What temp do you keep a tank like this at? Would a 50-65 degree basement be ok without a heater?

I find that Moina tend to handle softer ph and higher temps whereas the Daphnia magna tend to like a more alkaline ph and colder water. Just my 2 cents as a culture nerd myself.

Hey! Do you know if Hyalella azteca scuds are destructive to the aquarium flora? (Stem plants, mosses, süßwassertang, macroalgaes such as red moss) I'd like to have scuds, and Hyalella are the smallest I know of.

Great video man. I am a culture nerd too. I just wanted to add one thing. I keep a reservoir full of greenwater and feed it to my moina and daphnia every couple days. Just wanted to mention there is a hybrid scenario and that is what works for me. I use a 55 g rain barrel as a large greenwater reservoir.

Are scuds a safe option to have in a tank with shrimp? I have a pretty big colony in a small pond outside and was interested in maybe adding them to a planted tank with some pipefish as a food source, shrimp, and maybe dwarf cory cats?

I made some green water with the same principles in a 5 gallon bucket, added daphnia and all died. They are kept "outside" under a clear polycarbonate ceiling. The water was dark green like yours, it was made by adding plant based fertilizer but no salt. I don't know what could have possibly killed them, I thought it was going to be great for them... I got some pictures of the green water. Some people say "don't add too much food" could that be the cause? Can you help understand what went wrong? Thanks a lot

I just ordered both Daphnia and a few other things but I'm kinda wishing I bought the green water also. I have a few buckets made with the scuds I also purchased from you a few months ago and they are thriving Tony. But know I'm seeing your green water cultures I should of bought that as well,, my 5 gallon bucket has been going for 2 months and the water is definitely green. But I have 2 other 5 gallon buckets going that I have the light on 12-14, hours a day it might take a little while to turn green. Anyways I love the videos and this one is gonna be good and it will give me pointers on getting green water. Tony you definitely do live cultures great man I enjoy your videos and I enjoy getting those live critters from you oh and my fish love it as well 😀

What algae specie is in the kits? I was also interested in if you have tried various algae culture types vs daphnia long term success? Here's a list of algae species commonly used to feed Daphnia: 1. Chlorella vulgaris 2. Scenedesmus obliquus 3. Ankistrodesmus falcatus 4. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii 5. Nannochloropsis sp. 6. Tetraselmis sp. 7. Isochrysis galbana 8. Dunaliella tertiolecta 9. Phaeodactylum tricornutum 10. Spirulina platensis

I love this! Thanks for making it so accessible. You did all the hard work and now we just have to get a starter and can potentially keep it indefinitely with a little fertilizer/nutrient. I'm just getting started with daphnia and wanted to avoid all the powders and the like.
