  Using a game engine might make your life easier, but actually knowing how to do it the hard way, makes you more valuable than the rest, and it gives you the creativity to experiment with it. There is a reason why video games are shit these days, video games made by dumb people are always shit. If you can not be bothered to do it from scratch, then stay away from making video games, there is a reason why games were better before mainstream engines came out.

  Games weren't better before game engines came along. There were plenty of bad games in the 80's and 90's. It's a waste of time trying to reinvent the wheel, when the likes of Unity and Unreal have already done the heavy lifting for you. If the engines weren't free then it's a different scenario. I used to use the DirectX api when I first tried to code pc games, and it was hard work, having to use matrix maths, just to rotate an object, and going through hoops, just to learn how to plot a single vertex. Most people haven't got the time or knowledge to code an engine from scratch, so why not make use of game engines as a shortcut. If you were working at a company that develops AAA titles you'd be using an engine, anyway, like Unreal, CryEngine, Frostbite, etc.
