OMG... this is soo unrealistic. The rescue swimmer should have a mask and snorkel on, not his non-water proof $4k helmet! If the sea state was worse, he'd need to place his head under the water to ensure the rescue harness is secured properly.

Not very unrealistic if it is real ;-)... The helmet is waterproof and we were never considered to be 'Rescue Swimmers'. The RAF SAR Force had Winch Operators and Winchmen. In a rough sea (water rescue) the Winchman remained attached to the winch wire throughout and the WinchOp would 'voice marshal' the highly skilled pilot to remain in position. With our training, techniques and experience it was not necessary to put your head in the water for a look but if required we could recover the casualty a few feet above the Winchman in order to clear entanlements. I hope this explanation helps to alay your concerns Hira?

The company taking over SAR in the UK is Bristow helicopters. They have recruited registered paramedics, preferably with some form of mountain rescue experience so that may well be an avenue you could look into if it is specifically SAR rather than a helicopter crewman which interests you.

Hi, Sadly the military are in the process of handing over SAR to the Department of Transport. There is no longer a Winchman career to follow in the military. We still do training for all military helicopter crews as it will always be a secondary role as almost every military helicopter has a winch fitted. Apply through your local careers office as a helicopter crewman in either the RAF or the Navy and we will see you soon for this training.

I was Just wondering how does one become a winch man or get into winch man Training. IS there something particular you need and what do you go through to get there for example do you join the RAF.

Hi there. Sorry I didn't respond but I am away from home at the moment and having IT issues. Replying via my phone so forgive the curt nature of my replies. I used a padded and waterproof camera case. I think it was a Lowe Alpine one. Looks like a standard waterproof pouch inside a padded camera case but with the important addition of a medium sized silica gel sachet. This dries the camera between photos and helps prevent steaming up. Good luck and enjoy the trip. James

It does seem to keep going behind, but according to the SkySails website it is all computer controlled so I guess it knows what it is doing.

Too bad the wind is blowing the wrong direction. The kite keeps going behind the ship.

I bought a waterproof, padded case for the camera, but it still didn't feel too good! You can get quite cheap underwater boxes for many digital cameras now which would be perfect for most caving type situations.

You'll have to forgive me - this was my first time ever caving. Not sure where the Straws Chamber was. We never made it down the waterfall you can see at the start - but inside the cave the water level was not too bad. We made it right to the bottom where all the sludgy mud and worms were! The water level fell noticeably while we were exploring.
