Heidi Shedlock - A creative life
Heidi Shedlock - A creative life
I live in South Africa with my family and animals in an old home that has needed much restoration. Far from my dream of a chateau in France, but your home is your castle wherever it is! I am a full time artist, painting from my studio at home.
As well as running an Art Business, I started Shedlock House, a home design company with my daughter Amy.
Most of my creative thoughts and ideas start in my sketchbooks. Sketchbooks are a place for creative play and exploration. My home, my garden, my kitchen and my art studio are all my creative playground, in my pursuit of a creative life.
As an art teacher who gave up teaching many years ago to follow my own creative dreams, I still love to help inspire others to follow their creative dreams too, create with freedom and most importantly have fun, get messy, make mistakes and create as often and wherever you can. Choose to live a creative life, with eyes wide open to the beauty around you.

I love the sticks. They are so versatile to use and travel with. I have never seen your channel before today and am happy to have found you. Thanks for sharing your art and outlook
Thank you Lori and welcome to the channel! I love the sticks so much that I have recently bought some more and will share more about them and how I love to use them soon. So happy you found the channel and look forward to sharing with you! 🌸
May I suggest Victoria Finlay's "Color - A Natural History of the Palette"?
Thank you so much for the suggestion, sounds great! I’m going to look it up right now! Thank you 🫶🏻👌🏻
Then you are of my own heart fellow book and colour lover! Nothing like sitting with a beautiful book, it’s such a treat! You are so going to enjoy the lovely stories in the book, so fascinating, I feel like colour is a topic you can be a life long leaner about!
I love 💗 books and more books 🥳. There’s something about holding it in your hands, the smell of the paper and the ink. I ordered The Secret Lives of Color. I’ve always enjoyed history and all the amazing colors that Father God has created. Just amazing 🤩
You can soak the end in a little water pot or cut a piece off and soak or just use like pan watercolors.
Those are all fabulous ways of using them! Thank you for sharing!
Love this!
Thank you 🌸🌸
Thank you for sharing! I love seeing South Africa through your eyes :) far away from Seattle for sure so it was fun to virtually “travel” ❤
Thanks for joining me all the way from Seattle and hope you join me again on more adventures, we have such a beautiful country. I will be heading off to the bush soon and will share a little of it here. We live in an exciting time when it is so easy to connect with others all over the world, thanks for joining me.
You might like a magenta Daniel Smith stick better than the opera pink, it’s also a beautiful color.
Thank you so much for the recommendation. I’m about to buy some more so will look at the Magenta, thank you
@@heidishedlock-acreativelife specifically quinacridone magenta. ❤️
Thank you!
Great art haul! 😮
Thank you! Jackson’s has such an amazing selection of art materials.
It's so weird hearing all these places, I'm from Nottingham in the Midlands in England!
Then you would recognize many of the names of places in South Africa 😝 Fort Nottingham was set up as the base for the Nottingham Regiment who were sent by Queen Victoria to protect the area from local tribesman. The fort is still there today and the area is known as Nottingham Road. Since this general farming area set slightly up the hill from Pietermaritzburg sits midway between the coast (and the city of Durban)and the Drakensberg mountains (which form the border to our province), the whole area is known as the Midlands. It’s made up of small farming communities and gorgeous little country towns and is a popular tourist route known as The Midlands Meander. Hope you get to visit us one day from the original Nottingham 😜🙌🏻🫶🏻
I never saw the ghost 😅
😂😂😂😂thank goodness for that! 👻👻👻It means you need to take me back again - just saying 😜🙌🏻🫶🏻
Thank you for sharing your trip with us 😊 You were brave to outdoors sketching in the KZN Midlands winter 🥶 I would have been by the fire all weekend 😂
I had what felt like a million layers of clothing on, I could barely bend my arms😂 and my fingers did feel like they were going to fall off by time the wind picked up - I think maybe it helped me to work even quicker and just record what I saw. As you know the Midlands has a beautiful charm in winter and the change in colours from a still green Durban was delightful. Although the best place all weekend was definitely by the fire😜
Great video! I love your music.
Thank you so much Dianne, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch 🙌🏻🌸
I would love to see your oil paintings
Thank you Renée I look forward to sharing them with you soon on this channel 🌸
I have never used oil paints and would love to see yours. I mostly use watercolors. Thank you for inviting us along on your journey.
Thank you Christi, appreciate you joining me and I look forward to sharing a little about my oil painting as well as my sketchbooks with you, thank you! 🌸
Hello Heidi, I don’t think I will ever take on oil painting. I have my hands full with water color and goache and mixed media. But I would love to watch you paint with your oil paints!
Thank you so much. Isn’t it wonderful that as artists we have so many exciting options. We are always constant learners. Always something new to learn, so I totally understand how you feel! 😜
So lovely 😊 and peaceful ❤. I’ll trade you weather. Highs near 100 but 109 with the humidity here in Texas. God bless you and your husband on your trip 🙏
Thank you so much! We too have such hot weather in Durban at the coast so it was lovely to enjoy some colder weather and change of season for a change. Hope you have some respite from the heat in Texas soon. Thank you for watching 🌸
What is the paint pen brand you use in the end? Transparent pink & blue. Enjoy your work. Thanks for the video.
