This setup does not seem ideal for natural material bows since they creep (lose draw weight over time under strain). A setup where you "deadlift" the cable would allow you to move quickly and have some mechanism to release the bowstring at the desired draw length might be better.

Thanks for the awesome work ! looking forward to the continuation. I only have one question : how does having a core made of strips of bamboo and wood improve performance compared to an all bamboo bow or just have the core made out of a single piece of wood ? My understanding is that, since most of the work is done by the bamboo on back and belly, the core should be made of a less dense (lighter) material. But then why have bamboo in the core ? I can see how the wood on the sides of the core can improve torsional stability if it is more rigid than bamboo. is that the reason ?
@asiaticbowdb4 ай бұрын
The last point about the torsional rigidity is more or less the point that was given, yes. From a simple test that a member of our group did, a pure bamboo strip in a sandwich of bamboo vs one with wood sides was less torsionally rigid, so it seems not entirely unreasonable. With regards to performance: It's not really a big consideration. The bow's so long with so much mass anyway that it's going to be slow no matter what you really do.

@JohnSmith-yb1ft a spear would probably be better in a way though since you would be able to attack from a longer distance. Paired with a shield, you'd be much safer still
@beelzebub72217 ай бұрын
@JohnSmith-yb1ft i won't argue that the sword is a valuable melee weapon, but I believe you may be underestimating the use of a spear. Spears have been used in many historic battles in the past, and are even considered a much more valuable and effective weapon in combat than a sword. Due to it's longer reach, high piercing power, and safer all around style, they have been used way more commonly than a sword ever has. Spears even saw occasional use all the way into WW1 (if you consider the definition of a "spear" a "sharp blade attached to a long stick) through the bayonet. There is very well the misconception that swords were the biggest primary combat weapon in history, and a whole culture related to swords personified in movies and such, but all in all, spears were used more often than swords. even spartans used spears (hoplites) and, while they may have carried a shortsword on their hips as a secondary, rarely was the sword used as a primary weapon. TL;DR, Spears were more commonly utilized throughout history due to the combination of range keeping the wielder safe by being able to attack at a distance (same concept as a gun, "surprisingly".), high attack power, incredible piercing strength, and much more resource-efficient creation requirements. Swords were more often used as a sidearm piece, if at all due to much shorter range, weaknesses to enemies wearing armor, and heavy metal costs (which were rare at best in much of history due to "primitive" mining practices) Edit: if anyone else would like to jump in here, maybe give me some info about inaccuracies of this comment i'd love to hear them as well.
