Nowhere Fast Garage

Nowhere Fast Garage

I like rescuing old cars, and making them run, perform and look like they should (in my view anyway). I also do the occasional upgrades and repairs on my '87 Buick Grand National, '71 Chevy Nova, and '84 Camaro Z28. Keeping the daily driver fleet going also ends up taking time and space on my channel for better or worse. Check back often for special guest appearances as well! Thanks for watching. -Anthony

    Had an '86 6 cyl "Gutless Cutlass". Seafoam green, Brougham model with the velour bench seat in front. God I loved that car. I wish I still had it. It was so easy to drive. Smooth and floated down the road. Great visibility. It just felt so open inside; not cramped like modern cars.Totally comfortable and luxurious feeling. If I still had it, I'd just do an LS swap and tighten up the suspension a bit. Great car.

    I loved my '86 Cutlass Salon I bought used in '87 to replace my '78 Turbo Regal, after the turbo went out for the second time. It was metallic maroon with white pinstripes and T-tops and had the exact same interior as your 442. The only thing I changed was adding a K&N air filter, aluminized dual exhaust, and replaced the wire wheel covers/wheels and whitewall tires with American Racing chrome nugget wheels and Goodyear Eagle ST tires. I would have taken a 442 over the Salon, had I found one. I really wanted a Grand National, but the insurance was killer for a college student. Then the GNX came out...they had one at the Buick dealership in the little town of Greencastle, IN, where I was in school, at DePauw University and became completely obsessed. If I had been a little older, with a job and money, I'd probably still have it today, although I'd miss the T-tops my Cutlass had. I still have pictures of it, though! Of these two, I'd take the GN, since neither have T-tops. I do agree the gauges were way cooler on the Cutlass and never understood why the baddest of the G Body cars had the same granny gauge cluster as every other Buick, with the exception of the turbo boost gauge. The GNX had the best gauge cluster, though, for sure!

    I had a cutlass salon also when I was very young- around 19. I only kept it a couple years and sold it to by an IROC. The cutlass was a much better car! I wish the GN came with the GNX dash. I have been hesitant to change anything about my GN dash because it’s a legit low mileage car.

    Tony, the ECM controls the fan-on and fan-off temperature. You have to burn the settings onto the 64 pin ecm removable bios chip, which I have done and it works great ! I used TunerPro software and a cheap bios chip burner to copy the settings down, interpret them, reset them and re-burn the chip with new fan on and fan off temp. All the in-block sender does is send the temp to the ECM, and then the ECM decides when the fan comes on or off. Unfortunately, those ecms were programmed from the factory to run at 220, so when the ecm metals degrade a bit the fan/on fan/off starts to very a few degrees. The answer is to force it to run at a little bit lower than 220 (like all cars did previously, and today they do) and you are good forever. I set my fan on to like 188 or 190 instead of 200+ and now my car runs at a cool 190 degrees all the time! Good for the engine too to run cooler. Good for your next year power tour -- sitting in traffic too ! Never mind, maybe 1984 did not use ecm. Not sure. mine is 1992.

  • @nowherefastgarage
    @nowherefastgarage8 күн бұрын

    Hey Bud. In 1984 the Camaro Z28 HO used a separate fan switch for the electric fan. This is the one in the head. There was also a temperature sensor for the ECM in the water neck, but that was only used to adjust fuel enrichment (I think) when it is cold out. Later years, the ECM controls the fan as you described. I took the ECM and harness completely out of this car when I replaced the distributor with a standalone HEI style. These fan switches are just more cheap junk that don't work right! If anyone knows of one that turns on at a lower temp and actually works, please let me know!

    A 1995 s10, I converted the mechanical fan to dual electric fans from a Grand Am. To get the fans to come on and off I bought a dual fan controller from a company called Davies Craig. The controller has 2 separate circuits, relays, and fuses. It also has a led read out and is adjustable. I know you only have 1 fan and the sell single controllers also. Might be something that can help you out. By the way, I miss the 3rd gen camaros... I had 2. I also had 2 2nd gens and a 69 that was so rotted out it fell apart (rear leaf spring came through the trunk at the rear!). I live in Georgia now but I am from Long Island( that explains the rotted out trunk and frame😅)

    You really need to get a thermostatically controlled fan on that transmission , 220 is to hot! They need to limit the number of cars and do this in 2 different events and 2 different dates. My guess is the foam is shot in your seats. While you are getting them rebuilt I would get rid of that uncomfortable artificial genuine vinyl.

    Glad you and your son had a good time. I’m 43 and my Dad is 75 and we did the trip together again this year in my Mustang. The reason why the lines are so long for merchandise the first few days are we have all learned they run out as the week goes on. However you should have received an email that has a merchandise store where you can buy your son a shirt. If you don’t have the link I can post it for you. Last year they bought more shirts and posted them because they ran out of so many sizes. My experience is they would have swapped with you the next day if it hadn’t been worn. My great grand mother purchased a 1970 Nova brand new and we had it in the family up until 2000. Your car brings backs lots of memories. What’s the black car on the other side of the garage? Is that why you’re thinking about bringing next year? Your right about 500 miles is a good daily limit in an old car with No AC and especially with a kid in tow!
