got finished or remixed first. The only time stereo took precedent was for obligations outside of the album (like United Artists needing mixes for the movie and American soundtrack). Producers will even tell you today you want to focus on mono before you dip into stereo; to get it down perfectly balanced. And I feel that's part of George Martin's goal (along with the familiarity with UK rock n' roll being a mono dominated genre). Stereo mixes of A Hard Day's Night and Beatles For Sale are good. A Hard Day's Night has warts (like John's misaligned double track intro on 'If I Fell' and Paul's squeaky voice at the last '...was in vain,') but for the fan that doesn't care, or the fan who can get over RINGO not being panned into the center (drums on only the left track, that's insanity), then you can get away with the stereo. But if anyone is still reading, thank you first of all. But also, The Beatles, their producer and engineers were mono focused for a very long time. Their self titled album ("The White Album") is where it gets complicated. But if you can pick up the mono CDs, even just to burn them, do it. They were meant to be in mono. The artists wanted their finished product to be what mono sounded like. Stereo was in its mainstream infancy in the UK and sometimes was an after thought. I like to think it was split in pieces and spread around the stereo soundscape. It doesn't blend, and it's music chunks in corners and some elements in the middle. It's rough. The Beatles mono mixes sound like a band together in the same room, balanced and engineered to give you the impression it's one coherent song. The mono mix just sounds normal and full.....altogether; the stereo sound pulled apart with not enough panning or reverb to make it sound like one collective song. edit: spelling and addition of 'full....." at the end.

    Thank you for this. Additional context and info will always be welcomed, if not always for me, at least for other people visiting. I became familiar in the past couple of years with all the elements that shaped the original mixes, and this demix tech that has been out for the past two years should allow for stronger stereo mixes. Of course, given that any mix is a personal thing for the engineer/producer, and the fact that anyone can make mistakes, there will always be results that do not please everyone (see the new mix of Magical Mystery Tour from the 2023 Blue album). But, at least for Stereo, some of these were sorely needed.

    @@BurgundySkies Good point: some Beatles could use a stereo refresh for a full sounding, wide stereo image. That Magically Mystery Tour remix is likely a cut and paste job from the MMT box set that came out in I think 2012. Unless they tinkered with it recently, most 2023 Blue album tracks are a cut and paste of the Giles Martin/Sam Okell anniversary editions. I've never heard the MMT box set (it contains a replica double EP as one of its goodies) so im curious.

    “Obviously vinyl has become the preferred way for audiophiles to collect and listen to music” err… no it hasn’t? Vinyl collecting and being an audiophile are two entirely separate and usually mutually exclusive hobbies unless you are very wealthy. No analogue system below £2000 sounds vaguely acceptable to an audiophile and the vast majority of records in existence are either in poor condition, or poor quality pressings, or cut from poor sources. You’d probably be hitting an average of £60 per album if you were seeking out good sounding records. If you want a decent sized collection of, say, 500 albums you really like, that’s £30000. And you’d better be taking out insurance on that. So no, most audiophiles are not vinyl collectors, or if they are, they’re probably under the influence of some serious doublethink. CDs still outsell vinyl by volume in most parts of the world and I’d wager a higher percentage of CD buyers are discerning about sound quality than vinyl buyers, who are very clearly happy with overpriced noisy junk off of Amazon.

  • @BurgundySkies
    @BurgundySkies29 күн бұрын

    I mean I will not dispute that, but what I can say is that at least in the audiophile centric forums I visited, most people were talking about turntables, styli and the best pressings. I guess it also depends on the music itself. There are those who might own master tapes or copies of master tapes of certain albums, and depending on their setup that might be the best way to listen to those albums. On the other hand it seemed to me like it's an accepted thing among a lot of music collectors that they prefer (at least music from the 50s, 60s, 70s) on vinyl rather than CD. Not the case for me. Even if since I recorded this, I did build up a small vinyl collection as well, I still feel like many of my CDs sound better than their vinyl counterparts.

    In your commentary, you referred to the “Help” Album as a studio album whereas here in the USA we consider both the UK and the USA releases as movie or film soundtracks; especially with the George Martin orchestral music arrangements on side two. This is also true of “Hard Day’s Night” and Yellow Submarine” for the same reason. “Magical Mystery Tour” is either considered a soundtrack as released here in the USA or a compilation. “Let It Be” is either a studio album or a soundtrack since it’s essentially derived from a film documentary. This is in reference to the original releases not necessarily to later CD versions, remixes, remasters, etcetera.

  • @francoalvear2010
    @francoalvear20102 ай бұрын

    The Beatles released this as an album. They didn't considered it as a soundtrack, so, you cannot find that word in the artwork. It's an album. In the USA, Capitol butchered the original UK releases and made those "soundtracks". Cash grab.

