    It's great how European wargame magazines actually do game reviews (VaeVictis, ParaBellum, Battles), its a shame none of the English language magazines really take this approach and that I don't ready other languages :( Doing a great job with the channel at the moment, I can barely keep up 😅

    I played this a few times several years ago and mostly enjoyed it. As you note, it has some unique and innovative design elements, particularly the seven hex system. I quite liked the activation system too, but I found combat resolution to be unnecessarily complex. Looking forward to the next instalment!

    I was in doubt whether to buy this game when it came out, but in the end decided against it, partly because the description on the site was very vague (in terms of rules, mechanisms and soloability), partly because of the “obscurity” of the system (compared to JdG). Thank you for confirming my suspicions…

    Thanks for this video. Interesting emphases in game design here, as if the neglected or grey areas in the rules indicate what the designer believes to be less crucial than other matters, such as command-and-control and changes in formation, which are covered in detail. It's good that these battles are not depicted generically and seem to reflect the designer's take on this level of military engagement. One wonders, but it's all grounds for discussion. I truly appreciate your approach to these games and how you balance your commentary. Thanks again.

    I’m glad to see someone putting videos out on the linear warfare tactical games-especially as you are going from one to the next while they’re all fresh in your mind. I’m not going to object to the ease of close combat in this game (though I won’t speak to others in the series). First, I would point out that this is taking place 40 years earlier than Piacenza. Most line infantry units are still 10-15% pikemen at the start of the War of Spanish Succession. Armies and their wings are also led by officers who must have commanded infantry units that were even more heavily pike/melee centric. Second, the hexes are supposed to represent a fairly large area. Did the designer’s notes suggest the assault represented hand-to-hand combat, or just intensified combat at closer range?

  • @Justegarde
    @Justegarde9 күн бұрын

    There were no design notes, unfortunately. The designer makes clear in the rules the difference between shot (fire) combat and shock combat. And that a unit can forego their fire combat to proceed directly to shock only if they pass a morale test. To me that implies close (hand-to-hand) melee. With regards to your pike comment: good to know. If they are modeled in this game, it is abstractly, as there is no tactical unit designation for pikes.

  • @user-fg4br6ck6p
    @user-fg4br6ck6p9 күн бұрын

    The pikes were not distinct units. There was usually a small block of them in the center of line infantry units. Imagine the pike and shot units of the Thirty Years War, but with the pikes greatly reduced and the “sleeves” of musketeers substantially increased.

  • @Justegarde
    @Justegarde9 күн бұрын

    I would very much like to, but the rules were released in such a state that I don't feel comfortable doing a playthrough until they are revised, and unfortunately it appears as though the designer(s) have left the developer out to dry in terms of supporting the game's players. So eventually, yes.

    Thanks for this video and your sense of the value of the magazine and the game. Extraordinary graphics in the game, very attractive. Some publishers would do well to study this work, as well as the simplification of the game design (though an advanced rules option might also work well).

    We are trying to play this scenario but cannot figure out when the Supply and LOC situation is checked ...there is nothing in the Rules (???)

  • @Justegarde
    @Justegarde13 күн бұрын

    @@romiloszachariadis2334 For the most part it’s checked at the beginning of movement (and during the monthly social turn; see rule 3-12 a, b, and c in the game specific rules). Also see rule sections 12-9 through 12-24 (especially 12-21) which would indicate that you need to check supply any time new depots or river heads are placed. It’s not described super well, but if there’s any timing issues I would say just do it at the start of every British turn, whereby supplied and unsupplied units remain in that state until the next British turn. I don’t really like the awkwardness of the supply rules in this theater, if I’m honest. Very clunky.

    Great video. These games are nearly impossible to find for the most part and while I’m looking I would love to use Vassal to learn the system. There is a website which has a ton of info on these games which is helpful. But, are there specifics for reinforcement entry and schedule of reinforcements in the individual games that are needed which aren’t on the vassal modues NOR on the website? The site has scenario specific rules for most of the games, but I feel like there is still information missing to make the games playable on Vassal w/o the physical battle specific physical copies. Thoughts on this? I’d really like to be able to get into these games, and I would gladly buy every one of them I could find IF they were actually for sale anywhere!!!! (I have been able to order Waterloo/Ligny/3 days of glory/first glories/lutzen/bautzen…but there are a ton of others that just are nowhere to be found, like Aspern-Essling/Hanau/etc which I would really like to play on Vassal)
