Camo Specs Online is dedicated to displaying official canon paint schemes for the Battletech universe. The videos here are intended to help hobby painters of any skill in getting their miniatures painted.
I've followed this tutorial, as well has a friend of mine, and both of us have experienced that Basilicanum grey is WAY too dark for this. It blacks out the entire mech.

6:32 the blue as it says on the tin, is intended to paint the barrels of the PPCs and I think the yellow might be to paint the front of the base to show facing.
@CamoSpecsOnline17 күн бұрын
You’re correct in their potential/intended uses, but for a beginner set they aren’t the best colors to include, nor is the army painter yellow much fun to work with.

Before the dry brushing or washes, do you apply a gloss, semi, or flat clear coat/varnish on the entire miniature first?
@CamoSpecsOnline3 ай бұрын
If you tend to be rough with your drybrushing technique then it wouldn't hurt to put a bit of flat or semi flat varnish over the thinner speed and contrast style paints but it's not a hard and fast method for me. Sometimes I'll spray some varnish with my airbrush to protect speedpaints if I'm doing other wash or wet type of painting next to or near them just to prevent issues.

I got to the contrast part and everything was looking great but the contrast dried and just left the entire mech black !

I've heard this time and again and for some unknown reason which I can't pin down. Perhaps the strength of the Basilicanum Grey has changed or it's adhering to the base colors better than it did to my chosen paints. Either way I'm sorry to hear it blacked out your work. I'd suggest a different grey/black contrast paint or perhaps using about a 50/50 mix of the Basilicanum and contrast medium to thin it.
@roewedge3 ай бұрын

Fantastic work. Going to try this out. However, the few times I've used contrast paints, they seem to rub off easily when dry, eg. with holding, or even drybrushing gently. Did you seal the contrasts with varnish before drybrushing?
@CamoSpecsOnline6 ай бұрын
Your experience isn't uncommon and you're correct that a coat of varnish will prevent that issue and allow you to drybrush or continue to paint over the contrast/speedpaints.

One thing to add: different primers react differently with different paints. Yeah, we all know that. However I found in my "experiments" that Vallejo primers are somewhat problematic with Army Painter Speedpaints. They're too slippery and slick and the paint flows a little too much on them. Unsurprisingly Army Painter primers work better, holding the paint in place and giving it better saturation. I need to test Citadel, AK Interactive and Scale75 primers as well to find out how they'll react. Generally the more matte primer, the better and Vallejo's are more satin if not in finish, then in feel at least.