  • @BurgundySkies
    @BurgundySkies2 ай бұрын

    I guess it depends on how people came in contact with this for the first time. It is somewhat natural for certain countries to have this perspective when the record was released with only music present in the film, was advertised as such and was linked closely to the film release. I think it's more visible with AHDN. Certain songs on Help! were written for the movie at least to a certain extent. But the recording and inclusion of Yesterday and a couple of other tracks make the UK album stand on its own, and in my opinion quite independent from the movie. It is a reality that the construction of the batch of US albums up until Sgt Pepper was partially resulted from Capitol's insistent need to re-arrange the releases as they thought woulf get them more sales, from the technical angle of limiting the no. of tracks on an album to limit the royalties, the involvement of United Artists who owned distribution of just the music included in the films and had nothing to do with the band's idea of an album. This was made very clear once they had enough leverage to force Capitol to release what they wanted the way they wanted.

  • @BurgundySkies
    @BurgundySkies2 ай бұрын

    Accurate. But not simply a cash grab, it was also forced by the movie release rights for the US. Although anyway, it would be a couple more years until The Beatles had enough pull to force proper album releases in the US. The UK Help was largely seen as their 5th studio album, with some of the songs being in the movie as well.

    I saw Let It Be in the theaters in 1970 as a thirteen year old. At that age I absolutely loved it, did not care about how it was edited and that there was not much of a story just loved seeing the Beatles in the studio. Fast forward to now and I love that the picture quality and sound are greatly improved and that is now available to watch. Like you I think the Get Back series will be the go to for that period in the Beatles lives. I love how everything was explained and went day by day. So glad we are still getting Beatle product after all these years. Take care!

    It is true, and the slight change in mood really predicts some of their later work. But even the covers, to me they sound kinda neat. And the most important thing is these are songs they enjoyed performing, and you can feel the passion.

    I will never understand this album's relative lack of popularity. To me, the Beatles' early days were when they were still performing together as a group, and no matter how much they grew and progressed as songwriters and recording artists, those early days was when they were on FIRE! Simply by playing live together, they created the kind of magic that just isn't possible when you record each instrument separately over many months. Is With the Beatles their best album? No, clearly not. That honour goes to Abbey Road. But it's perhaps the one album I return to the most, and it also includes what is perhaps my favourite Beatles song of them all, "It Won't Be Long". In this day and age, people seem to be obsessed with being offended by a song like "Little Child" and the fact that there are so many covers on the album. But "Little Child" wasn't offensive at the time it was written. Nor should it be today. And the covers, well, they're for the most part equal to, if not greater than the original versions, so I don't have a problem with them. Overall, this is a great album from a time when the Beatles were still excited about what they were doing and where they were going. And you can hear it!

  • @BurgundySkies
    @BurgundySkies4 ай бұрын

    I think songs like Little Child, I saw her standing there and Run for your life get a bad rep partially because they apparently refer to teenage girls. I think the "little girl/child" appelative is akin to the appelative "baby" when referring to lovers, which was also popularised by rock n roll. I saw her standing there is more explicit with regard to age indeed and Run for your life can be interpreted to be kinda sexist if you think about it, and especially knowing John's sometimes abusive relationship with women. I do think the lyrics are not to be taken ad literam, and aside from being put in the historical context, they're also purposefuly exaggerated. Anyway, I have to admit that at this moment, although I do love some songs on it, although I have 0 problems with covers from this and other early albums (in fact 3-4 of my top 20-30 songs of theirs might be covers), and although I do get how major and iconic this album was, it's probably my 2nd least prefered album, in terms of number of songs on it that I really love. I so love half of them, but on most other albums it's usually more than 7 I would add to any compilation. Except for this one and Yellow Submarine. When it comes to recording and playing together yes, this and the first 4-6 albums were the pinnacle of enjoyment for them, and in the 1st 3-4 of them the joy of playing their own originals and all those covers they loved, exudes from almost every track.

    @@BurgundySkies Then we are in agreement, apart from how we rank this album next to the rest of the band's discography. As for "Little Child", considering that the boys were playing to mostly screaming teenage girls, and probably felt a lot older than them, being in their 20s and all (!), not to mention Lennon's disdain for anyone who came to their show with the intention of screaming rather than listening, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the song was at least partly written as a response to the early stages of Beatlemania... "Run for Your Life" is more difficult to defend. Lennon himself disliked it, of course, so there's that. But the fact remains that he borrowed much of the lyric from a different song, which I don't recall the name of. I believe Elvis sang it. And he did like Elvis! When I listen to it, I don't hear sexism so much as male insecurity. It's basically Incel-behaviour. Very toxic and very possessive. But it's also just a song, and there's every possibility that Lennon was singing as the protagonist of the lyric, and not as himself. Sometimes it's important to separate the artist from the art, you know?

  • @BurgundySkies
    @BurgundySkies4 ай бұрын

    Even if he was singing as himself, different times, different background and he was at an age where people often do and say stupit sh*t. Thankfully he seemed to have outgrown that incel-ism 😁 short time after. I still like the song though. Not because of the lyrics but rather in spite of them. When I was a kid I never took them too serious tbh, I mean... "hide your head in the sand"? Clearly not meant to be taken literally.

