You said you wanted it as a pop to the shops bike, so leave as is as far as possible - throughout the rebuild. That way you will have more time to take the dog for a walk! 🙂
3x7 👍👍
Leave as is, but spray the inside of the frame tubes with some rust protection.
@@fredhenderson6303 great point thanks!
I think you must be retired to be able to free up so much time for training, something for me to look forward to 👍
@@nicholasfulford209 no I’m an online running and triathlon coach, I’ve been coaching for over 15 years!
Great video as always Tom. I was feeling a bit unmoviated this morning but watching these made me grab my trainers and get out there.
@@MyCovertNarcissism ah I love this Thankyou. That’s great to hear!
Hey Tom, got my first sprint tri done, i tried to take your advice and relax on the swim but the race day jitters and adrenaline got the best of me, couldn't control my heart rate getting in the water, and the cold shock also had me off guard, first time swimming in open water haha, so i botched the swim a bit, had to do breast stroke for a few hundred meters until i got the breathing under control and did a steady freestyle to the end, had a really good bike though set a PB 20k is 34 and half mins, and ran a 22min 5k so rescued it at the end there. Much to learn still! spent about 11 mins in total in transitions so a lot of time to save there however it was a massive event with thousands there so it was a bit hectic, anyway, cheers for the tips! would be cool to see some swim training footage but i understand its not easy to film at the pool without a helper and when its busy etc, Cheers!
Gotta be the main reason to be in a running club, a BBQ 👌
@@SwimBikeRunStu absolutely mate. That’s why we fundraised for a gazebo!
Tcut with foam pad on a cordless drill then clear lacquer if required 👍
@@nicholasfulford209 love this idea and I’ve got those bits in the garage just never thought to try that here thanks! Got foam pad adaptor to polish my son’s car headlights!
Yes I do the same stops the plastic getting discoloured
Takes me back.....50 years ago used Richmond Park as a training ground. Would cycle over from Ealing, ride two laps and maybe a couple of climbs past the Star and Garter home and back home again. Happy days.
Was it more or less busy back the? bikes or cars!? Thanks!
@@Tomridesandruns It was generally quiet if memory serves me right. It was a great training circuit but had to watch out for the deer when rutting season was on. We are talking late 1960's and nothing like as many private cars on the roads. You have brought back some happy memories for sure.
I would leave it as is. It's only original once and I like the patina.
I agree thanks, its taken 30 years to look this good
Leave as is. The idea of a runabout bike is to not attract thieves.
@@noelsmith1852 I’ve slept on it and I think that’s the way I’m going. Thanks for the comment.
Where is part 2
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (Heb 9:27) And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: (Acts 17:30) I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. (Luke 13:5) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23) For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13)
Yeah but what about the Kona
Love it. Got a 97 Kula and a 03 Kula Deluxe. Still ride great due to choice upgrades over the years inc. Middleburn cranks and rings. Noice 👍
My first true MTB was a 1990 Kona Hahanna- still to this day one of the sweetest riding bikes I’ve owned. Got rid of my Trek Fuel to go back to steel and now have that wonderful Reynolds zip with my Cotic Soul.
Great bike! I just picked up a 93 Kona in similar shape. Currently going back together and waiting for parts
Wouldn't say no to the XTR front and rear. Let me know.
@@user-yo4os4gp1i DM me on insta they’re yours mate
@@Tomridesandruns must set up an insta. Will do tomorrow.
I had a Cinder Cone in 94...I put narrow tires on her and commuted into Manhattan. I had a Pro-Flex back then. Kona was one of the really good MTB companies in the 90's. So many have come and gone...sad...including Kona
The bikes aren't the same anynore thats for sure! Commuting into Manhatten sounds amazing!
Bring her back to as honest a condition as you can , strip the frame , respray in Kona green , get new decals , new wheels nearest to orig. A classic re-born. just look at raleigh bmx restores , a Raleigh tuff burner going for 1,500 quid fully restored. Go for it mate , theres a market for retro and good money to be made if it looks 90s box fresh!!! A lot of work i know but im thinking doing it
Love this idea thanks!
Couldn't afford that one back in the day , got a 93 Cinder Cone and then a 95 Lava Dome with Project 2's , Equilibrium and propulsion tires. The Lava dome took me from Glasgow to Fort William with Tyoga Phycho tires . Nobblies for 100 miles . what did i know back then ,,, Kona was always my fave brand
Me too! I lusted after an Explosif! 100 miles on a 26" with Psychos good work!
