The eighties were terrible because there was record high inflation and insanely high mortgage rates, high unemployment, the longest recession ever, people lost their homes. The economy was so bad, people would come to the bank to deposit their house keys saying they couldn’t pay anymore, and bank managers would refuse them because they knew the house would be too hard to resell.

Tbh you did say publix that's one of the most expensive places to goto. If you're looking for cheap junk Walmart. Cheap produce is win Dixie. Lastly publix is just expensive everything so that's kinda on you. NOT saying you shouldn't shop there, I love publix too, don't get it twisted. But don't go in thinking it's cheap: my rich distant family ONLY shop at publix... Just chew on that next time and try Walmart for anything not produce and win Dixie for that. Then try comparing prices and see if it's different

Education is subpar these days, taught by "teachers" whom most of them have barely any wisdom themselves. Only to grow up and compete with thousands of other kids for the same job opportunity because of continuous population growth. To find out that they are disadvantaged from the start because they weren't born from a rich family with lots of connections and other types of advantages from their parents/family. And when asked why, because "mommy and daddy wanted children", a very selfish reasoning. What human life want that kind of life?

The reality is that the old middle class lifestyle isn't really sustainable from a climate change and earth resources perspective. We now know that. Back in the day, this was not an issue that was talked about at all. The excessive consumption can't keep going on. Having a massive house which blasts aircon from May till October is not what people should be aspiring to these days, it's not sustainable. Going to the mall every Saturday, sorry that has to stop, once a month too. The only way to put a curb on this excessive consumption is by increasing the prices.

Yeah but most of other items are actually cheaper than 30/40’years ago. Telephone calls, flights, entertainment (cinemas, books, music), fuel, and bills. Ah, and interest rates (mortgages were at 12-16 pct normally). Now, as a rule of thumb people (should) spend a third of their income on housing, and the rest on all the other items I mentioned. Based on that, the actual income these days is very comparable if not most likely higher than those years ago.
@lead_tv27 минут бұрын
It’s not, adjusted for inflation minimum wage in 1980 would be around $12 today. And prices for items and amenities decreased maybe 40% depending on the item while housing has increased more than 200% and college has increased more than 300%

People whine about the Federal Reserve, term limits, campaign financing, doners and lobyists, etc... They're all distractions so you won't see the root of the problem. It's Congress having too much power to regulate and tax everything under the sun, and spend like there's no tomorrow. The American people are too stupid to vote for the kind of people that will reverse that. So we are doomed to hope and wait for the next revolution.

My best friend is in a not-by-choice DINK marriage. She met her husband when I was pregnant with my first kid. That kid just turned 18. They’ve been together this whole time and got married, but every time she brought up having kids, he talked her out of it by going over the finances. The sad thing is, he wasn’t wrong. They’re barely getting by in a one bedroom apartment. Now that she’s 42, she’s given up on her dream to have kids 😞

Go back to 1970 and it's even more striking. 20% of global GDP was speculative trading then. It's 90% today. House prices have grown with GDP. Wages and salaries are real money. So to buy a house today, 90% of your income would need to be from speculative investments. You have to have real money first to earn pretend money to buy a house that is only 10% real in value. Hence why people are living in garages.
