Fantastic clips of my old days on steam. I only ever worked one train up Lootsberg pass and that was with a GMAM garratt in 1996. I think that was the very last steam ever to work up the pass. I heard him mention class 25 condenser no 3511. I worked her many times out of Kimberley then in 1992 my driver John Gilberthorpe and myself worked her to De Aar and return. Once back at Kimberley we dropped her fire and she has never steamed ever again. Very sad indeed. Also in the clip he mentions the video "Steam Fever". This video is a great reminder of John and my days on steam. Of course he and I are on the Red Devil in that video which was just luck we had that engine the day the video was made. After that they came and interviewed us at our homes. Just don't look at my hair in the clip :-) It was great to see the class 23s on the Kimberley to De Aar line. I never saw them in regular service but was lucky enough to work no 3300 to De Aar once. The line is now virtually rusting away with about one or two trains daily. As for long distance passenger trains in SA, nowadays there is virtually only the Blue train and the private Rovos Rail luxury train. Now and again the railways put on a long distance train but much of the time they do not make their destination and busses are called upon. If Mike is ever down in Slovenia it would be good to make contact as I might know him from years past. Im sure he knows me together with my driver John and also another English driver Geoff Hall who is also in the video Steam Fever. Thanks again for a great video Richard Niven
Great clips of my old stamping ground. I was based in Beaconsfield and was the very last steam only fireman. My well known Driver John Gilberthorpe and I worked for years together both to De Aar ar and Bloemfontein. In your video the second loco you say is a 15F when it's actually a 15E with poppet valve gear. Very rare footage. Also you mention the mechanical stokers. As you say the 25s were all m/stoked but many of the 15Fs also had stokers fitted and all 23 also. Only other classes to have m/stokers were garratts Thanks for posting
Many thanks for your interest in the film and your very informative reply.
@@svsfilm today I watched your great clip yet again and to the end this time. It brings back so many great memories to all my firing days on SAR. One more correction at the end on the Pietersburg line you mention class 24s. The only 24s on that line were the washout trains to Nylstroom about every 3 weeks to exchange the loco for the branch to Nylstroom. The locos in the video are actually the larger class 19D 4-8-2s with long tenders which worked together with 15Fs on this line. I certainly look forward to more clips and especially Germiston area where I virtually lived on the railway
Thank you! We lived in Slinfold as kids in 1972 and used to go picking blackberries along the disused railway line. We also kept an eye out for Roman remains, as some remains had been found by others. We never found anything, however.
Interesting personal comment. Thanks for watching!
Thanks again.
I remember seeing an item on TV shown the day the RAE railway was closing. Invincible was hauling the last train. That was in 1968. Twelve years later, at the beginning of the 1980s, I travel behind Invincible on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.
Yes, it's great that 'Invincible' found a new life on the Island. Thanks for your interest and for watching.
Thank you so much posting these great films. I was born and raised in South Africa. I grew up around trains in the 1950's as my grandfather and father worked for SAR and also Rhodesia Railways. My grandfather was assistant Superintendent of the Natal division reporting to Mr J.D.White. My father was a coach builder in Durban and later in Bulawayo. You mention Soul of A Railway. I have spent so many hours going through this fabulous collection of photos. I am now in my mid 70's and live in North America. I so enjoy watching your films. Thanks! sincerely.
Did the Rumble’s Electrical Store building got demolished?
Yes, the Rumbelows building was demolished in the 1990's and the road junction location was slightly moved.
Even more great footage thanks ! I remember us kids 'Bunking' Guildford shed a few times, just go on to the station platform then under the bridge. It was easy to get in, we then just had to avoid the shed foreman. Guildford always had quite a few Q1 Austerity locos known as 'Charlies' on shed. Happy days !
I am pleased you enjoyed the film. Guildford shed and the train crews are featured on the DVD 'Guildford - an engineman's view' - details at svsfilm.com/gfd.htm
Excellent colour footage ! Nice clean locomotives still with their number/name plates. Those were the days ! Thanks for uploading.
Glad you enjoyed the cine film. Lots more to come in the later part of this year.
I know I did this line as a small child, but can't remember anything specific, except for the black locos that hauled us (probably BR 4MTs) being large and very scary when they whistled!
The locos working the Guildford to Horsham line in its last years were the Ivatt 2-6-2T 2MT locos. Thanks for watching!
Although the track alignment doesn't exist anymore, after crossing Victoria Road the roads through the industrial estate and behind the retail park does follow the old railway route.
Many thanks for your comment.
oh wow.what a memory.i was there on that day with the 1036 squadron.
So pleased you saw the film and that it stirred memories.
As the line proceeded, close to where the B&Q now is, there's a road fittingly named Invincible road that follows the old alignment for a way
Thanks for that information and for watching the film.
I remember invincible as a young boy , I also remember Rumbles the electrical shop ,I bought some floor joist when it was demolished for a garage I was building at my first house in Blackwater , The garage still stands today hopefully with those floor joists in the roof proper recycling 👍
Glad the film brought back memories. Thanks for watching.
Sweet!
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks for watching the video.
You're welcome? That one was a good part. The horns, & winds are playing good music, that part was my favorite.
Thanks very much for your kind comment. It makes doing the videos worth the effort.
How adorable
Excellent job on this video!! Thanks for sharing it with everyone! Thanks
Many thanks for your kind remarks - makes the technical work involved worthwhile!

