    That's safe? I mean, how do you know there's no dead animal above or someone piss nearly by?

  • @VividIceland
    @VividIceland20 күн бұрын

    That's a good question, and the short answer is yes it is safe. The place where this glacier is located is quite desolate and as a result there aren't many animals that live in this area, plus there is no food for animals on the glacier either so they tend to avoid it. Also, at this time of year, most of the animals have either flown away or are at much lower altitudes. We also scout the area and check where streams are coming from, most originate deep within the glacier so it's very pure water. And of course we always check if there are people nearby and to make sure they aren't peeing on the glacier! Please come visit one day!

    @@VividIceland Hi! Thanks for reply. Two things: for sure someday I'll be there. Second: what about "bacteria" or things that you cannot see with your eyes. I know Iceland is well known by the purity of their water and air (this last one gets less attention) but I have this second concern. Thanks for reading!

  • @VividIceland
    @VividIceland20 күн бұрын

    @@sobrehombre9338 I think for sure there is some kind of bacteria in the water, but I believe it's such a low concentration that your immune system and stomach acids would probably deal with it quite easily. This terrain is incredibly barren so I would imagine only the hardiest of extremophilic bacteria would survive here. Since they are adapted to surviving in such an extreme environment, I doubt they could survive the harshness of the human stomach. For what it's worth, I've been drinking water from the glacier for more than 7 years and my house's water supply is a glacier fed stream as well - I've never had any waterborne illnesses. Hope this answers your query :)

    @@VividIceland That's interesting. Yes, that help. I know the Icelandic houses have a very clean water and I say this because I know because global warming and the melting of the ice it can have some type of bacteria. All the water on Earth is around 3.8 to 4 billion years old.. it’s been changing between liquid, solid and gas for all that time.. moving between rivers, oceans, glaciers,the sky.. and us.. think about that next time you piss in the shower.

    @@VividIceland Here is what I found. Apparently it was a cargo ship that burned down in 1974. "..the remains of a Swedish cargo ship Sigurður Gísli, VE 127, built in 1946, that caught fire in 1974 while sailing from the Westman Islands. The ship was carrying a cargo of cement and timber when it ignited, forcing the crew to abandon the ship immediately. The burning vessel was eventually beached at Landeyjahöfn, where it was left to deteriorate without any attempt to salvage or repair it. Today, the wreck is still visible on the beach at Landeyjahöfn, but it is just an irreparable piece of history."