I looked back in your videos & have the answer. Watched how you filled empty brush pens!!!
@@timbrant1538 yay! Glad you found it, I was going to direct you to my video on the brush pens so that you can make some of your own too if it interests you. I have really enjoyed using them and love that I can make the colours I love to use. The pens add a nice little pop of colour and some linear elements to the drawings. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch, much appreciated Tim.
I’ve found my TWIN!! I’m addicted to art books and cookbooks too!! I have no more room!😁
Love it! 😝 It’s a wonderful problem to have right?! My husband is always telling me I’m going to sink the house with the weight of the books!😂
Are they beter dan neo color 2??
They are like the opposite. Neocolor ll’s dissolve with water and Neocolor l’s don’t. So I don’t think one is better than the other, I love them both and use them depending on the technique or mark I want. For example if I’m still going to use wet materials like watercolour or ink and I want to keep the fresh mark I will use Neocolor l so that they don’t dissolve or loose the mark in the wet materials. If I want a watercolor or more painterly effect I will use the ll’s which will dissolve in the water or wet materials. I love them both for their different qualities.
Lovely Art Haul. I have Neocolors but they are the Neocolor 2’s have not tried the Neocolor 1’s. I like Holbein Gouache i have a small set. I too have used Talens sketchbooks the paper is lovely. xxx
Thanks so much, I appreciate you watching! I love the fact that the Neocolor l’s don’t dissolve and you can retain some of the mark making especially when your sketchbook page is a little wet. I actually love them both, the l’s and ll’s and they have been a great addition to my art materials. Thanks for sharing 🩷
I live in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dick Blick art store is my happy place.
Lucky fish! It would be my happy place too! 😝
Lovely art haul video. Thank you! Hard to select colors from color charts online; I relate. Videos like yours help folks get a look at the paint on paper and thats invaluable. I looked at pigment info for Moss and Elm and they are both listed as a mix of PY42 and PG8 (Pine Tree Green also has that mix). Maybe consider one of the other greens Holbein Leek, Russet Green, or Evergreen? I have also had the experience of shopping for a Neocolor ii and almost purchasing a Neopastel because even the search engines get confused. ;). After a few times of that happening, I ended up getting some oil pastels, and the Neopastels were on my list ha.
I should definitely have looked more closely at the greens. I had a beautiful deep dark blue green in the ShinHan brand that I deleted from my basket that I should have got instead😝 Next time! I’m glad I’m not the only one that means Neocolor and is thinking Neopastel. I could have kicked myself when I was editing and kept hearing myself call them Neopastels 😝🫣 And thanks for the Paint suggestions I will have a closer look at the pigment info - great tip for next time thanks
I enjoyed your video. Thanks.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you watching!
I’ll be very honest - I purchased almost every natural looking green color for my dry gouache palette, however the best was from mixing my own. You can mix ultramarine with some yellow ochre or a warmer yellow and play around with the colors
Absolutely you can! And the best colours are usually the ones mixed yourself from a limited palette but sometimes for ease I want just a dab of colour to add to something else like for example a dab of green to add to a pink to knock it back and then it’s just so convenient to have a premix that I already like on hand. But I agree the best colours are the ones you make yourself because then you can get just the exact tone you are wanting 👍🏻
I too love the NeoColours, I originally only used the 2’s but when you do a lot of mix media work, sometimes you just want the colour to stay where you put it and the 1’s are great for that.
Exactly! Often I don’t want the mark I’ve made to dissolve or disappear so I’ve been using the 1’s for that reason. I actually find I’m using the 1’s more than the 2’s now. I need to collect a few more colours.
I think we should have a competition on who’s got the most supplies lol
😂😂😂😂 it’s problem! 🫣 I often tell my husband - some girls buy fancy clothes or have a shoe addiction or have their nails done regularly. I do none of those. I just like art supplies 😝
@@heidishedlock-acreativelife me too I’m waiting on 4 things for $455 this week ssshhhhh Derwent pastel pencil 72 set the pH Martin set and 2 gauche 🙏 I got a lovely new set of mission gold watercolour set last week I will do a vid when they come awww so excited
SO exciting!!!! Love an art supply delivery 😝 Enjoy xx
I think I could hold my own in this challenge 😂

I have the opera pink since it is one of my favorite colors. I don’t find it to be different from the other colors I own in the sticks.
That’s good to know, thanks for telling me. It must just be mine. It feels scratchy, perhaps it was a batch that wasn’t mixed properly or some other reason. But I do love the colour so have still been using it and enjoying it.
Yes hi I am in Canada but I went to New York recently and went to a Blick store in Manhattan. It was so much fun.
How wonderful! I can imagine it was, I would have been like a kid in a candy store 😝 Thanks so much for sharing Suzanne
Just saw this. Haven't had the best luck using wc pencils.
Just keep playing and experimenting with them. I always think there is no right or wrong way, what feels right for one artist may not work for another.
