Can I spray say 5 coats without wax then the final coat with wax and they will all harden? I’m restoring a 1957 Lone Star Meteor that’s in real bad shape.
So I cant find any where what the time in between coats 20 min, seems to be all I can find. Or when it is tacky to the touch but does not come off on your finger. So does that apply for the final coat of gelcoat with wax?
Don’t expect the “magic” folding chop strand if you use epoxy. The binders only dissolve in polyester.
Exactly.
Awesome 👌
Thank you for this video
Thanks
Welcome
Hey, just wanted to encourage you to keep making videos. I appreciate your content.
Thanks Doug! I’ve been spending a lot of time on my other channel which is really growing.
Goggles?
If you wish to wear them you absolutely can!!
Can you use mdo on a deck?
You sure can!
I'm a novice wanting to make my own gelcoat. You mentioned you washed off the PVA??? What is that used for? And when did you apply it?
Želim hrvatski prevod
un effing bearable.
Funny, that’s exactly what your wife says to me about you.
If you attempt this don't forget one critical part he glossed over. Didn't catch where he did the PVA top coat so it will cure non tacky. Just caught the mention that he washed it off. If you skip the PVA or wax additive, the results will not be good.
Dollar Tree has shower curtains for $1.
Keep it coming I’m wiring my boat now great job
Great video buddy! Helpful, thank you!
Thank you. This is exactly what I needed.
Please keep creating we need your videos.
Well. That’s probably The nicest comment I’ve ever got!!! Where are you from?
You're most welcome!! I'm out near Sacramento, CA
I would try a chipcoat gun
Hello I want to try and spray gel so I watched a few your videos and I’m a little confused. In one video you mix 12oz of gel coat and calculate 32 drops of mekp, but you calculations in a separate video would suggest 64 drops as the appropriate amount. You also mention in comments that you never thin gel coat to spray, but the I watched another video where you thinned the gel coat with mek. Not mekp but mek. In another video where you are mixing gel coat and silica for a filler you add 2 oz of gel coat and some silica and the add mekp for 4 oz instead of 2? This might all make sense to someone with a lot of experience such as yourself, but to people who watch your videos it can be confusing.
What’s your question? Maybe I can help.
They are way too expensive to be providing such SHITTY service. I had my one and only experience with PODS last year. NEVER EVER again. They also like to slip in surprise charges they never told you about....but only AFTER they have picked up your stuff.
Agreed
U fool
Mono styrene is what is used to thin resin.
Very odd 🤣🤣 you must be from up northeast 100 %
Use a proper pad spur. If you pick up wood fibers or splinters, you will be chasing swirls and pig tails forever. That boat will get thrashed at camp. I like using guide coat, but $50 guide coat vs a $10-$15 spur. Invest in the spur.
Thixo it is.
I know this is an older video lol but... comments on YT can be harsh on audio but that being said its a learning curve my man haha Just separate your audio from your video into file of its own and adjust the quality i.e (background noise, loud parts etc...) before adding it back to the final product during the editing process. Having a better mic helps alot but it aint everything. Good stuff though, keep it up brother man :)
Wow! Turned out nice!
What do you sand it with?
Sand paper.
Very nice
Thanks
Will thank you for the video. When prepping to apply the gelcoat, What is the difference between wiping down the surface first with acetone vs. lacquer thinner? Thanks for the videos BTW.
Not much really. Acetone flashes faster, so for me it’s quicker.
48 seconds before topic is covered? Intolerable for new viewers.
I know… 48 whole seconds…… must be horrible for you.
This is a very late observation to this wonderful video. To avoid clumps of silica in your resin Strain the dry silica before mixing it into the resin. Force it through a strainer with a table spoon
What a great comment!! Truthfully I just learned this method a week ago. What a difference!! Thank you!
I have an older boat that is very similar to a sunfish, and the bottom of the hull is in bad shape with spider cracks. Do I need to sand all of the old gel coat down to the fiber glass and then put new gel coat on ? Thank you for your response
What about flow coat? Id be interested in that
Do you know how much is cost to hire a driver and how much payments cost for a big rig , and fuel cost ? Overhead is expensive, they obviously can’t do that.
Good customer service is free though. PODS has none of that.