    @@BurgundySkies Sorry for the late reply. Had to run off yesterday. Anyway, yes, I think it's important to remember how young the Beatles were, even at the end of their career. I still have my diaries from when I was 25, and reading through them is like reading the words of a complete stranger! Of course, I didn't publish those diaries, so I don't have to be judged for them, but still, there are a lot of MUCH worse songs out there. I mean, I find it hilarious that people should be offended by "Run for Your Life" when your average Cannibal Corpse song is a billion times more shocking. But then again, I suppose the Beatles had a cleaner image to uphold! 😂 Thanks for chatting, by the way. I appreciate you taking the time. Oh, and I enjoyed the video. I was half-expecting a surprise twist with you suddenly declaring the Russian bootleg the superior version! That would've been a shock!

    Hi 👋,I'm from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺 ,the original Australian released issue of "With The Beatles" was for many years released on an alternative picture cover than the U.K issue cos EMI in Australia couldn't really reproduce the U.K picture properly due to the poor quality of the original black & white exposure of the 4 half exposed faces of the band members on the U.K cover picture although the story goes that EMI Australia had a weird union rule not to do it? (it was a similar scenario with the original Australian issue of "Beatles For Sale" by also switching to an alternative cover!), by 1982 EMI Australia was finally able to reproduce & reissue "With The Beatles" on the U.K cover picture.

    Thanks a lot for this great video. I really enjoy it. I read in the comments, that someone complained about that your channel is just another Beatles channel. I am grateful for this! you do very well researched videos with an extremely high knowledge of the stuff you are talking. I really appreciate your thorough deep dives.So, please carry on with that! Now to Please Please Me: I fully agree that the 70th German pressing with -2/-2 matrix sounds best. But I also love the 2012 stereo remasters on vinyl. Its bad reputation is unjustified in my opinion. Inspired by your video, I compared my 2009 mono CD with the 1988 digitally sources LP version (never got the CD). Very similar to your experience, there is hardly any difference to hear. I think, the bad reputation, the early 1987 Beatles CDs and LPs have, is quite unfair. At my system (not an audiophile system, but a good HiFi) they do sound great... I guess, fans had been very disappointed when these albums had been released in mono only,.at least here in HiFi-loving Germany. Currently I am spinning my 1986 UK pressing (-4/-4 matrix). Not bad either, but the german HörZu respectively the Apple versions has a little bit more of the magic. BR from Munich and I am looking forward for the next episode.

    Thank you very much for being here and for the kind words. As a person following several YT channels myself (beyond music or The Beatles), I know nowadays we have our pick of content so I am always happy when someone chooses to check out any of these videos. Regarding The Beatles I do not plan on stopping, I am too linked to their music to do that, but I do want (and always intended) to cover other stuff as well. Back to the music, all in all it seems to me more and more that digital remasters can sometimes be on par with the original analogue ones, at least when it comes to what my ears can perceive. I do agree that when someone takes an original master tape to make a digital remaster, and they start playing around with eq and other settings, and pumping up volume artificially, you can get some bad results. Same goes for new mixes (see a couple of the mistakes they made on a few songs in the new Red and Blue). In the end that can happen to vinyl pressings as well, it's not the medium we should blame. But beyond that... I find that I am enjoying my CDs at least as much as vinyl. Related to what you said about the 87-88 CDs and Vinyl being unappreciated at the time, you might be right. In the end there were three things that surely influenced that: how people's ears were used to listen to music (vinyl, tapes etc), what they expected and had built up as expectation on how CDs will sound and last but not least the level of tech and expertise people had at that time transferring music to digital (vs today). Danke!

    Wondering if your channel is just another Beatles channel??KZread is filled with thousands of Beatles channels all showing and talking about the same thing It makes it harder to branch out and get more views doesn’t it???

  • @BurgundySkies
    @BurgundySkies4 ай бұрын

    Yeah, tbh it was not intended to be a 100% focused Beatles channel. It still is not. It's more about things I was/am passionate about. It just started with the Beatles, and I had so many things lined up while I was progressing with collecting items, that I'm kinda sticking with it for a while. Regarding Beatles channels, I would not say there are thousands, or at least not that I am aware of, there definitely some which are like 90% Beatles focused, but I saw more that are just like a mix related mostly to music. Anyway, I did not necessarily want to mirror any other channel, as my perspective is not one of a semi-rich person collecting this stuff for decades, it's rather of a new collector or specialist, just a layman, hopefully also encouraging other people who cannot afford or don't have the time to buy and own and listen to every single possible pressing or version. In the idea that there are more people like me out there ofc. About branching out: you are 100% correct. I am only learning this whole "youtube" thing, and being quite late at this party as well, I can say that the current state of facts pushes new people into choosing very specific niches and sticking with them. Not sure where the future will take me, but what I am sure of is that I don't want to just be chasing trends. I would love to do videos about films and series, about games as well, but time is also very tight, and so (for now) I need to make choices. But one thing I can say is that after starting something like this, with an apparent focus point for the first few months, branching out does not mean views, often it means the opposite.
