Welcome to my channel. I am the Guitarist for Progressive and Jazz/Fusion groups The Hand Farm, finneus gauge, McGill Manring Stevens (with Bassist Michael Manring), Jones McGill DeCarlo (with Bassist Percy Jones), and FreakZoid as well as a number of solo discs. I am also a guest on a number of discs as well.
My various recordings and teaching materials are here and I am now currently featuring my Guitar Chord series "The Chord Book" which is a comprehensive practical organised and logical approach to Chord Playing on the instrument. The approach is unlike other chord instruction books or videos and is organised around string groups and the video content for this will be ongoing. The material is for any player but it is generally geared towards Jazz, Fusion, Advanced Pop, and Classical musicians. If you like the material please subscribe and if you have a moment please spread the word to others who might be interested in the material on my channel. Thank you in advance. Scott M.

Great content Scott. Hope you've been feeling well. Thank you for continuing this series. Is there be a print book of this material available?
HI Gabriel, Good to hear from you and thank you--hoping you are well too! Yes I think there will be but there is not one as of yet. I will have one at some point and thank you for the interest in this series!!
Mind blown!
Thank you Keith-it is a great book!
Beautiful chordal work =) So inspiring for that compositional head space, A true gift here Scott! Thank you =)
Thank you Jimmy and always great to hear from you--much much appreciated and please keep doing what you are doing-let's stay in touch! Scott
Such unique and fantastic sounding voicings. Do you use these for chord melody stuff?
Thank you my man and yes indeed. All the Chord book stuff is all over my albums from the beginning in the late 90's.
Keith, this tune, in particular, is based on that string set I believe--the melody is "inside" the chord much of the time and there is a good bit of the 1256 chords from what I remember in addition to similar sets: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aJWeycOLlcitoqg.html
Great job 🤟🤠🤟
Thank you Pedro and much appreciated!!!!
Really helpful and great analysis - how do you get to play that fast - a la John McLaughlin?
Hi Rick and thank you-I am glad you find the content of interest and its greatly appreciated. I've always admired John McLaughlin. I did a lot of Violin studies, Piano transcriptions, and listened to a lot of the faster stuff to get it in my ear. I work on it daily and try to push it hard. Listening to the greats and trying to get my own vocabulary near as I can to that level I suppose.
@@mtstyre7768 many thanks for responding, all the best!
@@rickjensen2717 Let's stay in touch!
Brilliant Scott!
Thank you Keith--that was such a long time ago now.
What this man is doing for the guitar community is unheard of. Great player and awesome teacher
Thank you my good friend! You and I will keep going!!
Couldn't agree more! He was my instructor maybe 20 years ago, and I know I wouldn't be the player I am today without Scott's teachings.
@@RemoCocco TY my good friend and it was a great pleasure-those were great days!!
Thanks again for another awesome video, Scott! How are you plucking the 1256? Looks like you're chicken picking a lot? Which fingers?
Thank you Remo and much appreciated! Yes it is pick and fingers and I think it probably has that element to it. I always liked Jerry Reed etc.
Really good lesson. Being 7yrs old, I think an updated version - being plugged to be able to be better heard would be awesome, but extremely useful. Thanks
Thank you Gus and I appreciate the feedback. Yes I think an updated version could be good so yes thank you for the idea. I have to get my direct sound a bit nicer as I still prefer a live amp but I need to be quiet with it. Let me have a think Gus and much appreciated!!!
@@mtstyre7768 Awesome thank you. You did a great job explaining the concept over a static key. One thing I also wonder about is how you can apply this sound over a changing chord progression (whether ii, v, i or otherwise) I’m going to give you a subscription.
@@guskalogeros9021 Thank you Gus and much appreciated for the subscription as well. Yes a tune with some changes would be a good one. Perhaps a "modern jazz" tune for that. I like it!!
amazing!
Thank you so much Lucas!!!!!
Splendid tutorial.! Thanks
Thank you and I am glad you found it of interest! Hope to stay in touch..
Great man!
TY - gonna keep on bringing the stuff!!
This is deep man! 💥💥
Thank you and I am glad you found it of interest. That was some time ago and my first release in Europe/Japan. Months later in the US. We made it on a budget of maybe $600 in three days. Lean days those were! Let's stay in touch!
Perhaps a link to Coltrane etc using this idea?
Yes and the Harmonic Minor with a raised 4th as well for that use.
One of the common devices for substitutions over a dominant chord in jazz is to use the harmonic minor scale, 1/2 step above the chord over which you’re improvising, so supposing the chord was A7. You would use B-flat minor, again, because of the common tone of C# or D-flat, so the Fifth of B flat becomes the raised fifth of A, and the Bb itself becomes the flat ninth❤
Well stated!
