'Flow' can be interrupted, or disrupted. To get into 'Flow' takes time, it is not instantaneous, starting a new task, a new job, learning a new skill, all take time. Indeed at work, if you are new to the company, to get into 'Flow' could possibly take months.

Video Games. as a kid, I could play the video game 16hrs at a time. very few brakes. What brought me here is that I want to find my flow as an adult. I'm 29, I have a few things that will challenge me now, I guess I'm gearing up & using this information as a tool to help me get through these next few challenges. thanks, I have a new outlook on life now.

Flow is incredibly important when interacting with children. I propose they are anxious when we are not present. They sense intuitively our presence.

Flow, as defined by M. Csikszentmalyi,, defined flow as the result of a matching of skill and challenge. This corresponds to a slight moment to moment uncertainty in achieving a desired goal, and this always corresponds to the release of the neuro-modulator dopamine. The release of the neuro-modulator dopamine occurs when an individual experiences or anticipates the perception of positive unpredicted events. Dopamine fixes attention, stimulates learning, and is subjectively felt as a feeling of energy, arousal, timelessness, but not ironically of pleasure. Dopamine also scales with the importance of a goal, so a lot more dopamine is released if your goal is important, explaining the ecstasy reported by those who engage in dangerous tasks (e.g.rock climbers, extreme sports). Dopamine increases the momentary value or decision utility of behavior. If that moment to moment behavior conforms to its predicted utility or ending value, this attentive focus will be correlated with a state of relaxation that in turn elicits the release of endogenous opioids that are reflected in a feeling of pleasure. (For example, a creative artist working on a painting may feel energized and pleasurable in his activity) On the other hand, if the dopamine induced change in the decision utility of behavior is not coherent with the future or predicted utility of behavior, as in distraction due to novel but useless alternatives (e.g. accessing social media while on the job), then neuro-muscular activation or muscular attention will occur and result in pain, opioid release will stop, and the individual will report a subject state of unhappiness. Prediction: the behavior of keeping focused on task is the primary independent measure for happiness. Proof: Simply poll people randomly during that the course of their days, and those who are focused will feel happy and content, and those who are distracted will feel unhappy and discontented. This is exactly what the psychologist Matt Killingsworth did with over 15000 subjects who were polled randomly during various moments of their days. His discussion of his results are in the TED talk below. www.ted.com/talks/matt_killingsworth_want_to_be_happier_stay_in_the_moment?language=en And my longer explanation here. www.scribd.com/doc/284056765/The-Book-of-Rest-The-Odd-Psychology-of-Doing-Nothing

AJ Marr hey very nice description, thanks. You didn't explain, what happens when the challenge is high and the skills is just a little short - so the person is in 'Arousal' state as explained by Dr. Mihaly & how to go to the state of 'Flow' from there?

Thanks for the Video! Sorry for the intrusion, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you ever tried - Marnaavid Unexplainable Intervention (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a great one of a kind guide for learning how to hack your flow state minus the normal expense. Ive heard some great things about it and my best friend Jordan at last got cool results with it.

That similar state is common enough in my computer programming world that we usually look for it before speaking to one another so as not to needlessly disrupt it.

Is flow in any way related to depersonalization or derealization? I experienced both during my first flow experience during my martial arts participation, and later in my musical endeavors. Subjectively, there is the rather paradoxical feeling of being both present and absent, connected and detached. I wonder if this is so for others, or is related to my personality pathologies (schizoid with subclinical schizotypal traits)

Artists and musicians know and experience the state of flow. The flow experience can be applied to anything you want to achieve in life. Being in the state of flow enables the experience of total involvement in what we enjoy doing, whilst being creative to develop something that has meaning. FLOW is an art itself.

A great description of FLOW 1:26-3:32. Flow is described as being completely carried away almost like being in a river and the flow of the river takes them on. Flow happens in Arts, Sports, Music and every time a person is really involved in what they are doing. They have very focused, and very clear goals. Thumbs up if the movie "HAPPY" brought you here.
