These Things Make Noises

These Things Make Noises

Hi, I'm Dan. Welcome to 'These Things Make Noises'. This channel is a place to share my favourite six string gear, sounds and all things that make noises.

I've spent the last decade playing guitar in what could be described as a heavy indie/alternative, shoe-gazey band (excuse the pretentious pigeon holing, it's necessary I promise).

I'm not promising to be the best player in the world... I mean i'm not even the best guitarist in my own band! But what I lack in technical ability, I make up for in knowing how to get the damn thing I'm hearing in my head out into the speakers!

So, expect cool sounds, barely adequate riffs and terrible jokes.

But most of all expect all things that make noises. x

* I am now offering 1-1 Consultations for any guitar tone/recording/production/songwriting things you might need help with. It's an introductory offer of £50 but will go up in the new year! calendly.com/thesethingsmakenoises/consultation

I think alternative tunings force you to understand chords because you can more easily experiment and improvise. DADDAD is another interesting one, which has lots of D's across the octave as a power chord. and picking a base of D and D on two octaves while doing almost anything you want on the three treble strings, but it is very simple to walk through major and minor chords such as Em, F#m, G, A, Dm, C#dim with only three shapes on those 3 strings. and maybe you won't use the diminished chord at all.

I looked up the DS-1 on KZread 2 days ago for information about it and have been inundated by posts about it ever since. It seems to me it’s more metal crunchy than the Rat which sounds compressed & muffled.

Is that a Mustang Pawn Shop Special you’re playing for “Where is my mind?” I have one in Lake Placid Blue. Love it.

For it work really well crank the amp as far as it could go but even then its just gets you a overdriven type sound nothing in distortion territory

The DS-1 has a fizz on the top end I don't like. The Rat feels somehow harsh and smooth which is perfect to my ears

Loved this video.i grew up listening to this genre. It’s funny, I remember as a 15 year old kid bringing loose change in an old sock to the record shop when heaven up here came out to buy it. It and Joy division closer shaped my musical path. Now in my late 50’s I’m learning guitar. Good times👍

When I doubled up with clean live, I would by-pass most of the board (dirt and some other mods) at the tuner, but came back in on the right of my stereo delay, reverb (the second one haha) and loop for a stereo output, if that makes sense. I had the by-passed "clean" going through a VOX AC30 and the dirt through a Fender Twin Reverb, but both those amps had multiple inputs, so definitely didn't need two amps! I was also the only guitarist, so had to do what I could!

I use the DS-1 just because I like how it blends in with other pedals. RAT does it well too but it’s honestly personal preference for me. Also in my country DS-1 is everywhere and a fuck ton cheaper lol.

the way Kurt played power chords was by using his index and ring finger, which would bar the strings and create the sus2 sound

I love the SP's. Everyone back in the day just went into 'cobain 'poularity'' yeah you had the real fans, but also a lot of sheepers. But looking back. IT WAS COOL! Glam rock fading, pop fucked!, many bands mixed lots of shit and made their own 'sound'. We were all 'One', like borg. Faith no more were amazing way back. That is the last of solidarity and true brotherhood I ever knew dude!

I got a few pedals, but haven't a clue how to utelise them properly. 48 now; my dream has long gone. But still appreciate these vids. Even though waaaaaaay pumpkins biased lol. Keep rockin dude!
