The video quality looks good to me. Summer of 1965 my family went from Toronto to Vancouver on the "Canadian" CP route through Banff. Came back Vancouver to Toronto on the "Super Continental" CN route through Jasper. Wow what great memories.

maybe it'd been the 900-mile detour from Ton o' rot -- ended up plying Lake Superior's dual-tracked gorgeous north shore..! -- that let that intensely bright prairie sun give my adolescent self nasty vertigo when we stepped off the train after three days spent aboard it, it'd crippled me...we'd missed two trains from Montreal to hook up to because we were 27 hours late...and that horde of yankee retirees aboard, freaking out about Skylab possibly crashing onto them AT ANY MOMENT

Many years ago, I took the Super from Toronto to Vancouver and back. I used to work for CN Telecommunications, so I had a pass that got me on the train, but I had to pay for the sleeper. As I recall, back in those days, they had separate Toronto and Montreal trains in the summer, but joined them in Capreol, Ont. during the winter. When my work had me in town, my co-workers and I had to pass through the train, when we went for coffee in the morning.

Took this train for the first time June 1977 from Winnipeg to North Bay ON, when it was Canadian Pacific. Scenery was the best on CP tracks in Northern Ontario i.e. along the north shore of Lake Superior. (VIA Canadian travels on the more northern CN tracks.) My seat was in the Skyline Dome car, in the front section where half the car had regular coach seats . The snack bar was at the back of the car.

Yes, it was an interesting trip along the shore of Lake Superior. I didn't know CP's Skyline cars used to have coach seats where now there are tables and seating for the snack bar.

You remind me of the call to board in Winnipeg's Union Station: Train No. 1, the Super Continental is now ready for boarding, to Saskatoon, Edmonton, etc. That was the exciting moment when I knew CN would take care of me all the way to Vancouver.

Hi Dave. Your project sounds interesting. Unfortunately, during one of my many moves, I trashed the Super 8 films. I projected them on the screen and used a rented video camera to make VHS tapes. I sent the tapes away to have the movies converted to DVD. What you see here is the DVD playing on my TV while I film it with my Canon point and shoot camera using movie mode--thus the extreme degradation of the images.

as a child i used to walk to a nearby park (that wouldn't be unusual for a child in the 70's) by the tracks at a time i knew a train would be going by . the black and white train cars i am seeing in this video (and haven't seen since) are what i saw at the time. thanks for posting.

Yes he did have a lot of stories. As a kid I was really interested in the railroad and he indulged me by answering my questions after each of his trips😀. He started braking in 1945 and retired in 1985, so was part of the transition from steam to diesel. So lots of stories 😀

I have to admit that I have not really given this idea a lot of thought. Maybe when I retire I will consider this. One story which I can tell you relates to your video and involved both my father and I. Around the time your video was filmed, the train dispatchers office was located on the second floor of Union Station (there is no longer an RTC in Winnipeg). I was around 10 or so and on one occasion my father took me up to the dispatchers office. One of the dispatchers let me push the button that cleared the CTC sign for the west bound Super Continental at a station as it headed to Winnipeg. That was many years ago and I still remember it vividly 😄

In 1957 as a 12 yr old Boy Scout I went on a 2 week canoe trip in Algonquin Park, the CNR Montreal -Sudbury Line went through the park and every night the Westbound Montreal section of the Super passed, still daylight until nearly 10pm but I didn’t have a camera then, alas the train and the rail line are both gone.

Re the MILW sleeper question, Yes. CN purchased some MILW Super Domes, Skytop Sleeper-observation cars and sleepers in 1964.

I’ve never seen a side dump hopper car in action before. Amazing it doesn’t tip right over😳. White Rock is a rail fans dream. I love when a train goes by while walking on the promenade.

Yes, those are the European-built Renaissance cars. The coach I rode of that type had 2+1 seating, instead of the usual, 2+2. I had my own little cubby though, sort of like first class on an airliner of today.

That's true. Today's transcontinentals are extremely long, such that they extend beyond the platforms. Providing "smoking" breaks requires making two stops, first for the front cars, then move ahead for the rest of the train to line up with the platform. Even then, one can be left standing in the weeds.

Grew up in Winnipeg in the 1950s, 60s and early 70s. Lots of familiar landmarks and the echoes of train whistles at all times of the day or night still bounce around in my brain. Thanks for posting this. Good job.
