We do a modified version of this method with our daughter. I never allow her to get to the point of crying because we want to encourage healthy attachments, so if I hear her start whimpering on the monitor I will go to her before she starts crying. I give her a minute to see if she settles (because sometimes she does whine in her sleep) before I go and stroke her chest, talk to her, potter about the room so she knows I’m there, just sit on my bed so she knows I’m there… and now she’s doing fantastic. It took about a week for her to get used to it. Night times are so much easier than they were before we introduced any kind of sleep training, and my partner and I have two hours for us before bed. I could never leave her to cry but self settling is definitely a valuable tool for your baby as they get older.
