  The Diggers had to decision to shoot them was not taken lightly, to leave their comrade behind to live a life of hard work and cruelty. Those who could not bring themselves to shoot their best friend, another officer or the vet did it. After all their work and service, to be viewed and deemed as Collateral damage was an affront to their memories. It affected the soldiers so much.