Amazing to see
Very pleased you enjoyed the film. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this, particularly the section on the Pietermaritzburg, Donnybrook, Franklin line, on which I worked as a fireman during my university vacations at the end of 1972 and 1973. Despite a few inaccuracies (coal and water were replenished many times along the route) it brings back many (very tough and hot!) memories.
Sorry....end of 1971 and 1972.
Many thanks for your kind comments. Glad you enjoyed the film.
Hi Karen, you & Dill are great! We have two Cockapoo pups, male littermates. Your videos have been invaluable to us. I return to them often. It was challenging in the beginning, but the pups are doing great. Thank you for helping me to feel confident grooming them. I’m enjoying your whole Cockapoo series, thank you!
Hello. It's so good to hear from you and that the videos have been of some help - it makes the effort here worthwhile.
And know the ANC communist party did steal everything that whas in good condition before 1994 because they don't appreciate it.
Santa Fe locomotive 2926 is now back in operation again after a rebuilding process of 20+ years and this engine is a spectacular sight to see in action. Hopefully in 2024 ATSF engine 2926 will be able to start hauling excursion trains across New Mexico and i am eager to see that footage when it finally occurs.
Yes a fantastic job has been completed.
Her tail never stops wagging 😊
Dill, the Cockapoo, always loves to 'work' on her exercises. Many thanks for watching!

0:14 Invincible Is A Bit Like Percy The Small Engine From Thomas The Tank Engine And Friends The Original Series In 1984. Thanks Mate. X
Indeed, similar colour and number of wheels.
Just great!!
So glad you enjoyed the film - makes it worthwhile scanning, editing etc.
Hi, I’m just starting on my cockapoo journey, I’ve found your videos very useful indeed so a big thank you for that. Where do you get your cleaning products from
How old is Dill at this point?
She is just five years old in this video. Many thanks for your interest

Wow, how technology has changed☺️
Certainly has. It was fun transferring the old 16mm movie to modern format. Thanks for watching!
The Bridal Centre is closed, at least last time I checked. But I had not realised that the Invincible Locomotive is at the Watercress Line. I have seen the locomotive at that line but didn’t know it was the same one till now. Weeds have also covered the rails, unless of course work has been done as of late.
The video says at the end that 'Invincible' is on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway - the Watercress Line is not mentioned. Many thanks for your interest and for watching the film.
@@svsfilm I think I misremembered. My apologies.
No worries at all. Thanks for watching!@@bobo577
An Ivatt class 4 2-6-0 on Guildford shed! Was she en route back to the Midland from a visit to Eastleigh Works? My old eyes weren't able to see her number. I went on this line very many years ago and remember M7s being used. I also visited Guildford shed and recall a couple of stored G6s in it and a T9 in steam outside. 1:37 1:37
Many thanks for your comments. Yes the 2-6-0 is number 43063 and it was shedded in North Blyth (52F) until it was withdrawn in 1967. A Guildford fireman recalls it had been at Eastleigh Works for some sort of repairs before returning via Guildford back north. It's certainly a long way from 'home'.
I love your videos so much! Thank you.
Thank you so much for your kind comment. It makes the effort creating theses videos worthwhile.
