    I just knit my first ever brioche swatch after watching this video. I watched many others that left me confused and insecure. This is the only one that explains what techniques were used to cast on. Most other videos leave this detail out and leave you with a fragmented feeling of doubt. All the details and tips for what to look out for are crucial! I understand the nature of brioche now. There were many times during my swatch that i felt i was doing it wrong but i knew what to expect so i kept going with success. Also I've never seen anyone wrap the yarn around their wrist for the hold arrangement. This is a game changer that has already fixed a constant issue i used to have with the yarn slipping off my fingers. Other videos have slick state of the art production value but useless low quality information. This one is a true teacher! Thank you.

    Great video..easy to follow. One suggestion, my adhd finds the background (your cutting mat) pattern very distracting. But I learned 2 things I didn't know from this one video! The invisible join and estimating your cast on length by simply wrapping on the rt hand needle-BRILLIANT. I have only been knitting year but gosh I wish I had known that before! Esp before my first sweater, lol.

    Use the Dawn. It’s a perfect pH for wool and works as well if not better than the UPS. On really greasy fleeces 2 lbs at a time, I use a full cup of Dawn. When it encounters the lanolin, it emulsifies and becomes super easy to rinse out.

    How are you enjoying the Polonaise? I'm sure you're now able to spin beautifully as 2 years have gone by. I have to say it was a very brave choice for someone who didn't know how to spin - it's a fast wheel for a beginner! I've ordered one myself, in walnut, so I'm hoping it arrives within the next couple of days. Would love to know what you think of it now after 2 years.

    Ok, so here I am now power watching your videos, how fun to stay up and watch reviews!! Love these hooks, so pretty! LOVE the blanket you made, I tried tunisian crochet and never could get some of patterns down. I just stuck to regular crochet, which eventually took me to knitting then spinning. I always used the Boye hooks and loved them but over the years of crafting and working full time I developed carpal tunnel and I know that fatter ink pens are easier for me to use than thinner ones...I think there is a lot to be said about ergonomically correct products, and looks like you found some good ones. Thanks for sharing!! I subbed!!

    Some of the ladies at our spinning group use Dawn and recommended it to me but I have been using the Unicorn power scour and I love it. Yes, its a little pricey BUT i literally used maybe 1 t per 5 gal bucket of water. There was no suds and rinsing was a breeze. The other thing I liked about it is you can use it on stains on other fabrics and materials. It will even remove wine stains and pet stains. Because I have pets and grandkids it was worth it in the long run. The fibre I scoured was really dirty and it came out exceptionally clean, even some of the yellow areas were gone. I think some of those were just dried lanolin..I did a presoak in hot plain water which helped tremendously, and made it easier for the scouring soap. Next time I will use less fibre per bucket and maybe even use some flat bins to give the fibre room to spread out some and maybe get bigger lingerie bags too..There is another scouring agent I'm going to try sometime called Eccoscour by bearcreek felting..I can't wait to watch you spin the BFL...how are you loving your wheel?? Also, your assistant did good camera work!

    OMG I'm so jealous!!! I just bought a Kiwi3 about a month ago and was so excited, Ive been spinning some since but am having problems with over twisting. I've learned a little how not to so much but a lot is in drafting and treadling to fast. Anyway, just have to tell you this story..first I bought the Kiwi then because I'm a craigslist fan I found a Polonaise there a man was selling due to his wife passing away for $600 in the mahogany, just like yours so I did a little youtube research on them which brought me to your channel. I watched your video of the reveal and assembly in which you did a marvelous job of!! Bravo for you!! Now here you are with loads of lusciousness to spin on a beautiful wheel.. I share your excitement on the unboxing and discovering the textures of all the fibers!! I started on Corriedale from a shepherd that lives not far from me, I skirted, scoured, carded and spun it. I love it sooo much and its a dream to spin with. I highly recommend it for us newbies, as I've also been told by others that its a good one for us to start on. I also bought some Corriedale top from Paradise Fibers but I had problems spinning the top due to drafting wrong on top. I hope you will be making videos of you spinning its really valuable to other newbies and each mistake you make will help you and us learn as well. Good luck...PS I love my kiwi but I think i might have to buy the polonaise, I love the portability of the Kiwi but the polonaise is the only wheel you would ever need for home use and awesome eye candy!

    I loved reading all of your comments, and I wish you lived next door! We would definitely figure all of this out together. I actually want a Kiwi3 really bad. I feel like my wheel is really too fast for my ability. If I had lower ratios...But, I am trying the jumbo whorl and doing better with that, so maybe one day...Again, I love that you took the time to spill all your thoughts. So much fun...

