Retrospect

Retrospect

Hey there. I'm Steve Heimler. Retrospect is a channel that puts current events in historical context so that we can think clearly and engage humbly with the world around us. If you're weary of a world in which partisanship and simplicity are passed off for critical thinking, then I'd love to have you along as I try to re-enchant current and historical events in all their complexity.

How the mainstream, is being used to divide people? It may look like its america against russia, but its not. First of all, there are only a few people, who are in power in each countrie, lets call them, the organization, that consist of a few individuals, who also have power over some other, and then they some other. same thing, with police and gangs. it may look like they compete with eachother, but thats no the case. they work from both sides, and tips eachother. when there is war, its just on a bigger scale. If you see police raid, then its just a false flag operation, only to show the public, that they actually do something. The gangs are like a second military, that they use for controll on the streets. it better to let them controll the street, than the people, cause that keeps them in controll. So when they say, Ukraine is at war with Russia, its just them using the country name as cover, for their criminal organisation. (Subjective opinion) no point in chosing sides, cause they are in both.

This is a Johnny-Harris-level explanation, very well done! I was a former AP World Student back when you were still uploading new content for the course (during COVID era) and was going down my subscribers list on KZread and found you again. You saved my grade and helped me pass the test which I am forever grateful for. I just got nostalgic cause I'm graduating this year and it's been a while since I've watched your videos which made history, my least favorite school subject, very enjoyable through your "buffoonery." And now I accidentally came across your other channel so I can continue watching even tho I'm almost done with HS. Thank you for all you do Mr. Heimler, we appreciate you so much.

Jeez, you did an incredible job on exposing how the people who used “Jesus” as a means for their storming of the White House were actually contradicting the Gospel. Thank you so much for that!

As a Chinese myself who's seen many people's responses to these attacks, I feel that there are many americans, especially right wing conservatives, would argue that there isn't much evidence of hate within these crimes. Like the guy who killed the people at the spa, they would say there really isn't proof that it was a anti-asian hate crime and that it was just a coincidence that more asian people were killed since maybe there were more asians inside at the time. And they might have a point. Sometimes they say that not because they are racist, but because they put logic and facts over feelings and thoughts. I guess it's important that we're not quick to judge about a recent news report that could have something to do with a hate crime, but at the same time, it's important to consider the fact that it might be a hate crime. All people deserve to be treated equally, and all people should have the chance to repent their wrongdoings and change for the greater good of society.

I think it was a great idea to create this channel where you can speak more candidly than in your official channel which has the restrains of being a respected academic and purely informative channel. I really enjoy hearing your lecture on these topics. You even here give a very clear and digestible while detailed look at contentious issues. Thanks Himmler

I had never once heard of the story of Vincent Ching until now. That one hit too close to home. I’m a white kid who lives in Michigan near-ish Detroit and my grandfather worked as an assembly line worker at Chrysler, as most people do around here. He was laid off in the late 70s and 80s from the downturn of American auto manufacturing in part due to competition from Japanese manufacturers. He blamed the Japanese for this and was very resentful. On top of this he heard stories of how “brutal” and “ferocious” the Japanese were from his father who caught in the pacific theatre in world war 2. He passed this hate and resentment onto my mother who still to this day tells me I’m never allowed to buy a “Jap Car” (I didn’t even know “Jap” was considered an offensive racial slur until a few years ago. Heading that story felt like a stake in the heart knowing that I had been nurtured into hate. I’m glad this so finally reaching mainstream thought, it’s taught me a lot.

So are people from Bhutan, The Maldives, East Timor, or Laos also being hated? Did anyone ask these people if they want to be dragged into some victim group? Do the people from Nepal or Brunei interested in recognizing hate that will define them as Asians?

I have four major problems with the concept of "hate crimes" as presented in this video. It is my belief that we should criminalize violent behavior, not states of mind. 1. As correctly noted at 10:15, this forces the prosecutors and investigators to psychoanalyse the perpetrator. And what if the perpetrator chooses to exercise his right to remain silent? That makes it kind of hard to perform that psychoanalysis. 2. If my dearly beloved wife or one of my precious children were murdered into order to rob them, I would have a big, big problem with the concept that the perpetrator should receive a lighter sentence because the motive was "only" robbery and not hate. 3. Suppose that I am on a jury. How can I possibly know the accused's state of mind beyond reasonable doubt? 4. There are religions which do not believe that all people are born equal. For example, Hinduism with its caste system. And other religions which say things along the lines of "We are God's chosen people and everyone else is not." The "hate crime" concept looks to me like criminalizing specific religions. For example, suppose a high-caste member of the Hindu religion murders a member of the "untouchable" caste. Does the fact that the perpetrator believes his victim is inferior from birth automatically make it a religious hate crime? Conclusion: Murder is murder. I believe in punishing criminal behavior, not states of mind.

I appreciate that you are opening a dialogue. I do not understand why the man acted the way he did. I hope that he takes ownership of his actions. My desire is that this hatred divide which is trying to take hold in our country be addressed then eliminated. Those killed did not have anything to do with His self-centered actions. They are all on him. He treated those Americans as if they were less than human. For an evangelical, he was probably taught that all human life matters. Punishment accordingly is required. I would like to view a video about the evangelical side of the story. Great Job as Always Steve, and please thank you friend for his insight, thoughts and sharing his experiences.

The notion that honest conversation needs to be had is certainly the next major step. One major obstacle that we have to overcome is understanding that, as an American, we value every individual thought and that these thoughts are shared by more than just a select few. Nor are thoughts restricted or reserved for a selective group. I am subscribed to another youtuber, Lauren Chen who, as a Chinese Canadian, recently posted a video proclaiming her opinions on recent anti-Asia sentiment. Simply because she reflects conservative values or because she is not American, she is being blasted by people who believe her opinions hold no merit. As Americans, we are all equally responsible for making changes within our culture and as such, need to value the imput of groups who are percieved to hold power as much as those being affected by it. We can't be afraid to have the conversation simply because we aren't associated directly by the problem.