Hi, I am from Australia. Happy to have found your channel. Will definitely stick around ❤
Yay! That’s the best kind of compliment, thank you and look forward to sharing with you! And hi in Australia all the way from South Africa!🙌🏻🫶🏻thank you
If I used rice or cornmeal I'd have every mouse in the county here! I use play sand instead and it works almost as well
Oh goodness I didn’t think of that!😂Luckily I don’t have that problem but thanks for sharing the play sand idea. I can see how it would work exactly the same.
I love the Koh-i-Noor branded products. They're little unsung heroes because they're so good and so affordable
Yes, I agree. Since filming this I have become more aware of other products by this brand and it really doesn’t get enough limelight. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve tried so far.
Me running to the kitchen now hehe great idea I think I will make cardboard dividers too
Hahahaha, you made me giggle 😂 The rice works so well. I find the dividers to separate cool and warm colours just helps me when reaching for a colour, you know where to look😜
I found the sticks to be more affordable than the tubes for basic colors, so one of the things I've done with the ones I've purchased is cut off slices from the sticks and put them in my pallet along with the tube paints. It's worked well for me.
Such a great tip, thanks for sharing. It’s definitely a great cost saver if you can find the colours in the stick and use them this way. Thank you
I love the texture of the pink!
Since filming this I have used it quite a bit and I absolutely love the colour! No regrets about buying it. It adds an interesting little pop of colour.
I’ve never used pastel pencils even though I have a small set in my collection. How do you sharpen them? I’ve seen where artists claim that you have to use a craft knife. I understand your temptation when you see lots of beautiful 🤩 colors 😂 You are not alone ❤🎉
All those gorgeous colours are always so tempting😝 Many artists use a craft knife, I’m afraid I may loose more than the pencil if I do that😂 and some artists use a pastel pencil sharpener…you can buy sharpeners especially for pastel pencils. But I just use my regular hand held sharpener and go really slowly. I also never sharpen them to completely sharp points as that is when they break, I sharpen just enough to use them, and that seems to work for me.
Very nice!
Thank you so much
Great video as always! I never knew you could move pastel with water. Have you tried using alcohol for your soft pastel? I tried it for my color pencil work as an under painting. Btw I have the same problem of buying colours im drawn to, open stock. Then coming home and finding I have doubles 😢. gioconda is also a koh-i-noor brand. I love their colour pencils
I haven’t tried using alcohol, I will definitely give that a try! Love finding new ways to use supplies, thanks for that. And I didn’t know the Gioconda were Koh-I-noor as well! I have only seen the soft pastels in our shops, I will definitely keep my eyes open for them now that I know. Thank you so much for watching, much appreciated 🙏🏻 Have a beautiful creative week💐
Always here for an art book review! lovely to see your over the shoulder view of the Hockney sketchbook.
It’s such a beautiful book! Hockney’s drawings are so simple yet so full of life! Thanks for watching, I love a good art book! ☺️
Loved the vid hun I have not heard of big magic so will be getting that. I think you have inspired me to do a video of my favourite books as I also have a huge selection heheh

@@Karlena_Lewin_Studio hello Karlena, so lovely to meet you too! I have family in New Zealand, near Auckland, I so hope I get to visit NZ one day!
They work best when applied soaked/damp onto wet paper
Thanks so much for the suggestion. I will give it a try, thanks.
I was wondering about using them that way, like when you use oil pastels dipped into turps. I watched this video because after many years of painting and Arthritis in my hands I am looking at throwing out the paints for something immediate that I don't have to struggle with opening paint tubes and jars etc.
@@glynislaidlaw4064yes these are lovely to use if dampened first or even used with a brush but if you have oil pastels and the smell of turps doesn’t worry you, you can also use your oil pastels in that way too. Baby oil also works well with oil pastels. You can work with them and then work into the marks with baby oil or even linseed. I will be doing an oil pastel share sometime soon. But hope these options work for you and are easier on your hands. I hope you find an easier way to keep creating 🩷

Glad you're doing better! Postage costs? Here in the U.S. it's just gotten ridiculous! It really has hurt buyers and sellers alike.
Agreed postage costs have almost doubled in the last 2 years. As an artist it has made sending artwork, especially larger artwork to overseas clients even harder. I now send all larger paintings off the stretchers and rolled in a tube. The drastic increase in shipping costs has also had a disastrous effect on art supplies in South Africa as most of our art materials are imported…and the weak ZAR currency doesn’t help either. So if I know of friends or family traveling to South Africa it’s cheaper to purchase in USA or UK and have the supplies brought over in their suitcase.
congratulations. I just got some new stuff, 20% off!!!!!
Awesome! I love a good art supply sale! ☺️
I lovvvvvve your style you have a new fan!!! Do you give online lessons?
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! I have an online community called Creative Community Studio which is an online support for artists and we have a website with over 100 tutorials on various topics. I don’t necessarily teach my particular style, although I do lots of demos, but show others how to progress in their own art journey. Links to the community details are in my show notes of each video.
