Does this say “hate” or “hope”? Or is it up to the viewer to decide?
Well, I definitely meant to write hope. I suppose when you do it messy like this, that's a risk.
@@thefarpavilion I love your videos. I find your voice to be very calming. I like that you explain mistakes and how you fixed them . I’ve learned a lot watching you work.
Fun video! Thank you! Can old shellac be revived by adding alcohol to it?
It might be worth a shot. But, more alcohol will dilute the shellac, so keep that in mind.
I tried the etching technique, cleaning up with mineral oil, because I didn’t have linseed oil, and that seemed to make the wax soft and sticky. Is that an issue with other oils? What are the alternatives?
Yes, other oils can leave the surface sticky as they don't react to oxygen in the same way. I would try something like coconut or canola oil, but linseed is by far the best option that I've seen.
Fascinating!
what medium are dropping onto the board pls?
It's more encaustic wax, just in different colors.
i know this might be a ridiculous question...but lets say you have a piece you created with acrylic paint on paper..or a collage that has both acrylic paint and tissue paper mounted on board. Can you seal that in encaustic without anything happening to the integrity of the piece? thank you.
So ... It COULD work... But it might not. Acrylic dries like plastic which is smooth and nonporous, so encaustic can't really fuse with it. But, if it's a thin application on paper, it might still have something to fuse to. I would recommend sealing acrylic with a sealer spray... I can't remember what it's called, but it's a better option for a full acrylic piece I would say.
Beautiful! How long did it take for your shellac layers to dry?
Usually, about 10 minutes. If it's really thick, I might give it an hour.
Do you let the shellac dry a certain amount of time before burning?
Usually 10-15 minutes works. Just make sure it's no longer sticky. You can test the thickest part with your finger.
Do you allow each layer of shellac to dry before burning?
For a dry burn, yes.
This is great!! Thank you!!
You're welcome! So glad it helped!
Hello thanks for the video! Do you need any protective wear for any of these processes?
Make sure you have plenty of ventilation. Other things are up to you and depend on your comfort level. If you feel you need something- gloves, mask, etc., definitely use it. Working with heat and flame is dangerous, so be smart and think about things before you start.
Wow, super great to the steps and the growing of this artwork .. it looks to me like a treasure map .. so for me it will be finished when somewhere is a hint of the treasue chest
Love it!
❤
I love this! Where can I see the finished version?
I'm not done yet. This past year has been crazy trying to sell our house. I'm really missing working on it!!
I'm new to encaustic, but this idea of an encaustic journal intrigues me. I think I would gelli print the pages first, then wax them. My gel plate guru is Robyn McClendon on KZread. She also has a recent book that covers her techniques.
Yep, you're absolutely right. Next time I'll be doing it that way. Thanks for the referral! I definitely need to watch more gelli printing tutorials.
Thank you for this, your painting looks awesome! I'm just beginning to get back into encaustic painting and I'm struggling with pinholes. I notice you just leave them. Do you normally let them go or do you know how to fix them without melting everything back? Thank you.
The more layers of wax you add, the fewer holes there will be. So if there's too many holes, add more wax. Fuse it well, then repeat if necessary. But I don't mind them.
Your encaustic experiment video is interesting, educational and inspiring for me. Thanks!
I'm so glad!
Ooooh super cool! 🤍❤❤❤
This is incredible! I’m very very new to encaustic anything and still trying to figure it all out. Thank you for sharing everything! 🩷
So glad you're enjoying my videos!!
What do you do with the paper once it’s coated with the wax? I mean where do you set the paper and/or the fabric while waiting for the wax to set up?
Most of the time, I'll hold them for 10 seconds or so. That's really all it takes for the wax to cool. Then I can set them anywhere.
These are great. Where did you get the big wording stamp?
Thank you! I do enjoy your youtube videos as I learn a lot from your work and experiments.
Thank you.
Muito feliz encontrar o seu canal. Por favor coloque essas medidas por escrito em gramas, estou no Brasil tenho dificuldade de entender. Muito obrigada
What is in your spray bottle?
Love this. Do you mind if I use your waxed scroll idea. Of course mine would be very different from yours and I would credit you with the technique creation. Ty.
Of course! The technique isn't copyrighted. Go for it!!
