It was a beautiful service. The choir, altos, tenors and basses were so well balanced. How I love to hear those bass notes and the clear, higher alto parts. The singing of the whole choir was super. I do so like the Causton Faux-Bourdon settings for the canticles…. Such lovely harmonies. Handl’s anthem ‘In nomine Jesu’ was very moving and ending the service with ‘Rock of Ages’ brought to a close an evensong which has most surely blessed us and set us up for the week ahead. Finally, a really nice touch by Keith Baldwin playing a portion of Handel’s ‘Music for the Royal Fireworks’ for which he deserved the enthusiastic and appreciative round of applause from the congregation. Thank you, everyone and may God bless you and keep you all. Amen. Xx

I rather think that image of the MU you suggested at the outset was dispelled years ago. The WI were also tarred with a similar brush. At one time, the only Anglican group that escaped such an unflattering image, was the 'Young Wives', which my late mother - vicar's wife and one time member of the Old Heathfield group - doggedly chaired into her late seventies until it was hinted that her age didn't exactly reflect the groups youthful ambitions!!

Composing the melody for this particular song gave VW some difficulty and I believe he actually spoke of it as that "damned lamb." Fortunately the end result as performed by Ruth and Roger suggests success and a pleasing setting. The words of another arrangement from this cycle, "I wandered thro' each charter'd street, Near where the charter'd Thames does flow......" might be more relevant during this period of Pestilence? Incidentally, I met Wilfred Brown in the early 1960s. He was an old boy of my school and was asked to sing as part of an early recording of BBCs' Songs of Praise to be broadcast from the school Chapel. A delightful man and, along with Frank Patterson, one of the truly great, English, lyric tenors.

The shortest day 2020 - what a bleak morning we have woken up to here on the South Coast. Easier to be miserable than thankful on such a dull morning. Just wanted to say a sincere "thank you" to everyone contributing to these videos. I'll try to ignore the little voice inside me sowing doubts, "You are only doing this because you've just been told to ..."