  • @ImGinaMarie
    @ImGinaMarie3 жыл бұрын

    @@snowyowlknits4009 Yes, it is so much fun to learn things together...I think you would like the Kiwi it is a good "beginner" wheel so I've been told..but I, like you, love the look of the saxony wheel and you dear, have the goldilocks of them all! That's how Evie describes Saxony wheels. LOL You probably bit off a little more than you could chew, but you will conquer!! I can only tell you what really helped me and that was watching KZread tutorials and getting a better understanding of how the wheels work, how the components work together, how to determine and solve some of the problems to get what you want, how to draft depending on the fiber you are working with and dealing with patience. Don't get a Kiwi unless you have intentions of joining a spinning group or you want to take a wheel to the park or outside to spin. Everything you need is right in front of you, and you have the ability to have scotch tension, or double drive. I agree with your mentor who said start with the scotch tension....SLOW down treadling, understand that depending on your whorl size each time that HUGE wheel goes around your yarn twists once. Practicing treadling teaches you how to go slower, and faster and achieve rhythm. The ratio I have been having the most success with is a 5.5:1. Do you have a blog page or email? The most important thing I think I've learned is stay hungry for knowledge...its seemed to have helped me some, and checkout jillianeve on KZread look through her videos and play lists shes a doll and very, very helpful. Hang in there. Look up worsted spinning and woolen spinning too, watch a few videos and grab the books I told you about...Also, think about joining craftsy or find a spinning group in your area. Practice the pretend spinning with the length of yarn it helps immensely to help you learn how to adjust your tension and somewhat get the feel for drafting even though its yarn...Feel free to delete my lengthy ramblings...seriously! I just really want to help with what I have learned, and learn more myself! Can't wait to see what you do next!! Good luck!!

  • @snowyowlknits4009
    @snowyowlknits40093 жыл бұрын

    @@ImGinaMarie I adore Jillian Eve. Also, I can't agree with you more that I got way more wheel than my drafting ability can handle. That being said, I can only get better with practice. So, I have many small bundles of almost-joy yarn. And I am proud of those. Even my attempts at plying make me happy. I just think that with the time of distance learning due to Covid, that I am having to do so much blindly. But I do love the Saxony style. Every time I walk into the room where the wheel sits, I want to spin. I won't name her or him until I feel that I have made a significant jump in success. And it won't be Polly. You can't be more right when you say that keeping on keeping on is a worthwhile thing. I can only imagine being a young girl hundreds of years ago knowing that I had to be competent so that I could clothe my family. Yikes. No pressure or anything....

    I am getting a few Zoom lessons from a gal named Mel, and I'm getting a little bit of practice. I was doing great with drop spindling, but this is proving to go so fast that I'm a total Klutz! The only thing so far that has proven to be a con is that the bobbins are soooo slippery. I finally used a tiny bit of double-sided tape to hold my leader in place. I'm sticking with the Scotch tension for now, rather than double drive. I am using this short window of time to check email and to answer questions. We are under a terrible winter storm in Texas, and I was without power or water for 32 hours! As soon as I can be sure of power, I will post a video of the wheel in action. I do love it, and it calls to me every day! I have a little bit of single ply on the bobbin. Honestly, I am racing to knit a bunch of clothing for my granddaughter, who is due in 6 weeks, and so I haven't worked on my wheel enough. :)

    Gorgeous yarn, great pattern. BUT it’s too small for my adult son with big curly hair. Could you recommend how to make it bigger and a bit slouchier??? Thanks so much. I love it!

  • @snowyowlknits4009
    @snowyowlknits40093 жыл бұрын

    I think it depends on what yarn you are using, and the diameter of your son's head. Measure his head and don't snug the measuring tape up too much. If you need another inch, then add an extra stitch or two to each section, front, back, and ear flaps (again, depends on your knitting gauge). The decrease sections will become apparent as you work them. I think if you want it slouchier, you could stick to the original decrease directions if you add extra stitches at the beginning, and it will naturally be slouchier.

  • @snowyowlknits4009

    Begin decreasing when you believe that the hat should begin to shape; its a personal choice! Some people like their hat to be slouchy, others for it to form-fit to the head. That being said, allow approximately two inches for decrease rounds.

  • @snowyowlknits4009

    I'm sorry I am late getting back to you! So, picking up the purl stitches can be done. In essence, the opposite side of the purl stitch is a knit stitch. You can pick up the knit stitches on the front side, and the purl stitches on the back side (which will be just like the knit stitches on the front) using two strands of thread. Once you have the two threads, you can feed them in order onto your needle. I hope this helps!