@@thefarpavilion thanks so much. I appreciate your time to introduce us to it so needed to check.
I love the first technique that I call the bloom, different than the hazy “bloom” you see as the encaustic cures! I really loving the effects you use with incising and bubbles.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing this great technique. These are really nice I really like them. Good job👏👏👏👏!
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you for sharing your adventure with all of us, your ideas are Beautiful I like the scroll pen and the stamps with ink splatters, the touch of gold is fab. 👏👏👏
The gold is my favorite. 🥰
I have a question not related to what you’re demonstrating right now. Are you familiar with XD WAX MEDIUM the one with extra damar says it’s used to create a glass like topcoat and why would you use that after you’re done using for instance, they are enough wax on your picture. Would you do it after the whole picture is totally drive for days would you do it right after would you do it instead of the other works? I’m not sure are you please tell me if you know thanks so much.
I just looked this up. So, what I saw was encaustic medium with a 50/50 ratio beeswax to damar. The damar is a hardener and also makes the wax more transparent- less cloudy, so that's why they say this is harder when cool and more glossy and clear. This is interesting because I've never used a higher ratio than 20/80 resin to wax, and heard it wasn't a good idea. Thanks for sharing! I might have to make some now ...
Hi good class. May I ask you where you purchased your washi tape? What company thanks
I believe I got this off etsy
That’s very cool. Because I didn’t know that you had to wait for shellac to drive before you could burn it on wax or is that just another way to do it?
It's another way to do it. Probably the most popular way, though...
If you’ve never done printmaking, look up how they wipe intaglio plates. It’s a very similar process and it may save you on some oil.
Thank you! I will. Saving some oil would be great!
Loved this. It was super informative.
I love the tape layering idea!
I guess I’m lost. What do you do with this once it waxed and printed?
Your comment made me smile. Not much, I guess. I am planning on making some wooden staves to wrap the scroll around, but it's just a fun art project. I'll put it on my shelf or maybe in a cloche.
Have you tried shellac flakes?
Yes, I make my own shellac now with flakes and denatured alcohol. Much better!
@@thefarpavilion Do you have a link to that video? I would love to see it?
Do you use raw linseed oil or boiled, and does it make any difference? Also, I'm curious, do you fuse after applying the linseed oil?
Thank you for this video. After the shellac burn, do you need to absorb some of the tackiness that is left over, or does that dry to a non tacky state? My concern is that the shellac burn would rub off when polishing the encaustic bloom months later.
If you let the shellac dry before you burn it, it stays dry. And it will not rub off.
@@thefarpavilion That's great news. Thank you again.
Hellowww. Could you tell me if the shellac comes in a bottle to spray it over the wax ? Where could I buy it ?? Drugstore? I love your work and tips. Thanks and regards
Yes, you can get it in an areosol can at any hardware store
Супер! А чернила на водной основе или маслянная?
Water based.
Что надо сделать чтобы воск ьак пвался на круглые трещинки?
I'm sorry, I don't really understand what You're asking...
@@thefarpavilionкак получаются эти замечательные ячейки?
@@thefarpavilionпохоже на КРАКЕЛЮР
Очень интересно! Красота! А как получаются дырочки, почему краска плсле огня "трескается"?
It's not paint, it's shellac. Shellac is like varnish. When you let it dry on the wax surface, then burn it with a blowtorch, you get these really cool cells.
Wow! The smooth pattern on your first slide is amazing!
Thanks! 😊
I appreciate your channel very much, but l don’t do surveys anymore. I got seriously burned on one at work that was supposedly anonymous and l avoid them now. However, l can say that l do enjoy the shellac burn vids the most. Don’t sweat about taking a break…family comes first! Your dedicated fans, like me, will still be here. ❤
Ouch! Sorry about that, but thank you for the feedback!!
Se puede usar la tinta sin el shellac?
Yes, but the shellac acts as a type of seal, so the ink won't run or smear.
entonces para que se usa el shellac?
I use it to get these great cells.
Hola buenas tardes, soy tintas al alcohol lo que estás usando?
I'm using alcohol inks to color my shellac. The when it's dry, I burn it with a blowtorch.
Hiya friend, do you use wood for your support?
Yes.