Hard to watch too much blah blah blah
Well I guess if you want to watch videos where you’re watching people work and not learning anything then this isn’t the channel for you.
if you had it, could you have used TotalFair by Total Boat instead of your home made mixture? I get the idea that these boats are poly ester and not epoxy layup, and I have used TotalFair, a lot. thoughts? thanks, Chuck
Hi chuck. Total fair is epoxy based therefor the gelcoat will not adhere properly. Second total fair is not the best fairing compound out there. It's far too expensive for one, and really does not cure well. If you become a channel member you'll see why I'm not a fan of total boat anymore.
@@HoldFastMarine Hi Will, I subscribed. interesting that you say this about TotalBoat. I have had some issues with several of their products an there are just other brands that are go to for me anymore, Epifanes for paint and varnish, west system for epoxy, that sort of thing
I just picked up an older sunfish that was, use the term loosely, repaired by the previous owner. He plugged the cockpit drain hole with fiberglass. Will that sand off?
Possibly. I’d need to see it to be able to tell you. I say just rip into it and see what happens!
Needs a bend test for flexiness…
Seeing the condition of the boat you’re working on makes me feel better. I’m working on a 1968 Sunfish left outside in Arkansas for the last 5 or 6 years but it doesn’t have the hull damage yours does. Was the bailer already off when you got the boat? Mine is the metal bailer rusted on so have to cut it off. Luckily there are You Tubes to show me how. Glad to see you wearing a mask. You’ll be glad you did when you’re in your 70s!
I removed the bailer. These are not my boats. I hate sailing. They belonged to a Boy Scout camp. I wear a mask when I can! Thanks for watching and the great comments! I hope you subscribed!!
Well at least you had the door open. Wearing a mask with carbon filters is a pain and you sweat! You can get away with it for now but each time it adds a little to your lungs so IF you make it to your 40’s you may be wearing an oxygen mask. I’m 78 and have had tinnitus for 40 years bc real men don’t wear ear plugs when shooting or running loud equipment!
Well bud. When I filmed this video I was 42 so I made it! I always wear ear pro training so we’re good there!!
If he waxes that POS he exceeded the value .
😂😂 true. But it’s a starter boat for some first timers, I’m sure they’ll upgrade to something better.
What happened to the sound?
Where? I just rewatched it. Didn’t find any issues with the audio.
I've found your videos very informative. I'm restoring a fiberglass car body and made the repairs using powder-coated random strand fiberglass mat and epoxy resin instead of styrene to avoid the 'wax' the use of which intimidated me. My question is can I gelcoat over the epoxy repairs? I seem to remember an issue with epoxy in one of your previous videos. If I can't gelcoat what would you advise?
First mike, thanks for subscribing. I always respond to subscribers. To answer your question, you cannot put gelcoat (which is polyester) over epoxy resin. It just won't bond well. Your only option is paint now. Next time just buy poly resin with the wax included, then you won't have to worry about it!!.
Great info ….i just bought a 1972 triton 26 ft….that will need a internal and external refurbish,,,,,,
Whats great is u show what u did wrong as im a diy guy i get it and this coosa fiberglas new to me and i want to do what your doing a wheel house also on 18ft. So thanks
You are very welcome! Thanks for watching, and if you haven’t considered subscribing!
Your wire looks way undersized to fuse with a 100 amp breaker. Did you use an ABYC ampacity guide?
Sure did.
A bit unclear and not sure if you're using the right products. Filler is used to fill holes, epoxy if structural. Perhaps a layer of fliberglass resin might be a better choice than gelcoat. The gelcoat is your finishing product. Am I correct?
I’m confused by your question. But I’ll try. I never use epoxy resin. The gelcoat contains wax, which fully cures everything below it, ie the resin without wax. Also finishing with gelcoat helps fill in the glass mat and gives you a smoother finish for fairing.
@@HoldFastMarine Maybe I'm confused, but sure looks like your NOT finishing, but cleaning up a rough surface, and looks pretty rough, and not sure if the surface was structurally compromised, but looks iffy. that's why I'd use Epoxy, and perhaps some cloth to help smooth out the rough spots. After which I'd sand it, clean it, touch up with filler to fill spots or voids, and THEN go to the gel coat which would be the last product.
I’m not finishing, nor am I finishing a rough surface. I’m curing the resin with the gelcoat. You say that you would do all this work with epoxy and then do your gelcoat. Gelcoat does not stick to epoxy. But you go and do things how you wanna do them. I do things the way that I wanna do them.
Where can I get the fiberglass mat and 1700 08
Hamilton marine or fiberglass supply depot
