Hi, I'm Dan. Welcome to 'These Things Make Noises'. This channel is a place to share my favourite six string gear, sounds and all things that make noises.
I've spent the last decade playing guitar in what could be described as a heavy indie/alternative, shoe-gazey band (excuse the pretentious pigeon holing, it's necessary I promise).
I'm not promising to be the best player in the world... I mean i'm not even the best guitarist in my own band! But what I lack in technical ability, I make up for in knowing how to get the damn thing I'm hearing in my head out into the speakers!
So, expect cool sounds, barely adequate riffs and terrible jokes.
But most of all expect all things that make noises. x

I think alternative tunings force you to understand chords because you can more easily experiment and improvise. DADDAD is another interesting one, which has lots of D's across the octave as a power chord. and picking a base of D and D on two octaves while doing almost anything you want on the three treble strings, but it is very simple to walk through major and minor chords such as Em, F#m, G, A, Dm, C#dim with only three shapes on those 3 strings. and maybe you won't use the diminished chord at all.
Just subscribed because of this video!
AIC, G'nR, Weezer also use this this tuning.
Oh mate! You’re going down the 80s rack rabbit hole! I must say this is a trip with no guaranteed way back. You’ve been warned. 😛😛😛😛
This is just awesome to understand this finally
Rat and You Dirty Rat varient, plus DS-2 in Turbo mode. All "middly", all great!
I looked up the DS-1 on KZread 2 days ago for information about it and have been inundated by posts about it ever since. It seems to me it’s more metal crunchy than the Rat which sounds compressed & muffled.
Is that a Mustang Pawn Shop Special you’re playing for “Where is my mind?” I have one in Lake Placid Blue. Love it.
For it work really well crank the amp as far as it could go but even then its just gets you a overdriven type sound nothing in distortion territory
The DS-1 has a fizz on the top end I don't like. The Rat feels somehow harsh and smooth which is perfect to my ears
Jag-you-uh
Still prefer proco rat
Awesome video man. I have that same SP tattoo in the same place but mine says LOVE IS SUICIDE underneath
I just started playing guitar again because of the pumpkins
The rat sounds like early teenage fanclub. The ds1 is pure nirvana
I only have 4 pedals And these two make up half My collection!!! Both are whoppers 🤟
I think you might be smelling the pedal instead of listening to it
what song is that?
Bro read that right off of google
Loved this video.i grew up listening to this genre. It’s funny, I remember as a 15 year old kid bringing loose change in an old sock to the record shop when heaven up here came out to buy it. It and Joy division closer shaped my musical path. Now in my late 50’s I’m learning guitar. Good times👍
Nice strat! What was the original colour?
Kevin Shields would laugh at the idea of getting rid of pedals lol
I just started listening to your band October Drift, they are very good!
DS-2 is better imo for the two switches you can get a harsher tone
The big muff pi op amp was my first ever pedal
I use something similar to the Diago, it’s a case for a dj controller which I stuck Velcro tape all in the inside and it does the job well
When I doubled up with clean live, I would by-pass most of the board (dirt and some other mods) at the tuner, but came back in on the right of my stereo delay, reverb (the second one haha) and loop for a stereo output, if that makes sense. I had the by-passed "clean" going through a VOX AC30 and the dirt through a Fender Twin Reverb, but both those amps had multiple inputs, so definitely didn't need two amps! I was also the only guitarist, so had to do what I could!
Boy.. I need some air.
Double track your rhythm part with Rat track panned one way and DS1 panned the other. Will combine for massive stereo sound!!
I use the DS-1 just because I like how it blends in with other pedals. RAT does it well too but it’s honestly personal preference for me. Also in my country DS-1 is everywhere and a fuck ton cheaper lol.
Not reverbs. Often dry with layers, cosmic layers of distortions.
RAT!
Blue sky is freakin fire
Thank you for show these progressions, as a 51 year old metal head and one who love every track off Siamese dreams. Mayonnaise has always had a hold on me and one of my favs as well!
o DS1 fica melhor usando no canal com um pouco de ganho, daí fica sensacional...
These are good for Hendrix/Eddie Hazel type tone right?
Amazing video, keep up with nice post-punk stuff, you rock!
the way Kurt played power chords was by using his index and ring finger, which would bar the strings and create the sus2 sound
RAT all the way!
Love the vid! What’s the guitar on the thumbnail? Its beautiful
It ROCKS dude!
Your major and minor stretches hurt, any alternatives. I hate it when youtubers go fracking pro! I got RA, help mne out dude!
I love the SP's. Everyone back in the day just went into 'cobain 'poularity'' yeah you had the real fans, but also a lot of sheepers. But looking back. IT WAS COOL! Glam rock fading, pop fucked!, many bands mixed lots of shit and made their own 'sound'. We were all 'One', like borg. Faith no more were amazing way back. That is the last of solidarity and true brotherhood I ever knew dude!
I am wondering if you are a bit....hmmmmmmmm........'Pumpkins Biased' lol. Way too much Corgan, but hey, I like 'em. Me I'm pearl Jam. Love that early sound and the Neil young mirrorball stuff. I got a few pedals, but haven't a clue how to utelise them properly. 48 now; my dream has long gone. But still appreciate these vids. Even though waaaaaaay pumpkins biased lol. Keep rockin dude!
Jesus Dude, your chords are so fracking hard. CRAMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I have arthritis, so i struggle with complex chords and the 'press' and 'slide'/'switch' interchange (if that makes sense). but cool vid dude
I'd be curious to hear if you have any experience getting these sounds but through using plugins in a DAW rather than pedals etc?
DS1 on bass forever
DS1 is a bit more glassy. I think I prefer the rat