Nice one. Thank you for the video - quite calming to watch :) The camera seems to be mounted quite low, yet ist must be on your head. How did you achieve this? Are there any chin mounts for cycling?
Oh, I just realized at 28:30 that there is no mount. You presumably are using those "bite mount" ones? For 30 minutes? That would drive me nuts ^^

I haven't had a chance to watch your half ironman video yet, but glad to hear it went well. I was interested to hear your thoughts on the contribution that regular walking can add to a training regime. I think I would benefit from that too, as I spend long days at a desk with too big a gap between bike rides. The way you break your year down into focused blocks is also giving me food for thought. Thanks for the videos and insights 😊
Incredible effort Tom. All-10s so far.
How does perform compare to a road bike?
@@rohanisidore1890 to be fair, it’s not a million miles away, Sesame not as aggressive and as fast as my SL7 but for longer distance steady rides it’s very comfortable
Good Luck at Holkham mate, i'm sure you will smash it, you've been really consistent with training and uploads so it will hopefully all pay off! Any advice for someone doing their first triathlon(sprint) in a couple of weeks ? i haven't done much swim training at all, but am very confident on the bike as i've just completed a 200 mile event and also run a fair amount for cross training. Cheers!
Sorry I missed this mate and hopefully just in time for your race but keep it nice and steady on the swim, just get it done calmly and get in the bike without spiking heart rate too much, then just tick off the miles but fuel well before and during your race! Let me know how you get on!
@@Tomridesandruns Don't be silly! you've been super busy, just watched your latest vid, sucks about the toothache at holkham but what a way to rally and get the job done at Ironbourne! cracking effort! well done mate. And thanks for the tips, i'll be mindful on the swim and try not to swallow too much of that delicious water in the river Thames 😅 the event is next weekend so i'm just practicing transition in the back yard and having a taper week haha!
Good luck Tom!
@@paulamarie2325 Thankyou!
IMO you could have used a even wider tire. But since you already spent your money it is what it is.
@@charlesmansplaining I think these wheels will take a 35 mm tire which I wished I had gone for and I might put these 30s onto my works Wheels at some point in the future. Thanks very much for the comment.

Great idea for a ride Tom, and awesome stopping off to do a Park Run en route!
Thankyou so much! Got to keep that training exciting!
The utter disdain some drivers have for cyclists is baffling. It's like they are just indifferent to your safety whilst barreling past you in a 5 ton metal box, for them if they hit you it's a paint job, for you if they hit you, it's the forever box or life as a cripple. CRAZY!. i never realized how bad it was until i started cycling this year, i try to stay off main roads as much as possible but you always get one that tries to make a point by cutting past you as close as they can because you delay them from passing for maybe 20-30 seconds. And they don't realize it but the that time is insignificant anyway, they don't arrive to wherever they are going any quicker, they still end up at the same set of traffic lights they would as if they never had to pass you in the first place. Stay safe out there mate! Really inspiring stuff seeing the amount of effort you are putting in each week 😎
Thanks so much for the comment, and the lovely words. It is terrifying how close drivers think it is okay to get, they don’t see us as cyclists, you are right. They see us as objects holding up their journey home. It does terrify me, but I just love cycling so much. Stay safe and thank you.
Mate, come on... Why risk your life like this? There has to be a straight back road that isn't as busy as a strip club on fathers day.
I know what you mean, 95% of the drivers give plenty of space which there is - its a long wide straight road with loads of visibility aand always used for 10, 25, 50 mile TTs for those reasons but some drivers just take the p!55. Thanks for the comment, made me laugh!
I think you should keep it. I've a similar bike a Raleigh Dana-Tech 625Ti and is is a beautiful ride then even better when I put Conti 5000 28mm tyres on
Thanks so much I’d love to keep it but got too many! I’ve got a dynatech 705ti (the brightly coloured one) with Zipp 303s and DuraAce 9000 groupset!
I had 3 Raleigh Torus titaniums but I only paid for one! I had the blue painted original in 1992 and rode it like crazy. I think it was about 1996/7 that I discovered a crack in the seat tube/top tube junction. The Raleigh lifetime guarantee kicked in! I went to Cliff Pratt Cycles in Hull on a Saturday and handed over the frame. I went back the Saturday after and picked up a new frame which looks exactly the same as the one in this video. In about 1999, another crack, this time in the seat tube to BB joint. Another new frame! This time with disc tabs on the rear. But after such a 'cracking' time on Raleigh titanium it was sold on.
That’s awesome cheers it’s lovely to hear about these stories from the 90s!
