I love this movie. Watch it very year. I'm from Brabant and I find it funny how they call my home "hell" troughout the movie. The Dutch accent is also cartoonishly evil. Nobody talked like that: Dutch during the time was actually rather warm and soft spoken, the way they still speak in the south. The north has developed a harsher tongue, with a harsher G sound, which was not spoken at all during the period. I think these are actors are from the north, probably Amsterdam, and were being told to sound like evil calvinists. The 80 years war was absolutely brutal from all perspectives. It birthed a nation but it was far from united during that time. Factions were all around, and it can be best compared to the Syrian civil war. Spanish troops coming over here, being stations in Flanders and Holland had absolutely no clue wtf they were getting into. Most of the Spanish troops were mercenaries from Germany or Italy, or Spanish romantics from the underclasses. A Dutch professor translated many diaries of Spanish soldiers ("De Spaanse Kronieken" aka "The Spanish Chronicles") and it's funny to read how they felt about us Brabanders - being rowdy, agressive drinkers and finding excuses for a party every single day. We certainly have changed very little.
You shouldn't trust modern Russian historical films. A monarchy is being built in Russia and therefore the propaganda machine, including cinema, loaded with huge amounts of money, educates Russian subjects to kneel before their masters.
