It's concerning that the experienced teachers are considering to leave the profession..Here in Nepal, the situation is even worse as teaching is not very lucrative a profession here..

Most politicians are totally out of touch with the real world. All we get nowadays from them are cover ups, guesswork, supposition, it's becoming increasingly difficult to find one that actually tells the truth.I used to vote SNP but no more,in fact at the last election I voted tory and I regret it ! I can remember when we had government ministers that worked for the good of the country but sadly these days are long gone what we have to contend with nowadays beggars belief.

After years of teaching, obtaining advanced degrees in education, language and music; creating, adapting and adopting lessons and defending these regularly by deferring administrators to state and local policies to better services my students and community, I still have educational administrators who know little (if anything about the subject) harassing and trying to intimidate me to change grades to makeitseemlikethestudentsweresuccessful. The vast majority of students (as Sir Robins said) need to become aware of the concepts and structures of the subject matter first before they or anyone can experiment with being creative and bring forth meaningful ideas. Some of these aformentioned administrators believe and put into play plans where the students are to become "creative thinkers". In reality this only gives the students a vague understanding of the subject and they walk way with a false sense of accomplishment and ignorance of their true lack of abilities. I understand what you are saying, but I don't quite agree. The creative process can be developed in children alongside the skills and knowledge. I, like you, would disagree with the temptation to replace knowledge and skills with "creativity", which I think you are alluding to here. But just like problem solving in mathematics, creativity can be grown and developed throughout the school years, without compromising other skills and knowledge development. There are a range of skills and dispositions/attitudes surrounding creativity that need to be both learned and maintained. They need to be practiced or else they shrivel up. Some of these skills and dispositions can look messy in practice, and can feel inefficient against the tried and tested knowledge transfer pedagogies. But that is often because the onlookers don't often have a trained eye, and therefore don't usually know what to look for, to recognise an underdeveloped creativity skill set proceeding along a development path. This is where I believe more training of teachers is necessary, not that they can't do their jobs - they can - but to add this dimension to their scope of knowledge.

@@brendanh8193 No, creativity can not be taught. There have been many studies done, including the by U.S. armed forces which highlighted that skill and creativity are not the same. One simple example can be seen in children's drawings of houses, which for the most part always include smoke coming out of a chimney, even in places of the country where houses don't have one. These representation are based on experience presented to then by others and mimicked by the child. Jordan Peterson stated in an interview that "people don't possess ideas, ideas possess people ". So, true creativity is very rare and to insist that teachers should be trained to teach it would be like a baby crow teaching it's parents how to fly.

Is a child in school to learn about life? Skills needed to enter their community, and world at large. Apply strengths they are born with or developed into while on the journey of not failure but learning curves of life??? Do we allow minds to open up to divergent thinking to surprise and surpass beyond what we already know?

You might be interested in a book Margaret McMillan wrote in 1903: eduation through the imagination. She was the first who determined the place and function in primary education. I wonder why people that talk about education and imagination hardly refer to her.

Excellent speech! Such a pity that so much potential remains locked up because the people in charge don’t know how to deal with it. Should be mandatory viewing for every teacher, principal and anyone having any responsability in the educational system...

I feel it should be far more emphasized at this point in time just how urgent all this ought to be held. I'm increasingly seeing this all as matter of bare survival as species. As a (biological) culture. Enabling an organic synergy, some primordial synchronization, perhaps on the level of body language. But in the next few years, really.
