Focal length of the average smartphone camera is just under 28mm. Just food for thought.

Matthew! Did you know Davy Crockett Used one of these Yashica cameras during the siege of the Alamo in 1836!? Using just one roll of Kodak Eastman 5222 black and white 35mm motion picture film he shot enough sprocket holes to stave off General Santa Anna and his army of 2000 men for THIRTEEN DAYS! Thank you so much for sharing! More people need to learn about the Yashica and its rich AMERICAN history of nearly 200 years. Learn more in my new youtube short "the untold history of the Yashica Mat 124G" SUBBED! Thank you so much

Hard to believe that this lens is miles better then the Fuji 27mm f/2.8... Yeah, this has f/2, but the rest is better too? Think the tab lets you focus this better/easier?

I have a Nikon 85 g F1.8 that I use on an APS-C camera giving approx 128mm perspective. I have a 50mm F1.8 that I use on an APS-C camera that gives about 75mm view. I use a 35mm F1.8 DX on APS-C as a “Nifty Fifty” although strictly speaking it’s a 52.5mm equivalent. My concern was that I didn’t really have any prime wide angle. Browsing around on Amazon one day, I noticed a Nikon 28mm F1.8 g on “special” 40% off, one left, so I quickly grabbed it and I use that on my old D610 FF camera as my wide angle setup. It is perfect!! The images are excellent, rendition, color and perspective all good. I am so glad I bought this lens to “balance” my prime capability. Cheers Y’All.

We also shouldn't forget that differences regarding the look and field of view are especially noticeable at the wide end. So while 24mm and 28mm are somewhat close, the difference between their field of view is very stark. 150mm vs 154mm wouldn't be as drastic.

28mm is an overlooked focal length - almost like 40mm. Because they are considered as boring. But that's their strength. They are allrounders with a very natural look. And there seems to be an abundance of them online

I use a lot the 28 f2 Ais, but in apsc lol, so, 40mm for me. Not "long" as 50, not wide like 35, with a nice close up range. Focal length for people mainly, good indoor and outdoor (like the old electronic rangefinder from the 70s)

I have watched many F3 reviews and have used the F3 for more than 34 years . I agree with you regards to how it feels to use the F3. Fantastic review maybe one of the best . I love the finders especially the action finder DA-2 . The many screens etc . I agree with the exposure lock button it’s a must on any film camera. Yes the 28/F2.8 AIS is an amazing lens

Near-far perspective is a function of DISTANCE not focal length of the lens. Short focal length lens only appear to distort perspective because they allow focusing closer. Thus for creative control, especially when rendering faces, one must first find the shooting distance to the subject producing the desired near-far size relationships - normal or otherwise - then choose the focal length which produces the desired in-camera crop. “As seen by eye” rendering of the size of nose vs ears on people is around 8-9ft and a 24mm - 70mm zoom will allow cropping in camera from that distance from full-length to head and shoulders and the facial perspective will be identical. If instead you were to use one prime lens and change the shooting distance to change the in camera crop the rendering of the face will change in each. You are not forced to do one to the exclusion of the other but understanding the actual cause and effect leads to a better informed choice to render seen by eye ‘normal’ or not.

Portraits? Your examples perfectly show the downsides: exaggerated noses, long face. Even though there is a certain aesthetics to it because of the environment view. For landscape, street photos and (nearly) full person shots I agree.

Hi Matthew, completely agree, the 28mm is perfect for so many travel applications. I find the angles are not to severe, and distortions are kept at bay. Also great for street and people.

"35mm is too long and also too wide for a lot of things", exact same thing can be said with the 28mm. I have both 28 and 35mm and I use my 35mm 10 times more than my 28mm, all I am trying to say is this is purely personal shooting style, no such thing which focal length is more useful, for some peope 28 is totally useless for some people 28 is their main everyday focal length. and for my own case, no, 28mm is the first prime I will give away not the only one I want to keep, 35mm would be that lens I want if I can have one, but then who cares, it's the lens used by me not you, right but I am not going to make a video to show people why 35 is so much more useful than 28mm though because I think those kind of video will be silly nd useless.

1:15, your argument for not picking the 35 is feeling it's just a little bit too "narrow", while I, having shot 35mm exclusively for 2 years now, keep saying to people (atleast in the past half year or so), that it's just a little too "wide". It's funny you should say it in the same way, but opposite. I think 40-50 is for me :) <3

If you have 61 megapixels and a 24mm lens, you can crop to 28 and to 35…… but if you have a 28 you can’t crop to 24.

I just got the Nikon 28mm f/1.4E because it's supposed to be great and also a good companion lens with the 58mm f/1.4G which I LOVE. As you said, the 35 is great, but sometimes a little too long while the 24 is usually a little too wide. We'll see.

Am very frustrated. Bought a mint X-T1 and a Fuji 18mm f1.4 lens. It does not work on the X-T1. An error message keeps coming up saying "TURN CAMERA OFF AND THEN TURN ON AGAIN. I did this scores of times and it does not help. Unable to fire the camera of get into menus. The warning just takes up the middle of the screen. My Leica 50mm R lens works with an adapter in manual mode. Could it be the lens? HELP !!!!!!

I have a Nikon F2SB and a Nikon FTN with lenses (20mm, 24mm, 28mm, 55mm macro, and 85mm), but when I traveled, I took my Olympus OM-1 with only a 28mm, 2.8 lens, in a "ever-ready" case, because it would fit into my carry-on hard-case with two-weeks of clothes. I forced myself to use only this focal length to capture scenic, close-up, portraiture, interiors just as you demonstrated. I heartily recommend trying a 28mm with film (or full-size sensor) and pay attention to minimizing extension distortion when doing portraiture, not too close to eliminate exaggeration of noses and keep the focal-plane as vertical as possible to reduce near-far distortion. 28mm is just too wide as a most important lens for me. Great focal range...but really hard to isolate subjects and get good detail from anything not up close. I carry a nikkor 28mm 2.8 Ais in the bag and love it to death... but I would probably have to go with my Pancolar 50mm 1.8 or my Olympus 50mm 1.2 for a desert island lens. ( or a really nice zoom😎)

I’ve seen this said a lot by experienced photogs, especially when they have to take just one lens. It’s wide, but not too wide, and not as compressed as a 35 or 40mm, where you often can’t fit much into the frame. I used this length a lot over the years, whether by itself or as the widest on zooms and it does feel just right. I also like the 42mm on crop- I used that a lot when I moved to digital back with the D70. Best of both worlds!

I disagree. 28mm is too wide for a lot of situation and not wide enough when you really need a wide lens. If you travel and pick just one prime, you already make a compromise, so what's the point of discussion? 35mm is the best middleground actually. Adding a 50mm or 85mm to the kit makes it a good solution for traveling.