This is great stuff! Any chance you can raise the guitar level on future videos? Thanks.
Thank you Alex. A very good point but apologies as I have already done them all and am just in the process of getting them out and am working on other related material in relation to it as well.
@@mtstyre7768 it's great work you're doing Scott. Perhaps future videos can have the guitar a bit higher, so it's clearer to hear the voicings. Thanks again.
@@alexfattoruso TY and much appreciated--We live in a small place so I am always afraid of the neighbours but I will get the volume better.
Always great stuff !!
Killer!!!
My man!!
Awesome!!
TY brutha!
Real interesting and inspiring. More slonimsky please. I've used his 12 tone pattern in 3rds on an F jazz blues just before the change between F7 into Bb7. (bars 4-5)
TY Otis and glad you found it of interest. I like what you say about the F Blues and yes let's do some more on the book!
What a great sound! Loving this one Scott!
TY Arran--it is a cool sound isn't it.
This is a real cool one. Back to the book for me! lol Time to get rippin' 😊
Nice one my man!!
Hey Scott, I was a student of yours in south Jersey back in the day. I’ve been getting back into more theory intensive playing and I was so happy when I found your videos!! Thanks for the hard work you put into making these videos, they’re greatly appreciated!
Remo, it is great to hear from you and thank you for the kind words! I appreciate it and thank you--good to hear you are taking your playing to a strong new level and let's stay in touch!
Yeah that’s cool but have you ever played a power chord before?
LOL! Yes and nothing beats them Matt!
Fantastic! Thank you, thank you! Have heard this sound forever in the music I listen to, but I've never heard the concept behind it broken down so clearly. Big new vista in my development. Exciting. You'e THE man!
Thank you Michael and I am glad you found that of interest. Go for it and much more to come. Let's stay in touch!
Excellent lesson!! Can someone please tell the awesome Mahavishnu track you are plsying over ? Carve on amigo
Thank you Bruce and very much appreciated! It is called "You Know You Know".
Killin man!! Love this series!
TY Nat--there is much much more to come and we have the chords my man!!
Fantastic!!!!!!!!
TY very much and glad you found this of interest!
This gives me so much and spice upp my poor improvisations vocabulary - I´m partly a good composer, also was a totally hopeless understanding music theory (also in writing English to) so this is very important to me. (tuning guitar EADGHF - also building my own keyboards - a neutral one, not like the Classical keyboard/piano.)
@@securitasreceptionenbonnie4149 I am so glad to hear it is of help-keep going and stay in touch!!!!!
Your clip regarding pentatonics has given me a tottaly new perspectice for me- very useful - often I have a hard time understanding - A big big BIG thank you, from me!!!!
Walter, I am glad you found it of interest and found it helpful--many thanks and let's stay in touch!
Thank you!
My thanks Nikolay!!!
Scott Is a serious player
TY very much Mark and I am glad you found it of interest. Let's stay in touch!
Play it, with love and respect! 🎶🎵🕶️
TY Richard and I agree!!!
Thx for that clip. I follow all the theoretics (as I am a big admirer of McLaughlin and Lane), but what really kicks me is your picking speed. You use only alternate picking? What hints could you share the improve picking speed, durage and uniformity?
Thank you and much appreciated for checking out the material. For some odd groups I might repeat a pick stroke but usually its alternate picking. Try just two strings at a time and move them up and down the neck instead of across to focus in on the picking (start on both down and up strokes to see what works for you) and small excerpts of Violin Studies (memorised) are very good too as exercises to move in all keys and on all string sets. I hope that helps and let's stay in touch.
@@mtstyre7768 Hi Scott, thank you!
@@SwamiOrchestra of course and keep on it!!!
It does sound great when you play it at a reasonable tempo, but all this lightening fast picking? I can only take a few seconds of that before I just tune out. Just sayin'. But I am definitely looking forward to tryout out this Bbminor to AMajor fusion. Thank you, I subscribed and gave a thumbs up!
Thank you Robert and duly noted. I think I get a bit too excited about this stuff at times. Please let me know how this works out for you and let's stay in touch. Much more to come.
You still got it!
I just keep plowing away my man!
Just came across this and was looking for a good intro to jazz improv for my son. It has been over 20 years since I took lessons from you. Glad I found these videos.
TY Brian and great to hear from you!! My best to you, your son, and your family and let's stay in touch! I hope this material is helpful and of interest!

Nice...closer camera to fingerwork might help.
Thank you Kee and that makes sense.
Great lesson, very well explained. Once you get into it you can really identify the sound of it being used in certain tunes.
Thank you and yes you are right on. It is an identifiable sound the great have used. Many thanks!
I am a very very mediocre keyboard player and I got something out of this lesson. Thank you, Scott!
Thank you Matthew and I appreciate your post. More to come and let's stay in touch!
