Nope, off-roading not permitted. In fact, most of the year you are not allowed to drive your own personal vehicle through the main canyon. You have to take a park shuttle.

America's Serengeti is the Crazy Mountain Basin. The Lamar Valley is a high mountain valley that historically had very few large ungulates and predators.

It's a frequent nickname used by Yellowstone staff and visitors. I'm not sure how technically correct it really is, though.
