Geez footy was so much better to watch in those days. Free flowing football without zoning and flooding and not over umpired like todays game. I'm still a massive footy fan but admit those old games and style played was better to watch.

They cheated to win the flag. They breached the salary cap. It should have been taken off them, and awarded to the next side who didn't cheat. Essendon are an embarrassment to the competition.

Also with Neale Daniher, I hope he is doing well as what I have heard he has been through some tough times over recent years. He was a great player and never got to have a long term career as a player. All the best to Neale

Was great to see Essendon going on to win the GF. Though with good luck they could have had more success in the early 80's. As they finished with 16 wins during the home and away season and still had to play in the Elimination Finals in 1981 & 1982 which has never happened to a team in any other year with the final five system, as 16 wins had always gauranteed the double chance. Then in 1983 Essendon had won 15 games but yet had to go through the Elimination Final again. Though the team that had finished top of the ladder that year North Melbourne only had 16 wins. Not fair as I shed a few tears thinking about, just kidding lol as been a long time now, but am sure I did back then. But Essendon missed that champion player Neale Daniher as he would have made a difference. He is one of the most unluckiest players to play the game considering he had constant knee problems and surguries and missed many years of football because of it.

I was there that day, and I brought may Essendon flag that day. Essendon played some great football during the finals but got the nerves in the GF againts Hawthorn which was hard to watch. But Essendon were very unlucky in the early 80's with the final 5 as it was back then. As they finished with 16 wins during the home and away season and still had to play in the Elimination Finals in 1981 & 1982 which has never happened to a team in any other year with the final five system, as 16 wins had always gauranteed a the double chance. Hughy is in rare company having played with the great John Coleman in the early 1950s and then coached by Coleman in the 1960s. He reaches back to an era where few can today with such distinction. A genuinely significant figure in our game.

Can see why they left Windy Hill to play their games at the MCG after that season. The capacity had been reduced so much by this stage, the standing room shed on the outer wing had been replaced by seating by 1991 and it was just too small.
@Igloo347111 ай бұрын
@@somebodywhoissomewhere4641 Yes agreed. It was apparently decided in the off season that the Bombers would be playing at the MCG from the following season and it didn't go down well in some quarters, although the members voted overwhelmingly to do so, still a farewell match would've been nice! Much the same as North playing their final match at Arden Street and despite rumours it could be the last match, nothing formal ever happened. Same with Fitzroy at the Junction Oval in 1984 and Hawthorn at Glenferrie in 1973.
