So the screw is heat-treated after this step?

No need. The cold rolling already work hardens the material

Super fascinating. Ive used opposing die threaders before. Ive tried opposing die burnishing. Ive never seen opposing die ball screw forming. Dies are tapered. Damn, need one hell of a grinder to make the dies.

Traditional ball screw: Turn, HT, Grind. HRC 62. Burrs. Heat affected areas. Poor grain structures in places of cutting. This process: HT Turn Form: HRC <<<62HRC. I only ever thread formed 38 HRC 5140. BUT, great formed induced strength and grain structure.... Really depends on material you want your ballscrew made of i guess

Take a 200 dollar piece of metal run it through a machine for 2 minutes. Then turn around and charge 2500 dollars for the same metal.

Part of it is measuring and double checking that the bar is straight. They have special ball screw bending machines. You can also get precision ground ball screws that require a special cylindrical grinder. Other then that your right. I personally plan to purchase one of these machines to make ball screws for my equipment that doesn't require crazy accuracy. you can buy them here www.indiamart.com/threadformmachineindustries/. You will need to purchase special dies for them which may cost as much of the machine. If anyone really does purchase one of these machine let me know. I would love to learn more.

not to mention the cost of the initial cost of the machine design, machining of the formers, the maintenance of them, the c0 precision of the screws etc etc. Everything sounds absurd when you're ignorant.

Gotta cover the cost of accuracy, engineering and the machine.
